↩️ Free Users Redirect to V3

Starting today, free users trying to access the old V2 experience will automatically be directed to V3.

Why This Change?

Simply put: the new experience now supports the core workflows most free users rely on.

This isn’t just something we believe internally. It’s something we see clearly in usage data and behaviors.

V3 has already been the default experience on our Android and iOS apps, where running two versions at the same time wasn’t possible. Most users have already transitioned there, and the vast majority continue using it successfully. Some users chose other apps or workflows, and that’s okay.

Overall, most users adapt quickly and continue using Trakt on V3.

What About VIP Users?

VIP users will continue to have access to V2 for now.

Many VIP-exclusive features still need to be ported and polished in V3, and we want to ensure the experience meets the same standard before migrating VIP users.

Work on these features is ongoing, and VIP users will be moved to V3 once those pieces are ready.

What’s Next?

Large transitions like this take time. Moving many users to a new platform can’t happen overnight, and it can’t happen perfectly for every scenario on day one.

What we can promise is this:

  • We’re watching usage closely
  • We’re continuing to improve V3 for both free and VIP users
  • And we’re moving forward step by step

And there it is: Confirmation that the lovely, feature-packed V2 interface will be trashed before long.

I’ll prepare to start my mourning period.

It seems fitting that you can’t even get that right.

On a machine where I don’t use this site regularly, I can login, but there’s no way for me (as a VIP user) to go to the V2 interface without being redirect to V3. Also, SSO for forum login on that machine is broken.

On a machine where I do use the site regularly, I don’t have those problems, presumably since certain cookies are still intact.

“Using it successfully” is very different from “happy with the experience.” I don’t understand why people are being forced to use V3 when V2 is still up and running for VIP. It feels like a money making tactic, which unfortunately I gave into because V3 is missing so many features that I use daily.

This smells of desperation to retain or bring back VIP subscribers.

The real popcorn show will be when you guys force all the VIP subs to V3 as well.

All other criticism aside, this is especially amusing to me. I was a software dev at Warner Bros. during the merger with Discovery, and literally the entire system was replaced with a ground-up rebuild to integrate the two services. Code, servers, infrastructure, deployment process, tools, everything, brand new. After proper development and testing, we had the whole thing cut over in a couple days with only one or two very minor issues. Most people never saw even a blip in their streaming activities or account sessions.

Now granted, WBD is orders of magnitude bigger than Trakt with far more resources, but that also means Trakt has orders of magnitude fewer issues to deal with and customers to transition. More importantly, this just points to a bad release strategy. Most of the problems and missing features were known before the forced cut to V3. I could understand some bugs or whatever, but knowingly moving forward before the product was ready can’t really be dismissed with an excuse like “these things take time”. I mean, yes, development takes time, but that’s why you do it behind the scenes BEFORE releasing it.

V3 is just as bad if not worst than most of the tracking websites out there.

V2 is about the only decent option available… And you’re really getting ready to phrase it out… Shame on you

Is this why private links for lists aren’t working? Just shared a new one and was informed it doesn’t work, so I tried it in incognito and discovered that they get 404 errors on all my list private links.

if your lists are set to private they should only be viewable by you. You would need to select “link” in the list for it to work for them

Right, bad phrasing on my part. They are set to link mode. None of the links are working for anybody that isn’t me.

DM me a link to one of your lists and i can let you know if it loads for me

Guess I’m being extra clueless at the moment. Can’t figure out how to DM you. There a trick to that?

click my name then click message

Don’t see the message button that’s in your screenshot. At least I wasn’t missing seeing something obvious.

Is V2 seriously being phased out at some point? Because I was paying and then I couldn’t justify the amount any longer… even more so with the fact that I only care about a calendar. Literally none of the other features matter to me.

Maybe consider a ‘respectable’ subscription for people only to have a V2 calendar.

But now with no V2 available to free users… I was forced to pay for a single month, just so I can copy a list of all my tracked shows, so I can look elsewhere for someplace with a calendar and a lower cost that makes sense and doesn’t feel like a waste for someone like myself who only uses the calendar.

Also… maybe it’s because I’m on an Nvdia Shield streaming box, but V3 looks horrible. Like everything is just overlapping each other and a complete mess. Not to mention the fact that it looks like how a site would look 15 - 20 yrs ago and just starting out by someone how knows nothing about how to make a user friendly website.

V2 is about as perfect as pefect could be. Easy to move around, easy to understand, more feature rich and worth a premium to pay for (still not worth $50 a yr… $30 a yr max and a calendar only mode for $15 would be respectable).

Peace out and thanks for giving me many years of enjoyment. Sad I have to go and I’m betting between the forced to pay mode put in place a year ago, then the jacked up pricing and now this ugly V3 mess + less features etc… Trakt ain’t gonna survive long with this disaster. Real shame.

V3 is so ugly. I really love V2. Once V2 is removed for VIP users, I am probably going to find an alternative service. This is so sad because I am an OG member of 14 years.

I am a VIP user with almost 2 full years left on my sub and at sometime in the last 2 hours it’s decided I can no longer see the V2 page and continually directs me with a “ref=trakt-og-autoredirect-non-vip” URL

what the hell is going on over there I’m very close to credit card chargeback territory after the last few weeks

Also why can’t I filter “hide in library” etc like on V2? this shit SUCKS

edit: WHY CAN’T I ACCESS MY PLEX SYNC SETTINGS IN V3 WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GUYS DOING

You should be able to get to it here: Trakt Web: Settings

Profile (bottom left), cogwheel under your avatar, advanced (top left sidebar), Plex Sync (top menu bar)

But it does now seem to be missing the options for Sync. Unless it defaults to turning it on for Plex Sync if you disable the option under the webhook for an item,
