It would be cool to have a separate rating system that would allow users to add a reaction to episodes and / or Movies, not only will this create a totally new and exciting data source for the API, but it will also encourage people to be more interactive within the community. I also took a little time out of my day today to quickly throw together a few rough mock-ups which I have attached.
Overall, there’s a few ways that a feature like this could be implemented. For my mock-up, I tried a few different combination found throughout, my favourite approach being 1b + 2a, allowing for custom text and an emoji. If implemented, this field should have a word count / character limit, always displayed in capital letters alongside a profanity filter ( which goes without question ).
It’s also worth noting that 1b could be easily be limited to V.I.P. which would mean anybody can vote for any number of reactions that have already been created, but you must be subscribed to create new ones. ( may be worth having a default set of reactions )
(1a) Pre-defined :
Limited set of reactions that have been pre-defined by you.
(1b) User-defined :
Unlimited set of reactions that can be created by the community at any given time giving users the ability to create or vote for anything they like. ( my favourite )
Bonus Option: Emoji
(2a) Include :
Allow use of a single emoji alongside one of the methods above. ( my favourite )
(2b) Exclude :
Don’t allow use of a single emoji alongside of the methods above
(2c) Only :
Only allow the use of a single emoji instead of text for the methods above.
While I applaud the enthusiasm and effort, IMO I feel that’s a little too much, too distracting. I’m satisfied with 1-10 scale. If it’s (for example) a comedy and it’s a 8-10 we know it’s funny, And highly recommended. Too many distracting emojis also makes the website look childish. Like I said this is only my opinion.
Welcome to the community. Keep posting.
Don’t worry about it man, it’s okay to have your own opinion. However, you must’ve misread the part where I said “separate” rating option hahaha. I don’t want to remove the old rating system by any means, there will always be a need for it. You can’t beat a good old 1-10 to get an generalised quality rating, but that’s as far as it gets you.
Reactions as an additional rating system would serve a totally different purpose. Having such an ability gives you (at a glance) the ability to get a feel for an episode or movie without reading comments or reviews, which, if were being honest, are really lacking on on trakt, even more so on the episode front. Unfortunately the community doesn’t engage enough on that front and I believe given a simplistic, one word approach to “review” an episode would encourage users to interact more without needing to spend time writing out a comment or a review.
I would also bet it wouldn’t be too in your face or “distracting” as you put it, this is just rough enlarged design that I put together for the sake of visual aid, it’s in no way final art hahaha. Realistically it would only show the first row with a button to expand and see more or create a new one.
I like the idea! Though I’ve honestly no idea where it would “fit” on the website.
My favourite is the 1b + 2c version
For episodes, I never, ever, ever rate anything (because I have no idea how to rate an episode, or shorts or anything that I’ve not wasted hours on. Unless it’s truly, truly enjoyable in my book), but such a reaction would be totally amazing~ I’d definitely use that.
I actually asked myself where this could “comfortably” sit on the website, so I played around a little bit and after a few rough placements over a screenshot found the placement looked best around here ( see screenshots ) - funny enough though, once I swapped the assets out for 1b + 2c ( so you could visualise your favourite combo ) it actually looked just as good as my favourite, so I would be happy with either haha
Ooooh I love it! Great design too~ Maybe the … could extend a menu with options for showing more emotions that people have added, or to add an emotion yourself. or something!
A very detailed proposal but imo I don’t think it’s in keeping with the tone of the site. With or without the emojis, boiling a whole episode down to one ‘reaction’ doesn’t make much sense and they are a bit childish. The 1-10 plus comment facility provides the opportunity to react with detail (and let’s you use emojis if you really want to)
Furthermore, a lot of films take you on an emotional journey. You could experience a whole host of responses during the course of it. How/why would you boil that down to a few emoji responses.
I’d probably just limit the reactions to specific ones that are pre-defined, rather than users being able to create them so that they could even be used as filters (in the future), and to avoid too many reactions.
