I’m the developer of Moviebase, an Android app that integrates with Trakt to enhance your movie and TV tracking experience. I’ve worked hard to create the best experience between Trakt and Moviebase.
As someone who values the Trakt platform, I’d love to hear directly from you all:
What features do you find essential in a Trakt-connected app?
Are there specific functionalities you wish existed?
What pain points have you experienced with other tracking apps?
I’m actively developing new features and want to prioritize what matters most to actual Trakt users. Feel free to check out Google Play Store to see what’s currently available, or share your thoughts directly here!
Hey,
I used to be a loyal Moviebase user and even paid for the full version – not a subscription, but a one-time purchase. What really drove me away was how that paid version was treated later on.
After paying for the full version, I suddenly found essential features like series filters (e.g., ended shows, ongoing shows – basic stuff!) locked behind yet another paywall in the form of a new subscription model. That’s not just disappointing – it feels like a bait-and-switch.
We were in contact via email several times – I personally requested those filter features and made suggestions for improving the app. And yes, I expected them to be included in the full version I had already paid for – not locked behind a second paywall just to push users into a subscription trap.
Fortunately, around the time you switched to the subscription model, Trakt released their own official app. That made the decision to switch really easy for me. I won’t support this kind of cash-grab approach.
You lost a loyal customer – and many others in my circle, too. We used to be big fans of Moviebase. Now I actively advise people to stay away. The way you treated full version buyers completely destroyed my trust. I’m out for good.
Hey, looks like a great app! One thing that I immediately noticed that it asked me to rate the app before I even had the chance to try it out, very strange, but maybe also a bug.
The app overall looks very good, love the design and Material (You?) design, it’s super consistent! The cast section is really nice, and maybe this is a bit tricky, but the thing I miss most compared to the website (in app apps, currently I am using SeriesGuide) is the option to filter by watched aka check which content you have seen from an actor or actress.
What confused me was the Play privacy box, as it states the app does not collect or share any data (1st and 3rd party), but according to exodus it accesses (or can access) the advertising ID and contains two advertising trackers, which are unlikely to not process data (by default).
Such access to end devices for the purposes of (web) analysis, market market research and for any form of advertising without informed consent are not permitted under Section 25 (1) TDDDG. § Section 25 TDDDG regulates the protection of the privacy of end devices and implements Art. 5 Para. 3 of the ePrivacy Directive.
Taken from this site, could you maybe elaborate on how the app handles privacy with Facebook Ads, Google AdMob and IDs? (Yes this is very German haha.)
Thank you!
Edit: omg the checkin feature is great!
Edit2: A small detail, but the app does not detect trakt comments from one self aka you can block yourself haha.
Thanks for the answer! I meant that if you go to the comments of something and there is a comment from yourself (e.g. written from the website) it displays it as a normal comment. Some other apps then add options to delete or edit of they see a comment from the logged in user (I hope this makes sense).
Hello Moviebase Team, I really appreciate your response. Could you please confirm if my original Moviebase Prime purchase from 2018 for €3.99 now unlocks all features without any restrictions, as promised back then? If features are still hidden behind a paywall, the promise from back then is broken, and your feedback on my complaint is worthless to me.
Thanks a lot for acknowledging your mistake and for giving me access to all features again – I think that’s awesome! It’s great to see you’re focusing more on customer satisfaction again. This is how you treat customers who made a one-time purchase, even if it wasn’t much money back then. I was actually so thrilled with the software back then that I even voluntarily donated via the Play Store. I understand the software would be worth a lot more today, but once lifetime, always lifetime. Breaking a promise isn’t cool.
I’ve reinstalled the app and, after almost three years of not using it, I’m trying to get back into it. However, I’m getting a Gateway Error with the message 400 Bad Gateway. How can I connect to Trakt?
Hi Chris, thanks for your hard work on the app! I really like it. One thing I’ve noticed when using the watchlist is that the filters aren’t saved. It would be really handy if you could filter by things like released movies or completed series, and have those filters stay in place even after closing the app.
