I opened a report to update a show with data from TMDB. How can I see when—or if—it gets done?
What is the TMDB link? For import TMDB must be there along with imdb and/or tvdb external IDs. For foreign titles the English translation for title and summary must also be there. If all is correct it will import in 24hrs.
Edit: I see two entries on TMDB. They both have multiple seasons so it’s not clear. They also don’t have English pages which I could try to help with but I need to know which is the actual one since the external ID can only be attached to one.
In other words, to import content, there must not only be duplicate pages on two different sites (and which of the two pages would the data be taken from, anyway?), but also a summary and title in English, which is impossible for 90% of products that aren’t in English (unless you translate them randomly and invent an English title)?
Trakt uses TMDB. The IMDB or TVDB external IDs are to ensure no duplicates. Trakt is a U.S. company using the English language. When pulling from TMDB English is used.
TMDB also has its own requirements that need to be adhered to.
As for translations, that’s not true at all. I’ve helped people create pages in multiple languages that I don’t speak. Use google translate and copy paste. I understand there may be nuances where a phrase means something different but that would be something for you to address if you can.
Not trying to be difficult but you’re probably coming from TVtime which was different and that’s how things work here.
Yes, sure, Letterboxd is also an American company that uses English, but it imports content in all languages; otherwise, a large portion of the content would be excluded (and yes, I know, you can invent an English title by translating it literally, but I don’t know if TheMovieDB accepts unofficial English titles). And it’s fine to use only TheMovieDB instead of TheTVDB—I guess because TheTVDB is owned by TVTime—but then requiring an external link anyway means having to comply with the guidelines of Trakt, TMDB, and even TVDB, all of which severely limit Trakt’s database (though of course, I imagine the 80-20 rule applies to this type of database as well). I understand why it didn’t import even a twentieth of the episodes.
It would take me days, if not weeks, to copy the information from TVDB to TMDB. And then I’d have to import the TVTime file again (because of the watch dates), hoping no conflicts arise. All of this without even a list of unimported TV series. I hope to find a better alternative to this; otherwise, oh well.
I get it. I was not happy about the external ID requirement since TMDB has weird rules and will not allow duplicate IDs which means some shows will not be here. TMDB also doesn’t allow sports so anything like that or youtube only series won’t be here.
Unfortunately there’s no good option other than doing it yourself. You can create a ticked on TMDB but they may not address it or if they do take forever. I’ve even received attitude from their mods about it. Figured they could import from a file which would make the process easier than manually but never got a response if they could (would have done that and provided it).
However, the series already exists on trakt, and needs to be updated on the basis of TMDB and non-TVDB data. External IDs are compiled on both TMDB and TVDB. The only problem is that here on Trakt, at the moment, the episodes are wrong and don’t even match those of TVDB, which is the db that Trakt currently refers to for that show. How will the trakt thing be handled? I would also like to know if there is a way to understand the status of my report as it was on the V2.
I edited my response above with more information. These may have been initially using TVDB and are how they are after change to TMDB (can’t really speak to the backend).

Sure. Typically just needs something instead of blank. I added the title so it should be good now.
This is the correct link with the connected IDs and the right episodes. I asked to delete the other one to those of TMDB but they are not quick in their answers.
I’ve added the translations—do they look okay? How is Trakt handling the migration to TMDB that I requested? Right now, the episodes are incorrect, and it’s relying on TVDB (where they don’t match anyway).
Looks good. I did change the title to “wild bunch” so it should show up like that here in 24hrs.
And so, would I then find the episodes exactly as they are on TMDB? Would the ones that differ—those that exist here on Trakt but not on TMDB because they were incorrect—be removed?
Yes, hopefully. If not, the extras could be removed. The admins here are good with replying once things are synced so you could check at that point and report if you see issues. Just keep in mind if TMDB is wrong Trakt will be too.
TMDB is correct; TVDB is incorrect. There is some confusion regarding this series because, at a certain point, following a dispute between the creators, it abandoned the format that originally made it famous—the talk show—and transformed into a standard YouTube channel featuring random videos and formats. New episodes are still being listed on TVDB, but the original format ended in 2024; currently, a YouTube channel is being updated, and that listing is incorrect. Anyway, thanks for the help; let’s see what happens.
