🚀 Introducing a New VIP Beta of Trakt for Android

Hi everyone! :waving_hand:

We are excited to share the first VIP Beta of the new Trakt app for Android :tada:

This is a completely new app built from scratch. It is lighter, faster and introduces a fresh new design that will serve as the foundation for the future of Trakt on Android.

This Beta does not include everything the current production Android app offers. It is an early look at what we are building next. Your feedback at this stage is very important.

:inbox_tray: How to Access

If you are a Trakt VIP, you can join the Beta and install the new Trakt app for Android using the link below:

:backhand_index_pointing_right: Join the VIP Android Beta

If you are already part of the Beta Group, you can now install the new version directly on your Android device.

If you are not a VIP yet and would like early access, you can learn more about VIP here.

If you have trouble installing or accessing the Beta, please contact us through our support channels and we will help you.

:sparkles: What is Included

This first Beta version focuses on the core experience and a clean, modern and smooth interface.

Fresh New Interface
A redesigned app with a simpler and more fluid experience.

Discover Shows and Movies
Browse popular, trending, anticipated and personal recommendations.

Show and Movie Pages
View overviews, ratings, genres and manage your watch history and watchlist.

Watching and History
Track what you are watching with Continue Watching and browse your history.

Comments
Read comments from the community for shows and movies.

This is only the beginning and we will release improvements and new features frequently during the Beta.

:wrench: What is Missing for Now

Some features from the current Android app are not available in this first Beta. They will return over time with improvements.

Here are some of the features planned for upcoming releases:

:star: Ratings and Favorites
:bullseye: Filters and more browsing options
:globe_showing_europe_africa: Localization with support for more languages
:gear: More profile and account features

Additional updates will follow as the Beta evolves.

:building_construction: Why a New App

The current Trakt Android app has been around for some time and reached its limits. This new version is built on a more modern and scalable foundation so we can:

:high_voltage: Release updates faster
:recycling_symbol: offer a more consistent experience across devices
:sparkles: support new features more easily

This VIP Beta is the first step before replacing the existing Android app with the new version.

:folded_hands: How You Can Help

Your feedback will help us refine the app and shape what comes next.

Please share:

:lady_beetle: Bugs
:light_bulb: Suggestions
:nail_polish: Usability feedback
:purple_heart: Things you like

Post everything in this thread so feedback stays in one place. It helps us track and prioritise effectively.

:eyes: Want a Preview?

If you check it out quickly, you may even still enjoy the limited-time :jack_o_lantern: Halloween theme before it disappears!

Thank you for being a VIP and helping us shape the future of Trakt on Android!

How do you back out of the Beta on Android? I’d like to go back until is fully functional

You should be able to either leave the beta program from the Google Play page or just uninstall the beta and reinstall the production version.

Here’s a guide from Google on the topic.

I installed the Beta and have been testing it a little bit. I can see it is pretty much the same as Lite. With that said, here are some observations:

  • The app is fluid on my Google Pixel 7 Pro. The animations are smooth and the images load pretty quickly.
  • Continue Watching: needs ability to filter out completed shows or items in the watchlist, like the main site, so it only displays shows I am actively watching.
  • Mark as Watched: needs the option to select the date. Tapping marks watched immediately, and I tried tap and hold to see if it showed the option, but it doesn’t. This makes it inconvenient to use the app if you want to use anything other than ‘right now’ as when you finished watching something.
  • Upcoming Schedule: needs option to see the full calendar. Trakt Lite has an icon that takes you to the calendar; the Beta app does not, which makes it very limited and only lets you see the next 5 or so items coming up.
  • Would really like the option to blur spoilers, like episode descriptions and episode images. The image of an episode can give away key info you may not want to have. Maybe use the season poster instead, or give the option on which one to use?
  • Needs Sort options all across (e.g. sort by last watched date, sort by date added to list, alphabetical, etc.).
  • I never saw the Halloween theme
  • Does the app support notifications?

Thanks!

Did all that. No longer in the beta. Re-downloaded, got the old app. Then it updated to the beta again. There’s a bug

That’s already available in the beta.

The ability to rate is not available yet in this beta, this is stated in the post above.

Not yet in the beta.

For the moment, you can long press the :bookmark: button on a content and it will open a sheet with all your lists. This will be improved.

Filtering is part of the missing items in the beta, yes.

You can select a season on top of the episode row. There is currently no season overview.

Not part of this first beta.

You seem to be calling Trending, Anticipated and Popular content as well as Related content as advertising. I don’t think that’s the case.

The TV icon is there to help you discover new TV content.
The Movie icon is there to help you discover new movie content.

This will be improved. Browsing and filtering will be improved.

Thank you :folded_hands:

You can drop them on the web, they will disappear from the Android beta. Dropping will be supported in Android directly in the near future.

Yes, this will be added soon. Thanks for the way you voiced this feedback!

Planned :+1:

Taking note of this one. Not the highest priority but interesting. Thanks!

Yes, this is a big one we are missing right now from the beta.

It should be available now :jack_o_lantern:

Not yet but it is planned.

Did some Googling and found this might help: go to Settings → Applications → Manage apps → Google Play Store → Storage → Clear data, and when it shows an option, choose only Cache.

Then try the above again.

oh god
 the new beta is horrendous
it includes stuff i haven’t started in my continue watching that’s still in my watchlist
and watchlist is it’s own category
 defeats the purpose of watchlist

also sorting is all messed up.. it appears to be sorting in last watched rather than my default of sorting by air date/time

THIS CANNOT BE THE NEW METHOD???

Urgh, not this crap again with watchlist items in your continue watching. They need to sort this out and stop trying to change stuff people will never want by default. It makes no logical sense. I hope for everyone’s sake this is just a bug again.

I think I was not clear explaining this. I did not mean Dropped shows, which I am very familiar with. Right now, on the main site, going to Up Next, which takes you to In Progress, shows you only all the shows you are currently watching, as it should be. However, on Trakt Lite, and also the new Beta App, the behavior is not the same. Continue Watching is showing my active shows + everything in my Watchlist. This should not be the case. Watchlist is a list of shows I am interested to see at some point, but it should not be commingled with what I am currently watching. So, in a nutshell, Trakt Lite and the Beta app are mixing together shows from In Progress AND Watchlist shows. It should not include Wachlist shows in there. I saw another user commented on the same thing. I hope I am explaining myself better this time. Thanks for your attention.

i completely agree with you! it’s so redundant to even have a watchlist if they add everything to continue watching
 it’s so stupid
it needs to allow users to not include shows not started still in watchlist.

Reposting here at Justin’s suggestion

@kcador Is the Trakt team listening to their users at all? Do you all understand that we do not want this change? Folks were very vocal about their displeasure with this change when it infected the iOS app a few weeks ago.

Is your goal to run off every paying user you have left? If so, then I guess you are on the path to success. If not, I suggest you all get your heads out of your backsides quickly.

ETA - Just to clarify, I am talking about the inclusion of watchlist items in Up Next.

“Continue Watching” section is not loading for me

“Uh oh
this wasn’t planned. If this keeps happening, please contact Trakt support.

ae.g: lllegal input: Unexpected JSON token at offset 64423: Expected string literal but ‘null’ literal was found at path: $[18].progress.last_episode.title Use ‘coercelnputValues = true’ in ‘Json f?’ builder to coerce nulls if property has a default value. JSON input:
9635.“trakt”:52779407.“title”:null.“votes”:0."i”

All the functions in my android app as a VIP have been changed and I can no longer find a bunch of stuff. I can’t get rid of the beta. And the cost is going up from 30 to 60 USD dollars from last year. I use this app several times a day and now it is useless. Won’t be renewing

We are working on the Continue Watching to make it better. The Watchlisted items will be separated from the pure Continue Watching soon. This is something we communicated already in another thread on the forum about the Up Next feature specifically. I’m just mentioning this because this is not something I’m saying to appease you. It is a feedback we received already and we are working on it.

Can you be more specific about where? Thanks!

Agreed. Currently, only a few basic functionalities are available in the beta. Your feedback helps prioritize what we should include in the next one.

You are right. Can you please confirm the following doesn’t work:

  • open a movie detail page
  • long press the ribbon icon
  • see a list of all your list pop up
  • tap a list to add the movie in that list
There might be a bug here.
And as I said, this will be improved (especially the discoverability of it).

Sorry, I think we are mixing things up here. Let me share more:

This is a good point, thank you! We are looking at another way to group things (navigation) and we are going in that direction.

All planned!

I’ll bring this up to the UI/UX team. Just a note: what you are describing is true for the Android app because the previous design used sections but it’s not true for all the platforms. So comparing a specific platform to the whole Trakt Lite experience is not really fair.

You can open the full list by taping the title (Continue Watching >).

I’ll come back to this later.

Thanks for your feedback!

What you said! This is coming to the new Android version in the near future.

Yes!

Yes! We do all understand that some users do not want this change. We are improving things constantly while listening to our users (not just on the forums) and we are also looking at our analytics data. You are not alone but also you are not alone.

No!

Look at my other replies: I think I’ve made it clear we are listening. This is a beta for a new Android version (not a beta of a new Up Next), the Continue Watching and Start Watching is a change we are rolling out because we don’t have our heads in the sand.

We’re on it. Thanks for the report!
