Can't update lists

I’m not sure whether this applies to you, but in my case, my account was set to private while my list was public. When my app tried to access the list, Trakt returned a 403 (Forbidden) error. I had to make my account public before Trakt would return the list items.

So, is there an official update from the admins on this, or do we just keep guessing?

No explanation of the limits in the recent update.

@The-Gamer wow still nothing ? I haven’t checked in over a week and just ended up duplicating my lists even though it’s annoying it’s working. But I’m more annoyed that this still hasn’t fully been addressed.

I think they’re having some sort of problem recognising whether you’re a free or VIP user, because I’m having a similar issue: I can’t add any more items (films) to a private list that already has 1055 items, and Trakt tells me something about needing a VIP account, but I am a VIP user…

VIP limit now seems to be 100 lists, max 1,000 items each (per Rippple)

I’m not sure whether the 1000 items limit has anything to do with Ripple. Most of the time, I manage my Trakt via the web version. I have a VIP subscription to Trakt and, alongside that, a Lifetime subscription to Ripple (well, not anymore, the developer removed it when he started working for Trakt).

Rippple just added a page showing Trakt Account Limits. Why I see this there and not on Trakt is a bit baffling!

OK, that makes sense. Let me explain: I have/had a Lifetime subscription on Rippple, but when the developer started working for Trakt, he released Rippple II and removed the Lifetime users. To be honest, I didn’t like this decision at all, so I’m still using version I even though I could use version II because I have a VIP subscription on Trakt. Obviously, version I is no longer receiving updates and that feature doesn’t exist, which is why I didn’t understand your explanation. Thanks for clarifying that.

I don’t think that’s right. I’m in the same boat but on Rippple II with no problems.

@kcador can you please clarify?

Hey,

I’m not sure what to clarify so I’ll try to clarify the things I’m seeing in the last couple of messages here:

VIP limit now seems to be 100 lists, max 1,000 items each

Yes, those are new limits, I shared more info here 🚀 Trakt Product Update – Summer 2026 Edition - #10 by kcador

I’m not sure whether the 1000 items limit has anything to do with Ripple.

It is not specific to Rippple, it is a Trakt limit.

Lifetime subscription to Ripple (well, not anymore, the developer removed it when he started working for Trakt).

Not really how it happened

  • I started working for Trakt,
  • maybe 2 month after (I’m not sure of the exact timing here), I removed that Rippple Lifetime in-app purchase because 1. Rippple users started seeing more Trakt VIP paywalls and felt like the Lifetime value/promise wasn’t up to what it was 2. it started to feel wrong to sell a Lifetime plan when it started to feel like I couldn’t deliver a Lifetime experience back.
  • more or less a year later, we (as a team) decided to make Rippple part of Trakt. Unfortunately, because of technical issues with the App Store app transfer, we had to create a new app making it impossible to migrate users and their settings, reviews, and in-app purchases.

Rippple just added a page showing Trakt Account Limits. Why I see this there and not on Trakt is a bit baffling!

That’s currently in the beta/TestFlight version only :man_scientist:
I want to make this clearer in the Trakt UI as well, we’re just working on other things, we’ll make it clearer at some point.

To be honest, I didn’t like this decision at all, so I’m still using version I even though I could use version II because I have a VIP subscription on Trakt.

Rippple I still works but doesn’t get the updates Rippple II is receiving, and the Lifetime in-app is still grandfathered on Rippple I. Since you are a VIP, you could/should try Rippple II. I understand you didn’t like how it happened but I think you are really missing out. I know I’m biased :upside_down_face:

Hope this clarifies what needed to be clarified

I’m going to be blunt here: this is getting ridiculous.

I haven’t said much about all the changes and restrictions Trakt has introduced over the last couple of month. I’ve mostly kept quiet, adapted and carried on using the service. But when you look at everything together, it is becoming very difficult not to ask what the hell is going on.

We’ve had restriction after restriction, changes to VIP functionality, tighter limits, and now the 1,000-item limit on lists.

And then there’s the whole V3 website and app experience, which, quite frankly, has been a massive step backwards in a number of respects. The V3 rollout has brought its own frustrations, missing or changed functionality, and an interface that many long-time users simply don’t enjoy using.

I understand that Trakt needs to develop the product, modernise the infrastructure and manage server resources. Fine. Nobody is expecting you to stand still.

But there is a big difference between improving a product and continually taking things away or putting tighter restrictions on how paying users can use it.

And this 1,000-item limit is a perfect example.

It is ridiculously easy to go over 1,000 items when you’re actually using Trakt to build and maintain proper personal collections. A carefully curated list can quite legitimately contain 2,000, 3,000, 5,000 or more items. That doesn’t mean the list is some useless database dump.

And the Smart List argument doesn’t really wash with me.

A Smart List and a personal list are not the same bloody thing.

A Smart List says: “Give me everything that matches these criteria.”

A personal list says: “These are the exact titles I’ve personally selected.”

If I’ve spent years building a list containing thousands of specific titles, telling me to make a Smart List instead completely misses the point. There may be absolutely no set of rules that can reproduce the list because the list represents my choices, not a search query.

That’s what I think Trakt is getting wrong here. You’re deciding how users should be using their lists instead of recognising how people actually use them.

The 100-list limit? Okay, I can live with that. Most people aren’t going to need 100 lists.

But 1,000 items per list? Come on.

And when you put this together with the other restrictions and changes introduced over the last two years, it starts looking less like individual sensible product decisions and more like a continual erosion of what users can actually do with the service.

I’m a VIP subscriber. I pay for Trakt because I use it heavily and I value the service. I don’t expect unlimited resources. But I do expect VIP to give me more flexibility and value, not for functionality that was previously available to be progressively restricted.

Users aren’t stupid. We know what we want our own lists for.

I also haven’t complained about every change Trakt has made. I’ve given the benefit of the doubt and carried on using the service. But honestly, enough is enough.

At some point you have to ask whether all these restrictions, changes and compromises are actually improving the VIP experience, or whether you’re simply putting more and more limitations on people who are already paying for the service.

I really like Trakt. That’s why I’m still here, why I’m still paying for VIP, and why I’m bothering to say this.

But looking at the last couple of years as a whole - the restrictions, the changes to functionality, the V3 website and app, and now the 1,000-item list limit - it’s getting bloody ridiculous.

Please reconsider the 1,000-item limit for VIP users. At the very least, give serious/power users a substantially higher limit.

Because 1,000 items is nowhere near enough for a genuinely heavy Trakt user.
