100 TV-Shows You Must See Before You Die

:waving_hand: Hi everyone!

If you have a Reddit account, could you share this list there? I’ve been unfairly blocked in my every new account, so I can’t post it myself. I’d really appreciate it if more people could see this ranking!

:light_bulb: A while ago I came across some post on reddit where someone ranked the top-50 TV shows using aggregated ratings from multiple sources — and I got really inspired. Hats off to the original for the inspiration and idea.

After hundreds of hours of data transfer, I expanded the idea into a list of 100 must-see TV shows, based on data from 20+ rating platforms like IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, Letterboxd, TMDB, Kinopoisk, Douban, and more (full list below).

:globe_showing_americas: The goal was to create a ranking that’s as close to objective as possible by combining scores from diverse international platforms — to equally represent critics, casual viewers, and different cultural perspectives across many countries.

To ensure quality and avoid outliers, I only included shows with at least 25,000 IMDb ratings. I tried to make a list of series with a broader audience in mind, which is probably why older shows didn’t make the final top. They tend to get less attention and fewer ratings from modern viewers, though some definitely deserve an “Honorable Mention.”

(You’ll find the shows that almost made the cut listed at the bottom of the table.)

I’ve thought about this a lot and eventually came to this conclusion: if I didn’t filter by popularity at all, the list might end up with a bunch of random series that got, say, 85 points from 100 people. Instead, I gave preference to shows that scored around 83 points but from 300+ people - a stronger consensus. But still series that scored 75 points from 10,000 people wouldn’t necessarily make the list just because of the volume

:balance_scale: To add some balance, I also included a popularity score as one of the metrics — but kept its weight relatively low (just 1 out of 25 metrics). This metric was only applied within the top-100 to give more popular series a slight edge in their final positioning, while still ensuring rating quality remained the primary factor. Even shows with below-average popularity scores (as low as 65 points) could still make the cut if their ratings were outstanding enough.

For any missing ratings — which happened when a show had no data on a specific site — I used the average rating of the top-140 shows on that platform. This ensured that underrated or lesser-known series weren’t unfairly penalized due to lack of data.

If you’re wondering why your favorite show didn’t make the list — 99% chance it’s because it scored lower across aggregated ratings or didn’t have enough ratings compared to top-100 shows. There’s a 1% chance I genuinely missed it somehow, but given how deep I went into this, that’s pretty unlikely.

Hope you’ll find this list interesting or maybe even discover a few new shows to watch. Would love to hear your thoughts!

I appreciate the amount of work you’ve put into this. but I think you just made a list of 100 TV titles that are popular with millennials and onwards.
Both lists show many biases, the most glaring one is the limited presence of foreign titles and comedies, even ones that are critically acclaimed like 30 Rock, but the main reason why I think the list doesn’t fit the “Must […] Before You Die” idea is that a lot of the titles mentioned provide the same experience, so instead of it being 100 different things, it’s more or less variations on 25 things.
Once again, I think the work you’ve put in it is admirable but you’d be surprised how many good shows are out there that aren’t popular, doing things that nobody else is doing, and that’s more valuable than watching 25 superhero shows and 25 gang shows featuring the same themes and ideas. Having stories from different eras is also equally important.
Have a good day.

Yeah fair take, I actually agree with a lot of that - the list definitely leans Western and could use more variety
But it’s not just a “what’s popular” list either. Tons of hyped shows didn’t make the cut - The Witcher, Euphoria, The Walking Dead, Sex Education, Vampire Diaries, Riverdale, Money Heist, You, Prison Break, etc. So it’s not just 100 mainstream picks - made it purely on quality, not just hype.
tbh, the idea of doing “100 different best shows in their time and genre” sounds interesting and diverse.
Appreciate the feedback though, always down to hear other angles.

I think it’ll depend on what’s your definition of quality, in this context quality is defined as “something that a lot of people agree on”, wheras for a critic it could be something different. For what it’s worth, I also hate the lists that actual critics make. I think RollingStone did a list of sitcoms recently and I had so many gripes with it, so I hope you didn’t take my comment too negatively because I don’t think your work was bad or anything like that. The biases are inherent in the data itself, based on who’s voting and their biases.

For a show like Cheers or Frasier, which are both considered comedy masterpieces, to show up on this list, there have to be enough voters out there who have seen it and appreciate it, and I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who do, they just aren’t voting on apps.

Once again, thank you for the work you’ve put into this, I hope my comment wasn’t a bummer because that’s not my intention. It just stirred something in me seeing how data-oriented life in general is becoming and how reductive it becomes when applied to something extremely subjective like the arts.

No worries at all - I didn’t take your comment negatively, and I really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts so thoughtfully. I totally get what you mean about how subjective quality is, especially when it comes to art and entertainment. Algorithms and ratings can only capture so much, and yeah, they often reflect who’s voting more than anything else.

And you’re absolutely right - shows like Cheers or Frasier deserve way more love. For what it’s worth, Frasier actually landed at #160 in the list, which is still pretty far down considering its legacy. But again, that’s the nature of crowd-based rankings — they’re imperfect, but still interesting to look at.

Thanks again for the thoughtful comment - I really enjoyed reading it.

Wow. How much data did you download?

huh, no download, I handcrafted that list like a medieval monk transcribing scrolls - one line at a time, well, I aged a little

Ah, I misunderstood what you did.

That explains why it took so much time.

I think that list is not very good because not everyone likes every genre :stuck_out_tongue:

List is definitely showing some bias towards people with a tendency to rate series online. Which probably lends an age bias to it.

FWIW there’s at least 50 shows on there that definitely won’t be watched by me before I die. Series I either gave up on or have zero appeal.
