Respectfully, I just have no idea who this is for anymoreā¦ I would wager that your most-active users who are willing to weather price increases and beta and so on, are there because Trakt has had a long history of deep, customizable data and options for super nerds like all of us VIP users. And yet, in addition to all those things people have highlighted in this thread, the episode-level is most glaring to me.
Previously, looking at the episode level had a busy, yes, but very valuable set of options which were - to me - what makes Trakt different and valuable. Detailed spoiler-protection options, nuanced cataloging (different plays, changing when you watched something, adding to lists, etc)
And yet, with this latest version, itās seemingly all stripped away
So, in all sincerity, who is this for? Who wants a sleek, spacious website with far less functionality and is willing to pay the asking price for it? For the time being, Iām incredibly grateful that https://trakt.tv/dashboard still works, but I canāt but feel like this is a disaster of user-knowledge and understanding your own value as a website/app for the sake of being able to report some win of modernization absolutely no one is asking for and will only shed the most passionate and core userbase
The new version is so bad that I think itās time to jump ship and cancel my VIP account after 3 years. Time to vote with my wallet I suppose. I think this is the worst redesign of any web app I have ever seen quite honestly.
My temporary work around until they fix V3 (if they ever do) has been to make a tampermonkey script that has created not just a return button at the top of the new V3 to return to the old ādashboardā V2 site, but also to put a drop down menu with links to all the missing items I use regularly. Obviously once V2 goes offline thatās useless but at least temporarily it makes browsing easier for me when I get redirected there.
Iām also guessing seeing as thereās been no response from Trakt that at this point they donāt care what we as consumers think. Whatever transpired at Trakt in the way of new blood, acquisition, delegation or whatever happened, the ānewā team has destroyed this App. They should just change the name from Trakt to Gaslight.
Any alternatives? Thereās always letterboxd and I have every intention of moving my movies lists onto there but anything for TV shows? letterboxd has said they want to add shows but I think they have other priorities since they seem to be focusing on movie rentals and such
Self-hosting Yamtrack is an awesome alternative. Or the other similar one which I wonāt mention here but is easily found. One where the dev actually responds to paying users.
Yeah same. I cancelled my VIP yesterday (after 4 years). Renewal would have been on the 7th of February so I guess they did me a favour with pushing the new mobile app yesterday.
Sorry, but Trakt Lite feels a bit half-baked at the moment. My Continue Watching list is filled with random movies I did not finish years ago, instead of the TV shows I am actively watching.
I understand that you have a vision for where this is going and that you believe it will be better in the long run. All I am asking is that you please keep the old trakt dashboard trakt.tv / dashboard functioning as it does today while you continue building and refining the new experience.
The new site might work well for mobile devices, for which it looks like it was made, but on a desktop browser it looks horrid. Not to mention that I can take one look at the old dashboard and get 3-4 times as much information as I can with the new site. Thatās not overloadā¦ itās just right for a desktop experience.
Iām heading back to the old site, for as long as it continues to exist. Thanks to the hints in earlier posts to this thread on doing that. When it no longer does, Iāll be looking into other options.
They have a cost problem where v2 is too expensive maintain. So they are desperately trying to push users onto the Lite/v3 platform which is simple and much less of a resource-hog due to many limited and removed features from the previous platform.
v2 is too expensive because they have a revenue/income problem, due to them been bleeding VIP subscribers for months and months now.
VIP subscribers are dropping because they initially subscribed for a feature-rich and semi-customizable platform that catered towards power-users on a desktop, which is now promoted and designed strictly as simple/Lite made-for-mobile platform. (I suppose the double/quadruple price increase of the VIP subscription also contributed a bit here)
Itās just a bad negative feedback loop here where this service gets simplified and stripped of features to save costs, and VIP subscribers leave as most of what they initially subscribed for is eroded away, and to make up for less revenue the developers implement changes that reduce their costs.
Iāve been a paying VIP user for 10+ years and I recently decided to cancel my subscription (runs out in Sept 2026). I have faint hope that this direction changes. If it does, Iāll resubscribe. If it doesnāt, I guess I have 8 months or so to figure out where Iāll go next.
I use trakt as a database, and I manage it manually as I havenāt bothered to link my Jellyfin to it, mostly because itās not as easy as it seems to be with Plex or actual streaming services. I mark things as watched, and I ocasionally need to read blurbs to find an episode. I also almost exclusively use it on a laptop or desktop.
Both of these features are technically present, but with far worse UX. First, itās far less intuitive to see what has or has not been watched. Minimalist icons without associated text or even an infobox. The history page is just an āinfinite" grid, ungrouped and unfilterable (I assume filters are in the works, judging by the disabled icon in the corner). Itās also far less convenient to read blurbs, as they only exist inside of the episode page. I also canāt Ctrl+F for a date or a name as before, unless itās in the title. If I want the next or previous episode, I need to scroll the horizontal list, that always resets to the start and doesnāt highlight the currently displayed episode. If I want a different season, I need to go back to the main show page and start again.
On a less use-case specific note, I hate the minimalist look. Itās less explicit, not really intuitive, thereās a bunch of empty space, the text size is all over the place with things like the ratings being so small they might as well not be there - both in desktop and mobile, surprisingly. And, I know Iām in the minority using this on a computer, let alone a desktop, but I canāt horizontal scroll with a mouse-wheel or the keyboard (except for the reviews, somehow). Everything is just slower to do.
Even on mobile it doesnāt look or feel great. In a computer itās borderline unusable. I can see the trends youāre following, and Iāve read in the thread that the numbers are looking good, but for me the general experience is simply worse. I hope I still managed to be constructive enough.
Yeah, being able to log multiple plays of something is a deal breaker for me. I watch more than 300 movies a year, sometimes I need to check and see if Iāve seen something before, and get to be surprised when I can see that Iāve actually seen it more than once lol Same with TV shows, I like to be able to see in data that Iāve spent X number of hours watching this one TV show because Iāve watched every episode at least 5 times. Going from that to simply seen/not seen is not good enough.
Same here. I started using Trakt in 2020 because of the feature heavy experience it gave not to get this modernized trash design forced on me. In regards to the 1-10/1-5 scale the worst part is in the backend its still a 1-10 scale that theyāre trying to forcefully change in the frontend. When you long press on the iOS app on the scale youāre able to pick from 1-10 but now itās stupidly named from 1-5 stars in half star increments.
