Yeah, I knew it! It is a blackmail operation. Now the good looking interface is held hostage for a VIP subscription.
VIP should get new, additional features, not regular features that were removed.
If the new design is that much better like the announcement tries to gaslight us into believing than that should be the VIP feature, not the other way around.
Definitely never gonna get a VIP subscription now.
Perfect job. Thanks!
Great! you figure it out! Justin you didn’t did a good job covering it!
@MellowGeek
Maybe keep comments like that on Twitter?!
What’s this new logo?! A to-do app? Why does every company nowadays think that they must change their logo/brand every second year?! Look at the most well-known brands. Their identities are fundamentally unchanged and untouched. If they touch it, they tweak it only gently. The Trakt.tv logo was always red with a “T.” Now, we have an unrecognisable purple tick.
I don’t like the purple at all, makes it pretty much impossible to read for me. So had to make an userscript to force the colours back to what they were before. Shame I can’t do the same so my browser shortcut has been rendered useless now. Can we get an option to revert?
Oh yeah that would be fire.
Putting the readable color scheme behind VIP is pure profit optimization.
Like another user mentioned it does give the sense Trakt is moving to IPO or looking for investors to show good numbers especially with the unannounced “exciting” changes.
The team behind Trakt has always been transparent in my eyes with good ideas and sticking thru tough times (server capacity / increase cost / redesigns etc…).
Understand that running this site isn’t cheap but everyone is getting sick and tired of all this subscription nonsense (OG here so one time payment).
Donation drive or Patreon is probably better suited for long term self sustainability.
Plex is running into the same issues with their lifetime subscriptions and no longer feasible long term for their running costs.
Instead of opening up to their community they are adding useless streaming services with redesign after redesign promoting features nobody uses.
People are willing to help so long you remain transparent and willing to listen.
I don’t like the rebranding and pink color :S
A few small tweaks will go out this week for things like pagination links, activity tabs, sidebar links, etc. We’ll continue making small tweaks to the theme as we discover new bugs.
The new theme is purple, does it appear pink on your monitor?
Having a red VIP theme is not going to generate any additional profit. The default Trakt theme was changed to purple. The red theme was added so existing power users (i.e. VIP) can keep the red theme if they wanted to.
Trakt has always been subscription based, either yearly or monthly. Trakt OG locked in our original pricing, but it is still a yearly recurring membership. We appreciate all the OG members who’ve been such long time supporters of Trakt!
No plans to offer the original logo on the website.
The favicon might be cached in your browser. Please try a private browser or re-adding the feed and see if that helps at all. It’s possible I missed a reference somewhere if that still doesn’t fix it.
No no, purple sorry, my bad!
Yes, Safari is notoriously bad at this…
The new icon is a big downgrade, but that was mentioned often enough.
I like the purple visually, but my eyes are programmed to ignore writer/director/etc links in purple because it screams ‘visited link’. Doesn’t work, won’t work.
Now that RELEASED, RUNTIME and such are not bold anymore, they are much harder to read.
I’ve mentioned this before. This is one reason why I know that Usability and Accessability wasn’t taken into account for the color and logo change. Purple is just a bad idea from a contrast standpoint to begin with.
Unfortunately, they won’t share their own polling data, so I created this for my own interest.

Please be honest, don’t just review bomb this.
so basically the thread can be closed.
The site listen to the users (if after all the negativity not only for the change but accusing people of profit and blackmailing) and gave the option of switch. And of course it is going to be a VIP option. It is shocking that people are wondering about that.
Thank you Justin and all the people from the site.
Out for me
@great_vc
I think it’s rather shocking that you are dismissing all the arguments that were brought forward in a civil manner, instead making it sound like everyone should stfu. Sorry, but that’s not how it works.
Also, while I really highly praise and appreciate all the work and troubles the Trakt dev and support team went through in the past to give us this masterpiece of a product, it is still allowed to voice any concerns or dislikes about fundamental or even small changes in the service. To shut that up because you simply don’t want to hear any of that anymore is not solving anything. This site heavily leans on VIP money and many VIPs have stated their concerns with the mostly unwanted and/or unexpected changes.
And while they listened to the feedback to some extend and adjusted some of the changes for VIPs - a lot of things are still unanswered. Why is there no purple/red toggle on iOS? Why the sudden changes in the recognizability of this brand? Why was there no test phase upfront? Why has the social media poll not been revealed? What are Trakt’s plans for the future? How do they justify the $€£ increase of VIP membership by 100+%?
So far a lot of things have not been answered properly (or I might’ve missed it - this thread is really long) and since Twitter came along we all know there will always be people who can’t behave and just throw accusations around. We all have to live with those people. But nevertheless is it valid as a member of this community to communicate concerns and dislikes. And even if it might be painful at first because I’m sure Justin and co. spent a lot of time on this update, they do value the input because they can only learn from that and get even better.
I’ve really given it a fair shot over the past few days, but I just can’t get used to the new logo. It’s not so much the font and color that bother me- though I’ve always associated Trakt with red, and it feels like a loss to change that core identity after a decade.
The main issue is that the logo just isn’t visually appealing or intuitive. It resembles more of a to-do app icon than something for tracking, which doesn’t quite fit the purpose.
You don’t see a problem with making a site worse and only giving the option to go back to the previous look to paying users?!
