Rejection of a duplicate report for an item

I have had a number of reports for Looney Tunes cartoons rejected recently. One example follows:

REJECTED TVDB

This episode exists at TVDB, the datasource, so I can’t merge it with the movie listing.”

Firstly, I thought TVDB was deprecated as a source for Trakt. Next, this item only exists as a movie on TMDB. I have had a discussion about this on the TMDB forums, as I had originally set them up (I have around 240) as a TV show as per TVDB on Plex via tinymediamanager some years ago.

This was probably wrong in the first place, because I don’t believe that every one produced (there were over 1,000 under the Looney Tunes / Merrie Melodies banners) has appeared in DVD or blu-ray releases.

TMDB won’t allow them in that way, because these shorts were released in cinemas originally and so each one is classed as a movie. I’ve begun the long process of migrating, removing them from the Trakt & Plex collections and reclassifying. Reporting duplicates was part of this process, I thought.

Hence I was surprised by the rejections as, surely, if Trakt are now relying (mostly) on TMDB, “Looney Tunes” as a TV series should be deleted, even if only one at a time, especially given the verdict of TMDB. I have checked around 50 of these cartoons so far on Trakt and they all exist here as movies, as well as the series imported from TVDB.

Note as part of the discussion on TMDB, I found that as the Pink Panther cartoon shorts & Tom and Jerry were also originally released in cinemas, they should be treated as movies, not as TV series…

Hi,
that page you reported those specials has TVDB as it’s datasource. You can see that here:

I couldn’t merge them because if I did that, the episodes would just show up again after the page refreshed.

On these kind of pages, we have 2 options, we either migrate them to TMDB, or keep them on TVDB, if they aren’t allowed there. Since this is a cartoon that TMDB doesn’t allow to be listed like that, we kept the TVDB page due to the number of plays. We also kept some youtube exclusive shows from TVDB that aren’t allowed on TMDB, for example.

We decided to not use TVDB as a datasource a long time ago, but our pages needed to be migrated to TMDB. On cases TMDB doesn’t allow them, we might have decided to keep the TVDB page, even if in the future, we won’t be able to update them (which is not the case right now, they are still updated normally).

I could, of course, merge each episode of the cartoon entries with the movie listings from TMDB and remove the TV pages. However, people keep creating those pages as shows on TMDB, and the moderators keep removing (correctly, as it is against their rules there). We here, however, can keep pages from both datasources and that page is allowed on TVDB. Users seem to want to mark this as a show, so we decided to keep both listings. The duplicate in this case is allowed here and people can decide how they want to mark it.

Thank you for the prompt response & explanation; appreciated.

In view of that (& the difficulty I’ve had in getting anything changed on TVDB (a separate support ticket for each item, really(?) which seems like an exercise in futility) I think I am just going to use TMDB as the primary source for assigning items in Plex and hence Trakt for consistency across my libraries from now on. I will also sort out the other stuff that largely derived from TVDB (principally Pink Panther & Tom and Jerry cartoons, a total of around 200) once I have migrated the Looney Tunes collection.
