šŸ’¬ New Trakt Feedback

Oh I know that. It’s just ridiculously frustrating to constantly have to switch back and forth between versions. One should be allowed to choose a setting in preferences of what we want to use instead of having V3 / Lite with its incomplete usage and function being jammed down our throats.

mine never switches so im not sure whats happening with others’. and ive tried it on multiple browsers on both my pc and my phone

the panic I felt when I couldn’t get to Classic Trakt, I hate app.trakt so so so much. I’ve reached my breaking point, goodbye VIP. These last few years were nice, it’s a shame Trakt had to rebrand itself into absolute shit. Wow.

I cannot believe they keep trying to force this on us while it looks like this. Do the designers and developers take no pride at all in their work?

Just got forced the update and the webpage reloaded anytime I hit the login on sign up button cycling back to the login page. Thankfully the link for the older Trakt still works so I can actually use the service.

I do not want this new version. Everything I see of it is counterintuitive to the way I use the service. I cannot believe we have to live like this.

Hopefully devs are still watching this thread for feedback. I just got the auto-redirect to the app version, where you need to manually type ā€œ/dashboardā€ to go back to the old one.

I’m a web developer and there are still a lot of UI/UX problems when browsing on desktop, and some general changes that bother me personally.

As a frame of reference, the main things I do on this site are check for upcoming episodes of shows I’m watching, or mark recently-watched shows and movies as Watched, either under Continue Watching or by searching. I don’t favourite, I don’t socialize, I don’t comment unless something’s irregular with the listing, I don’t add things to collections or even know what ā€œcheck inā€ means. But I’ve been using this site daily for probably a decade.

I browse on my Windows desktop with Waterfox (as of a couple weeks ago when I switched from Firefox) or Opera GX, or very rarely on my Android phone in Chrome.

  • The media filters at the top don’t work, and don’t seem particularly useful. There’s a disabled ā€œFilterā€ button in the corner, and I don’t see why these buttons wouldn’t just be an extension of that.
  • The left-side navbar is an extremely irregular choice. AppleTV-style apps for use with a remote control have similar designs, but typically still have labels and are more top-left-aligned than left-side and centered. The current position is uncommon to reach with a mouse and feels awkward. Every one of those apps has a browser version with a classic navbar at the top. Collapse the Movie/Show filter into the Filters and move your icon bar up there, left-aligned (with nice margins) near the logo and VIP button, with text next to the icons.
  • Home/Dashboard being the second option is very disorienting, and also feels like mimicking the UX of a wildly different type of device. On browsers and mobile apps, the default option is expected to be the first one. I keep clicking the searchbar when trying to get back to the homepage. It should be placed first, and another search button should be added closer to the logo at the top of the page, as that’s the main action most people will do when they access the site. (ā€œI’ve just watched something, time to log it in Traktā€)
  • In Waterfox (same engine as Firefox), my Continue Watching has a horizontal scrollbar, and the extra height adds a 1-pixel vertical scrollbar. It seems there’s an overflow-x: auto that’s being introduced on @supports (-moz-appearance: none) { .section-list-container.section-list-has-drilldown.svelte-1rbin7o .section-list-horizontal-scroll:where(.svelte-1rbin7o) for some reason. This introduces inconsistent behaviour and looks bad.
  • I prefer the posters for the shows over the individual episode preview images, which can contain spoilers. I see search results are still showing the posters that way. It would be nice to be able to toggle these and show the posters again, even if it significantly increases screen height.
  • More text on the shows should be hyperlinks. Also, the search results should display the name of the show in text. On Continue Watching, I keep expecting to be able to click on the show name, season number, episode number, and episode name, and go to appropriate places based on each.
  • For some reason a bunch of dropped shows from my past are now showing up under Continue Watching, greyed out. I think I muted them before ā€œdrop showā€ was a proper option, so maybe I have to formalize that more. Not necessarily a problem, but just surprising. Hitting Enter on the ā€œdrop show?ā€ pop-up seems to cancel, rather than confirm. It would be nice to have a quicker way to do this, seeing as I now have to more concretely re-drop a bunch of shows.
  • I miss some of the stats. The daily breakdown of how much I’ve watched over the last month was fun, and I enjoyed bragging to friends when I would mark a whole show at once and tell them that I watched 72 hours of something in one day.
  • I miss a lot of the date-based grouping. Having my Upcoming Schedule grouped by days gave a better view at a glance of which days had which shows. Listing them by day of the week is important for me planning which shows will be out on the nights I watch with friends or family. Displaying the time, platform, and special notes (premiere/finale) was helpful for a lot of planning as well. Randomized quirky messages on open days are an unnecessary distraction and don’t make me enjoy the site more, I’d prefer a more upfront ā€œNo Upcoming Shows.ā€ or something.
  • The overridden scrollbar in Chromium browsers is an accessibility issue, people aren’t going to realize they can scroll because the bar only appears when it’s moused over and it’s narrower than usual. It also feels odd that the filters at the top aren’t stuck in place when scrolling.
  • Something about the background just feels lacking. It’s a grey site with things floating in it. A small separator line between some of the components would add a bit more of a structured feeling, or at least a visual change between the panels and the navbars. Maybe a gradient behind one background, and a flat colour behind the show panels and text, that would give a satisfying visual separation between them while still being responsive and modern.
  • I didn’t realize at first that clicking the different seasons of a show was updating the list of episodes being shown. Perhaps the upper panel should say ā€œSeasonsā€ and list them, then below that it should say which season is currently displayed, above the episode list.
  • Have we lost the ā€œwatch all remainingā€ option on Continue Watching? I’d be fine with it under the three-dot menu, but I’ll often catch up on a show all at once and only mark it in Trakt once I’m finished.

Positives:

  • I like being able to mark a new episode as watched with a single click.
  • I haven’t tried it yet, but the queue feature could be nice. I have a big text document of shows and movies and it may be convenient to have that duplicated here.
  • I think the JustWatch integration is pretty sleek. If possible, the ability to change which country’s sources are displayed would be helpful, as I’m often coordinating shows with both American and Canadian friends.

Now that I’ve used it a bit more while writing this message, I’m over a lot of the UX shock that accompanies a big change like this. I still think all of the points I listed above are important and should be considered, and almost every big UI redesign like this is a mistake, but I can deal with the redesign and will continue using the site, hoping it will improve over time.

You’re giving a lot of good insight, I would recommend also leaving a feedback thread or opening multiple issues in their GitHub repo since devs most times respond directly over there

How do I load the new page? I just get a blank screen when going to trakt.tv now:

I just tried looking at the v3 trakt link you attached for your profile, and for some reason it reloads every single second. This really is super annoying, I wish they would scrap this new version and stick to the far better older version.

I’ve been paying for the VIP not because I wanted this label, but because I wanted to support the developers. Now I can state that the new trakt is totally unusable. The minimalistic UI hurts my eyes, it looks like a mobile app opened on a desktop. All my 1-10 scale ratings are now 1-5, which makes little to no sense to me. I want to use a desktop website, not a minimalistic something on a 16ā€ screen. I hope the developers will allow us to use the old website, I don’t need new features, I want it to just work. Otherwise I quit, sorry. It was nice 3 years together, but now you’ve destroyed everything I loved so much. Just why? If people want to use a website optimized only for iphone, I don’t. And again, how could you change the rating system to 1-5 when people have been using 10-grade system for years? How should we adapt to this? So many questions.

I was blissfully unaware of Lite until 30 minutes ago when the Android app updated and I checked the website and suddenly I had no idea how to do things I wanted to do. My reaction is that Trakt now looks and behaves like every other website, and that it has lost what made it special, the details that made it appeal to nerds and geeks. Presumably the new design will attract a broader audience, but I’m guessing it’s the nerds and geeks who were paying to be VIPs. I’m going to play around to see if there’s still a way to filter by streaming service, etc. If not I might as well use free Just Watch. Unless there will be something new rolling out for VIP membership that will differentiate Trakt.

The announcement sais that ā€œclassicā€ Trakt (aka. the one I paid for) is till available during the transition.

I can’t seem to be able to access classic Trakt any longer.

How can I please access classic Trakt?

Or is the transition to the ā€œLite UIā€ over? And how did I miss the corresponding announcement?

Just use this URL Discover. Track. Share. - Trakt

Holy moly just saw this today, all my apps updated and useless, website redirects to new one unless you force some action to the old one? It looks horrendous and is totally unusable, and not in the ā€œtakes time to adjustā€ kind of way. You can’t even scroll through the episodes on a show if you don’t have a trackpad or mouse with side scrolling? Why are the Reviews and Extra’s above the seasons and episodes? Every action is just an icon with no hover text to see what it actually does?

V3 is nothing like the Trakt I signed up for, please do not force it upon me.

This is actually the best description I’ve heard so far. I get the need to modernize the platform and if you want to, yes, unify UI between devices, it’s all fair. But as you said, v3 is not for the nerds and geeks anymore. It’s lacking information density and all of the tiny features that made Trakt so loved by many people. And yes, they’re slowly adding back features and everything, and I’m sure most of it will come back, but having a platform with most of the features but missing all of the small stuff is not what will please year-long Trakt users.

I understand the redesign of your app and site.

What I dont understand is forcing it to everybody while it’s missing a lot of features that we are using.

Where are all my settings on web? Why can’t I view the calender on the app? This is why I’m paying for VIP for years.

This should still be in beta, you should only push it to production when the same features are present or its improved. None of it applies right now.

Sort search by Show or Movie buttons do nothing.
Tried with multiple browsers and incognito.

I am relatively new here, and I get the griping about the price, etc. I thought current pricing was a bit much, but Trakt is still powerful and serves all my needs to have a consolidated media organization area. One of the KEY reasons I plunked down the funds was for the Library. That is the primary reason I am here. The new interface allows NO access to it. It is annoying and frustrating, and if this is an indication that the Library is going to be hidden/taken away, I’m out, and I want a refund. One of the most terrible trends in tech has been putting out half-baked partially functioning garbage that does not match the features of previous versions and always seems to be an isidious way to just add back random things incrementally hoping that they can still get away with fewer features while charging more. It’s a terrible trend and needs to end. Pushing an incomplete version is a terrible idea and a terrible user experience, ESPECIALLY without offering any clear links to prior functionality from the new interface.

There’s not even an indication that things are in my library when clicking into an item (or any other info exept for watched/not watched and ratings). No way to access any indication of owned content or metadata behind it. This is on top of the downgrading of the symbols in the AppleTV interface which makes it much more difficult to tell the state of content at a glance w/out sitting there and focusing in to make out the terrible new icons. C’mon folks…..the new UX on both devices and web is far worse functionally which makes it terrible. You have severely broken the functionality of the platform with these ā€œupdates.ā€

I have always felt the streaming device versions were a bit more limited in comparison to the web and iPhone app, but now….you have managed to make the website even less functional than the AppleTV app, which is quite a special accomplishment.

It just keeps getting worse. What is ā€œStart Watching?!ā€ Is it supposed to be the Watchlist? If it is, it’s not at all organized like the watchlist that I have spent a fair amount of time organizing in the order that I want it displayed.

Respectfully, I just have no idea who this is for anymore… I would wager that your most-active users who are willing to weather price increases and beta and so on, are there because Trakt has had a long history of deep, customizable data and options for super nerds like all of us VIP users. And yet, in addition to all those things people have highlighted in this thread, the episode-level is most glaring to me.

Previously, looking at the episode level had a busy, yes, but very valuable set of options which were - to me - what makes Trakt different and valuable. Detailed spoiler-protection options, nuanced cataloging (different plays, changing when you watched something, adding to lists, etc)

And yet, with this latest version, it’s seemingly all stripped away

So, in all sincerity, who is this for? Who wants a sleek, spacious website with far less functionality and is willing to pay the asking price for it? For the time being, I’m incredibly grateful that https://trakt.tv/dashboard still works, but I can’t but feel like this is a disaster of user-knowledge and understanding your own value as a website/app for the sake of being able to report some win of modernization absolutely no one is asking for and will only shed the most passionate and core userbase
