Hi,
I create and maintain the project retraktarr, it’s probably not the most popular trakt implementation tool you guys have heard of, but it does have some dedicated users, or I suppose it had…the typical user of retraktarr used it with a free package which allowed for 1000 entries previously, and as you know the limit is now changed to 100. For instance, my two lists are still present I their form before the change radarr, a list by zakary - Trakt https://trakt.tv/users/zakary7/lists/sonarr?sort=rank,asc ranging from 250-350 entries. Many users had far more, but I maintained these lists of active shows and movies that were coming out or airing that I found interesting enough to share, I received random follows periodically, but mainly shared these with friends to let them add to their Sonarr and Radarr to get short lists of worthwhile stuff.
With the change to 100 as a limit by default, I can no longer even use the application. I could make a bunch of tiny genre limited lists or something, or just change it so it had 3-4 lists of 100, and “circumvent” this limitation, but that seems like a breach of the ToS or at least it’s ethical meaning - so I haven’t.
I’m curious, first off, if developers like myself maintaining a project for trakt that has actual users and function have any chance of receiving a gratis VIP, so I can at least continue to use my own application without being burdened by a subscription fee, given that there ARE users of my project I am aware of who registered and pay because of it. I’m also curious If there are any plans to provide some intermediate pricing. To be honest, the rates you guys are asking for trakt VIP is sort of crazy for many. I could make the arguments, but I’m sure at this point they have already been made ad nauseum. I’m not here to preach or debate you’re business model, I get it.
What I will say is that not everyone needs the whole VIP package and the kitchen sink to boot, some of us just want like, 5 lists - maybe with some limit of like 5 or 10k, and nothing more. I don’t want to scobble, have some “year in review feature”, track all this non-sense about rewatch progress and have widgets blabla…I use this for a simple list feature, and you’ve now bundled everything together and reduced my list size to 100 to incentivize me to go to VIP; which you forced a bunch of additional features I never used or considered using, much less need since I have the few functions of merit already elsewhere (tautulli, plex itself, the Sonar/Radarr stack, mdblist)…
I have switched to using mdlist now natively, where before it too sync’d to trakt prior to using Radarr to sort through it, and resync my “shortlist” with retraktarr to send to friends.
I’m saddened that my project has effectively been killed due to this “bundle” value VIP package you have offered as the only option, when those of us using lists and lists alone as a simple store of our movies and TV shows we like do not find it worth 60$ a year to keep a simple table with a 3 or 4 column under our ID a value proposition.
Keeping in mind I’m a rather serious developer of multiple projects with millions of downloads myself, although retraktarr is a rather small personal passion project I started several years ago, please take a moment and perhaps consider adding some sort of “Expanded List” package that just gives those of us with the desire to simply maintain lists via the API or searching the web page a chance to continue to use Trakt…there are other options for lists, and I’ve been asked to reintegrate retraktarr into things like letterbox - ruining the pun of the name, but restoring some of its functionality…I do not want to have to do this, as the project is more or less complete and bug free and in final form as it is today.
Think about it, you are the ultimate decider and I am just a peon in this, but I am pleading…a few bucks per year, 10 lists, 10k limit. No frills, doohickies, or confetti. I bet you’ll have some takers, and maintaining a few simple lists in postgres or whatever you use in the backend is trivial for you if you’ve designed the database of users and their lists with any semblance of forethought - and I have confidence you are very capable. Most of these lists wont even receive any meaningful traffic, but will provide the potential for projects like mine to live on in some form, even if the user-base is a bit more limited due to those who won’t buy the lists only package - and the use-cases I list in my readme will all become possible again. Take a read of my use-cases, they are all pretty cool I think.
Anyway, Just a developer here…with this having been on my mind since the announcement and limit change. I finally just had a conversation with another user who asked me what to do, and would I convert the API to letterbox, and I thought “OK, I’m going to go ask them to save my little project”
Thank you for your time,
zak
Developer of/on cross-seed, Deluge, various Deluge plugins, retraktarr ( GitHub - zakkarry/retraktarr: retraktarr is a "reverse" Trakt.tv list implementation for Radarr/Sonarr that creates Trakt lists for your movies/series ) and so many scripts I can’t be bothered to list them.
