if you come across a decent alternative, please pass it on. I’m aware of Simkl, but their non pro users still can’t create custom lists.
I know people are unhappy but this is highly inappropriate. If you are looking to refer to another service, use another forum (like Reddit). If you were in my place of business discussing the competition and urging people to leave, I’d throw you out!
Simkl as of now doesn’t let you create custom lists, unless you go pro. And you cannot create one standalone list for all your movies and TV shows either, even if you go pro! Not the best alternative!
Instead, I would ask myself what have I done wrong to make people come to my place of business to discuss competition… maybe there is a reason why they do that? Maybe they are unsatisfied with something?
your approach to customer interaction speaks volumes about your understanding of people, let alone your business acumen. safe to say, I couldn’t care less.
well assessed. I wish more people were receptive to the problems users are facing, and if nothing else at least be polite in their response — rather than ranting about business ethics they know nothing about.
Why do you really need to use the collection feature if you can’t/won’t pay for it? Trakt is perfectly usable without, right? It tracks what you’re watching (progress/up next), what you’ve already seen (history), and what will come out soon (calendar w/ watchlist). Now if you actually wanna see 100 items in the near future, you’ll run into a problem, but otherwise, things should be fine.
I can’t imagine using ONE Trakt account for 3 different people. Even if you use the same media centre thingy, I hope you can set up different users that scrobble to different Trakt accounts.
That was always possible with Plex back in the day when I used it.
I’m not saying you have to use Trakt this way, but if you’re been using it otherwise, I guess maybe it’s time to give it a try the way it’s supposed to work
And I know there are certain apps that use stuff wrong, but that’s on them. For example using the Collection future as the Watchlist or something idk.
Everything is very reasonable.
But let’s try to have a broader discussion.
A person spends money to access content (goes to the cinema, buys a Blu-ray, subscribes to a streaming service).
Without this content, Trakt is useless because there would be nothing to “track.”
Now, if Trakt is free or has a “reasonable” cost for the features provided/used, people will use Trakt.
If Trakt imposes “brutal” limitations on the free version and excessively increases the cost (doubling the price!) of accessing advanced features without distinguishing between the various functionalities offered (not everyone needs all the VIP features), some (not all, of course) will ask themselves a simple question:
Is it worth paying for something that, in the end, is only useful to track with a nice interface what I’ve watched “elsewhere” and for which I’ve already spent a (sadly increasing) portion of my salary?
Trakt is an “extra.”
It’s not essential.
Netflix, Disney+, etc., are needed, but Trakt is not.
Is it nice to have?
Yes, of course.
Is it necessary?
Absolutely not (to be clear, even Netflix and similar services are not “necessary,” but without content to watch, tracking it doesn’t make much sense).
So what do we do? Cancel the VIP subscription (mine expires in September, and I won’t renew it because the price will rise to 60€).
Do we move somewhere else? And why would we? Trakt is nice, and we’re used to it.
We remain as free users, which basically means a “cost” for Trakt (there are no ads, they don’t sell our data—Younify does, but that’s another discussion).
Do they benefit if people cancel VIP and stay as free users?
I’d say no.
So maybe Trakt should reconsider certain choices, and VIP users should cancel their subscriptions but remain as free users.
We increase the “costs” and decrease the “revenues” (after all, Trakt is a solid business—they’ve already confirmed that—so this won’t hurt that much, ain’t it?).
Maybe, if enough of us do this, they will reconsider these overly restrictive policies for free users and the excessive penalties for those who want to support Trakt by paying a “fair price.”
Note: I started as a free user, and even though I’ve been a VIP for three years, I only use the watchlist (with over 580 items) and the Plex scrobbler. No other VIP features. Even 30€ per year is “too much” for my use, but I thought it was fair to support the site and gladly paid it. But 60€ is madness. I’ll stay as a free user, use the two 100-item lists (currently empty) as my watchlist so I can add another 200 titles, and manually track Plex, just like I do for all other streaming sites.
And for Trakt, I will just be a cost.
I think most of you are using Collections incorrectly (possibly so that you can have a 4th list). Here’s the description that Trakt uses for the use of Collections:
“Your TV show and movie collection — All owned items including Blu-rays, DVDs, and digital downloads.”
In other words, Collections should be things that you have purchased and out right own, like the above…something physical like a DVD or a digital version (downloaded or hosted - I have purchased every Fast and Furious movie via Amazon so those are the only things in my collections list).
I agree. And those that don’t understand that mentioning competitors on this type of forum is bad business. I don’t understand why @justin @Ohifriend @Sonply @sean aren’t doing anything about this and telling his mods here to actually moderate this.
I know I’ll get blasted by this comment and the one above also, and will likely get flagged by the snowflakes…but so be it.
Maybe it’s time to lock this thread and move on.
I understand that…but at the same time, if someone else in my family wants a VIP to Trakt, they can PAY FOR IT THEMSELVE’s!!!
I don’t want anyone else mucking up my Trakt. If someone watched a movie that I haven’t yet, I don’t want my Trakt account to show that I’ve watched it when I actually haven’t.
This would be different if Trakt allowed multiple “Profiles” but it doesn’t.
I’d imagine people are flagging your posts for legitimate reasons, not because we disagree with your opinion. You’ve thrown around all sorts of personal attacks. Congrats, you can call randoms on the internet “young”, “snowflakes”, and whatever other childish insult you can come up with. You’re literally adding nothing productive to the conversation and whomever keeps unflagging your posts is doing a disservice to this forum.

Now that’s funny! I’ve literally offered all kinds of workarounds to the List limits, and many other things. You are just choosing to listen/read what you choose and block out everything else. I applaud you for standing for what you believe in and keeping it up.
Let’s be realistic, most people using trakt don’t “own” anything these days. People can use trakt as they like, and collection is essentially just a normal custom list that already has a name that you can’t change, so people using it as a 4th list is actually savvy seeing that the current limits for free users is borderline ridiculous.
Fully agree with all the points you’ve made.
This one-size-fits-all approach makes no sense, especially the way it is being forced.
In fact, I’d say the only thing it achieves is to increase the appeal of any alternative that has various price points, even if it doesn’t achieve feature parity.

Watchlist and Collection Limits: Free users are now limited to 100 items in their watchlists and collections, down from previous limits.
Absolutely absurd. Truly moronic. I hope your little money grab attempt completely backfires.
Gotta say, I do like your reasoning. Instead of being able to give a bit of money to use some desired features, everyone is being forced to give a lot of money to just keep the features we used to have, again for a non-essential service. I’d also simply rather spend my time (manual tracking and watchlist monitoring) than this much money tbh.
And yes, it is a lot of money.
Breaking it down by day/hour and comparing it to a coffee/take-out is a common sales tactic (especially in the Western world) to make things seem affordable to the gullible. I’m always wary of motivation/intent when someone uses this analogy.
This analogy doesn’t magically somehow increase the value or reduce the price of what you are paying for, nor make it worth the cost. It also doesn’t work on people who don’t frivolously eat out or buy expensive coffees.
That sounds more like a third-party app problem, than a Trakt problem.
Have you contacted the app developer yet?
You’re not VIP, so it can’t be the streaming scrobbler (that’s still in BETA) that’s having issues.
