Allow VIP users to use old Design, Color Scheme & Logo in the mobile app

This is a feature request to allow users who are VIP to be able to choose the old design scheme for the mobile app. This includes the logo, color scheme, and layout design.

They wonā€™t give us the logo because that rebrand is final, but colors would be much appreciated.

Colors and the layout style.

Having been part of design projects for work many times, people complain initially and eventually get over it. Time to move on.

Iā€™m sorry but this font with the underline is just to freaking cluttered

It looks awful

Just bring back the old style and instead of purple or red make the font color closer to the pink color. It will stand out better

I strongly disagree! They donā€™t get over it, theyā€™re forced to use the new design or any other changes. And there are people (like me) who will look for alternatives and may eventually switch.
Trakt just changed a big portion of their identity without communicating that with their users beforehand. They obviously donā€™t have to communicate that but they also should keep in mind that theyā€™re nothing without their customer base.
But your comment is just symbolic for whatā€™s wrong with many companies these days. Theyā€™re super short sighted and donā€™t value long term commitments and choices anymore. In the end theyā€™re all bland and look and feel and act and cost the same, like the new logo for trakt.

Although I have no gripes with the logo, Iā€™m not too fond of the purple everywhere in the app. Itā€™s especially odd since I can set ā€œredā€ as my accent colour on the site, but it remains purple in the app.

I think itā€™s safe to say that the logo wonā€™t be returning. Weā€™ve included the option to switch your app icon back on iOS, but it wonā€™t be changing elsewhere.

While I agree with you that a lot of brands have ā€˜simplifiedā€™ for perhaps the worse, and I donā€™t plan on rehashing any opinions back and forth like in the original branding update thread as theyā€™re all opinions and people are entitled to their opinions, but personally I think that the Trakt ā€˜brandingā€™ is still in tact with the multi lined ā€˜symbolā€™ which happens to be, rather than a rotated T, a tick now and regardless of how ā€œblandā€ a tick might be, one of the main actions in the app is also a tick - I didnā€™t even realise this until someone pointed it out - which isnā€™t entirely off-brand.

At the end of the day, the features are the most important part and I (and I assume others) will still find and share Trakt with others, who wonā€™t ever know what it was before, for those features, not for the logo. Weā€™re still hoping to improve the app for everyone where possible.

Weā€™re still looking for ways to improve the text that doubles as navigation (eg. those show/season titles, the links within item details) without using the branding colours, but really itā€™s either we use the underline which stands out but I agree feels odd in a way or make it plain if its not a specific colour. I donā€™t think that changing it to pink as you suggest solves anything other than another colour people may just dislike. The ā€˜industry standardā€™ (more on the web) is to use blue for links, otherwise using the appā€™s branding which in this case is purple but personally because we utilise certain colours for different statuses such as purple/blue/green/red for history/lists/collections/ratings using any of them kind of clashes which was why we tried with the underline.

Iā€™m curious as to where youā€™re seeing purple ā€˜everywhereā€™ in the app? If you can send some references to me perhaps I can clarify, but a lot of places for history related actions already used purple or were adjusted to purple for consistency. The rest were adjusted to more neutral colours as far as I understand it.

Also if you can clarify a bit more on this one, Iā€™m not exactly sure what you mean. Most of the design is the same or has been like that for a while (on iOS at least - Android is still a little behind but itā€™s in progress!)

By ā€œEverywhereā€, I mean all of the icons in the bottom bar when theyā€™re selected, all of the ā€œTrackā€ buttons, all of the backgrounds for the ratings when youā€™re viewing a movie/show, and all of the UI elements for watch history (interactions, dates, times, etc.).

In Dark mode, red has always just been more clear to me as an accent colour than purple has.

Stil weird that I can change it for the site UI, but Iā€™m stuck with it for the app right now.

Just referring to have the design in general I depicted in the screenshot

Changing the titles/seasons back to a color instead of underlined. They used to be red.

I currently rely on the oldest beta available because I honestly canā€™t stand the look of the font with underlines. It hurts my eyes. Itā€™s expiring soon which Iā€™m hoping you it will somehow get extended so I can keep using it

I suggested that pink in my edited screenshot above because itā€™s a red pink and itā€™s also within the current new logos color scheme. I literally colored picked it from the logo. The purple against the dark grey made it hard to read but the pinkish red stands out just as the red did

But to be honest it would just be nice for paying VIP users to be able to toggle back to the old design/branding before Trakt ever rolled out the new branding and design

Well as I mentioned all of the history interactions have always been purple in some capacity which is why those were adjusted, regardless of branding, so they wouldnā€™t be changed back to red anyway.

By ā€˜rating backgroundsā€™, assuming youā€™re talking about the show/movie certification rating eg. PG-13, M, R, etc., thatā€™s been purple for a long time.

And the bottom bar seems like a very small percentage of the screen at any one time.

Unless Iā€™m mistaken, thereā€™s really not that much more purple anywhere that wasnā€™t already there.

I honestly recall everything thatā€™s purple now being red in the alpha/beta Android app, so thatā€™s my point of reference.

I understand what youā€™re saying about things being like this for a long time, but this is the first time Iā€™m seeing this thread, so Iā€™m interacting with it.

Iā€™d at least consider the fact that if purple is meant to be the primary colour for watch history, then it makes little sense (to me) to also use it for ratings and bottom-bar icons, since those things are unrelated to one another.

Regardless, this isnā€™t a hill Iā€™m going to die on. Just providing some end-user feedback now that Iā€™ve found the opportunity.

Also, I agree with @Watch_n_rant that the lines under the series and season names donā€™t look good and it looked better when they were coloured (Ideally just not in purple )

Iā€™m unsure if you already have it, but you can toggle on the Up next design in the appā€™s settings. We donā€™t have any plans that I know of to adjust anything else specific but if you can let me know which area are actual pain points maybe thereā€™s a better solution rather than having to support many different UIs.

If itā€™s worth it to you, I can create a build that removes the underline and let you try it out. Can you send me a message with the email you use for TestFlight so I can send it to you?

Iā€™ve sent it to the email on your account, though according to the TestFlight user info you donā€™t seem to have anything installed (which may not be accurate) which is why I thought maybe you used a different email. Either way the build is waiting for Apple review which is generally done within a few hours for TestFlight builds.

Yeah I had to look at the code myself to find that the certifications were always purple. Itā€™s at the point where everything is a bit confusing to remember what it was like before, and if Iā€™m honest it feels like thatā€™s half the issue - people disliked the overload of purple so when it was cut back based on that feedback, everything that was still purple even though it never changed is apparently still a huge issue instead of being fine as it was before.

I donā€™t disagree that using purple for other things ā€œmakes the best senseā€ as I pointed out before too, but for the bottom bar, considering it was a branding adjustment and such a minimal section of the UI I just donā€™t think itā€™s worth having a setting to change only that.

Yeah Iā€™m going to see what we can do about the underline - perhaps I will just remove it entirely for now and go from there.

Either way I appreciate the feedback for sure which was why I was trying to clarify the latest usage rather than anything else .

Hi Tyson, first off I do want to thank you for your insight, support and frequent replies! This is vital for me as a user and I think we can all agree that as a community we always only want to make Trakt better.

Itā€™s just my personal opinion but I feel like in recent months Trakt as a Developer has moved a big portion away from interacting with their users. VIPs used to be rather involved in processes like the ones we are talking about rn. They were tested and discussed here before being officially released. With Trakt 2.0 this suddenly changed. The app was officially released with the new design and the backlash - for whatever reason or part of the update - was rather unwillingly noted.

And Iā€™m actually saddened to see that change of acting more like a big corporation. I donā€™t need more of that, there are enough companies out there we have to deal with that have horrible customer services and only act in the interest of anyone but the customers. Iā€™d hate to see Trakt becoming that and itā€™s nothing Iā€™d pay money for.

Again, this might be just me but my guts tell me that this change is not only design-wiseā€¦

However Iā€™d like to get into some of the things discussed here since Iā€™m still hoping for a good compromise we all can live with.

But before that, one sentence to the logo - sorry, I know at this point itā€™s annoying for you and I get why!
The former logo was THE identification because the T stands for Trakt! Your Brand Name! I donā€™t see how a check mark with now weird looking multi-linings is upholding the brand name when itā€™s just depicting one of many actions within the service. Nothing of it fits. Itā€™s square, multicolored, and design-wise not timeless - on the contrary.

Regarding the colors: Iā€™d suggest a slider that acts like the one on the website. On default itā€™s set to your new design and has everything in purple - thatā€™s all the things that are underlined rn, all the menu text like ā€œview allā€ and such, the ā€œtrackā€ logos in the Up Next section as well as all the highlighted menu items in the bottom.
But it will also feature a red option that turn ALL the above red again - like they used to be! The check mark was always purple - since itā€™s a big bar now for some time it can stay purple as well as the age ratings - they were always purple I think. But all the rest used to be red - and many of us like it that way.

One last suggestion: please change the search bar area. I donā€™t know why we have the logo, a burger menu and the profile all next to it now making the search bar unnecessary small.
I donā€™t need the logo there, no matter the design, I know what app Iā€™m using.
I also donā€™t see the importance of putting the profile up there when I can have it easily accessible in the bottom bar which I prefer with a large phone to get quick and easy access to my profile.
And the burger menu serves what purpose exactly? Canā€™t it be integrated in the bottom bar as well? On the other hand, if youā€™d delete the other two from the search bar area I think it can stay up thereā€¦
But for now this is way too cluttered imo.

Again thank you. And thank you for reading through my post, Iā€™m sorry it got so long.

@Parzival thank you for this reply this was my exact thoughts

@Ohifriend I also want to thank you for being so responsive and insightful and transparent

No worries, Iā€™m happy to try provide more context where possible.

I suppose the way I see the recent changes (and I guess Iā€™m a little closer to the product so maybe am biased) is more that the rebrand was happening in some capacity either way, and I think a lot of discussion and adjustments were still made to address the feedback where possible without just ā€œreverting the whole thingā€ which isnā€™t exactly always viable. Other than that, as far as I know, all the other app changes have all been put through the VIP users first as usual and we definitely value everyoneā€™s feedback, but also canā€™t please everyone either. As far as I know weā€™re still trying to keep that community involvement the same as always.

So yeah while I agree that maybe the T was part of the brand, if it was changing anyway then who knows if other possibilities wouldā€™ve been even worse and at least existing users have a ā€œreferenceā€ to the old logo within the new one. As with anything, perhaps itā€™ll evolve a little slowly over time but right now itā€™s whatā€™s staying.

For the colours, we may be able to do that but it requires a little more time to do so and is a little lower priority at the moment which was why Iā€™ve tried to reduce the colours for now instead.

For the search bar, currently it was meant to become a little more like the website layout and open up some more space for other tabs, and based on some other VIP feedback after the change Iā€™ve added a way to access the profile from the bottom bar by long pressing the home tab too. I donā€™t think the search bar size reduced that much and once opening search itā€™s a full width anyway so itā€™s more of a fake search bar as itā€™s always been.

If that takes time thatā€™s fine. My only ask is to just extend the expiration of the oldest beta version in test flight.

I rarely go on the website so the search bar changes to the home tab did more harm than good when using an iPhone

My only ask is to just extend the expiration of the oldest beta version in test flight.

Is that even possible?

(I think all builds have a lifetime of 90 days and after that the developer has to upload a new build?)
