Request: Customize Reccomendations on dashboard

Users should be able to customize the settings for recommendations.

Settings should include:

  • Ability to turn on/off TV/movies. (I don’t want TV recommendations, only movies)
  • Hide movies users have already watched or are already on a list
  • Weight preferences around movies similar to watch history and new discoveries. (For example: I want 70% of the recommendations to be based on ratings from my watch history, and 30% to be new discoveries)
  • Language setting (only English)
  • Genre settings (only movies of the selected genres…)

Trakt is a great tool for tracking and organizing stuff to watch, a revamped Recommendation feature would be a huge boost to the feature set.

Hey @Subatomic8486

It’s interesting that most of the things you called out we’ve actually tackled already in Trakt Lite. Not sure if you gave it a go or not but I’ll make some notes on your points

Ability to turn on/off TV/movies. (I don’t want TV recommendations, only movies)

You can collapse sections you don’t want to see recommendations are segregated into the Movies / Shows categories (so you can visit wherever you want).

Hide movies users have already watched or are already on a list

Trakt Lite filters out watchlisted and watched content implicitly.

Weight preferences around movies similar to watch history and new discoveries. (For example: I want 70% of the recommendations to be based on ratings from my watch history, and 30% to be new discoveries)

The recommendations algorithm actually takes into account ratings, watch history and favorite activity. We’ve also added the ability to further filter on interest like decade, genre and streaming services  This applies to the entirty of the Trakt ecosystem not just Lite.

  • Language setting (only English)

On Lite we have multiple languages available.

  • Genre settings (only movies of the selected genres…)

Global filters are part of the Lite experience and we allow you to save defaults.

@Subatomic8486 is clearly talking about the regular version, why are you trying so hard to push Trakt Lite? A whole lot of us do not want or need to use it, how is this so difficult to understand?

I don’t get why the team is so insistent on pushing us in a direction we clearly have no interest in going, it’s super counterproductive.

Thanks!

I generally like the UI upgrades for Lite, Trakt definitely needs a face lift. I was talking about the main version of Trakt.

Can I ask what the long term plan is? Is Lite going to be the default UI eventually? Are you planning on merging the functionality of the main site with Lire? Sort of a best of both type thing?

If you thought the pricing debacle was a mess, just wait. If they ever decide to go “there”, this forum would go nuclear.

The main website has some filters available in the dedicated movies and shows recommendations sections. I’m sure we’ll add more, but here is what you can filter on so far. From your original list, you can do genre filtering already. Watched items are always going to be hidden as well.

The recommendations use a different system, and that is why some of these filters aren’t working or not in the same way. I basically used the same advanced filtering system as a starting point, but there appears to be more work needed to make it fully functional.

If they combine the updated and modern UI of Lite AND keep the functionality of the main site, it could be pretty good.

I agree, exclusions are needed. For example, if I search for Science Fiction, the first page is basically all superhero stuff, I don’t want that, I want real SciFi.

There’s a part in settings to filter out watchlisted and collected items from recommendations! Been there for ages actually but yeah can be hard to spot :see_no_evil_monkey:

Also is selecting text and quoting disabled on the forums now (or on mobile?) I couldn’t select and quote that part of your comment…

Oh well.

Waaaaah. Don’t make trakt look like any generic streaming site :see_no_evil_monkey:

I want real SciFi

This is a dilema I also have and I’m thinking about how to solve it every other week

exclusions are needed

This would reduce the problem but won’t necessarily result in satisfying your precise craving if I understand correctly (my assumtion here is real SciFi = Aliens, Space, etc).

For example:

  • SciFi - Superhero => Jurrassic Park :joy:

Personally I hope that we’ll be able to introduce a concept of Sub-Genres (only an idea) where we can actually catalogue all movies with their according specializations to the we can enable filtering on those very specific types of categories when looking to scratch a very particular itch

It’s enabled, but still shows items on my watchlist.

I like the sub-genre idea, here’s how Letterboxd does theirs:

enable filtering on those very specific types of categories when looking to scratch a very particular itch.

I would love this. I’m currently on a “fun” horror / scream queen kick. Finding movies that fit that among all of the other “horror” movies has been difficult.

P.S.
While I’m here, the current filter seems to be too strict on genre. If I filter by [ALL “Comedy” “Horror”] it only picks up a few movies. From what I can tell, if a movie has a third genre, i.e. [Horror, Comedy, Thriller] it’s excluded because it doesn’t fit the “ALL” search criteria. But if I search by ANY, then of course I get a useless mass of results.
