Convert "Reports" feature to discussion like TMDB

Hello,

I want to start off by saying I love this site and use it religiously. Recently, I’ve tried to become more active in the community and help “clean up” the excess of data and movies/shows listed on the website due to duplicates or incorrect content.

I’ve been noticing that TMDB users sometimes add Special episodes that are just marketing material or other videos related to the show that aren’t really “Special” by definition. I recently made a report on the Titans show regarding the special episodes being random promotional material from the show’s social media pages however misworded my report. I tried to report it again because I was rejected with a clearer reason, however, since I recently reported it, the system won’t allow me to do it again.

As such, I was hoping that the reports feature can become more of a discussion thread so it’s easier to explain and have a conversation regarding whether a specific movie/show should be updated, changed, or removed.

Thank You!

Because it works so well for TMDB…

TMDB is organized as a wiki, therefore any change or correction is supposedly a matter of public debate. That’s why reports are formatted as forum topics, rather than a message to the site devs or admins.

What I have found myself wanting to do is to be able to ask a follow up question. When I report something, it will sometimes come with a message from the responding staff member. Sometimes I have found myself wanted to reply to that message (either to provide additional information or to ask for clarification about something) and there is no real mechanism to do that other than file a new report on the same entry and hope whomever responds is either the same person or can easily reference past reports to understand the context.

I understand if the people responsible for answering reports don’t want to get locked up in a back-and-forth discussion/argument, but there are time where it would be nice to have some way to append one’s original report with more information.

Specials, by definition, include interviews and behind-the-scenes footage (including episodes clearly created for publicity and marketing - and possibly straight-up commercials), rather that just being additional in-universe content to the related show. So, that’s probably why your reports are being rejected.

I think OP meant a discussion like giving a reply to the report.

I think that’d be great too. Sometimes I want to amend something to my report before it gets handled.

Or even just make it so the handler can toggle something like “ask reporter can reply” if handler has followup questions.

That’s not true though. Specials are only specials is they are specials for an obvious reason due to naming like “episodes 0” or episode 2.5. Or Christmas special and not having as episode 22 number or something.

Or if it’s something like you mentioned and it has a clear director credit etc.

You can read all the details on the tmdb content bible.

What you’re saying is true for the hot mess that’s tvdb though.

I agree the main thing is we need to be able to re-open and reply to tickets, especially if there was a mistake. Just had this issue the other day. Currently you have to wait some time to send another ticket instead of just updating the one in progress.

There is a world outside of TMDB. And in that world the term Special for a TV show or movie means all kinds of things, it always has. And that broader definition of specials are part of, and constantly being added to, TMDB’s own database. With that, and Reman’s own attempts to narrow the definition being repeatedly shot down, it’s probably best not to throw stones.

But he’s talking about tmdb users adding stuff that isn’t a special. So we are talking about tmdb there

Actually, concerning Titans, all those 21 specials are bonus features on the season 1 and 2 DVDs. I have also fought this battle and lost. It seems once a DVD includes anything new it is considered fair game and a special.

TMDB recently started to consider DVD specials as true specials, so they are not deleting those anymore. One of their mods replied to one of my reports saying that now they are allowing it.

If they consider them as specials, we can have them. We can’t delete them here while they exist there, that’s why your report was rejected.

If it was something actually on the DVD, I rest my case for the Titans issue specifically. I think any sort of “bonus features” or “additional features” that exist as special aspects of physical media should actually count as specials. Apologies for bringing this issue to light; it was just a misunderstanding on my end as I couldn’t find any of those episodes online except as captions on Facebook posts for the show. Still believe that replies to tickets would be a great feature.

I can definitely agree with that

and possibly straight-up commercials

I think that’s unfair… then every trailer or tv spot for every piece of media should be in the Specials section which would just be stupid in my opinion.

In spite of what I’ve already said, I do think it would be nice to be able to differentiate between specials that are actual additional show content and specials that are interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, ancillary material et al (and hide such from view at a global level or on a series by series basis).
