There are many episodes with the WRONG release date. The old UI, we were still able to mark it as watched, but with the new UI, it won’t allow us to mark it as watched. Please make it so that we can mark unreleased content as watched to prevent this dumb thing from happening. It’s annoying that we have to wait sometimes a week later to mark it as watched.
Currently it seems that episodes marked as unaired can no longer be marked as watched.
This causes problems because many streaming platforms release episodes before the official broadcast date, for example:

Entire seasons released at once

Early access / premium early viewing

Streaming release earlier in the day than TV broadcast
In these cases, users may have legitimately watched an episode, but Trakt prevents marking it as watched because it is still marked as unaired.
This breaks watch history and progress tracking, and forces users to come back later just to log something they already watched.
It would be helpful if Trakt allowed marking unaired episodes as watched, perhaps with a warning or confirmation message.
This would better support modern streaming release patterns while still informing users that the episode has not officially aired yet.

This is indeed an issue. Especially with for example items that the BBC stream and release on iPlayer as a season while airing it in an episodic weekly manner on tv.
If you are using the iOS app, long press on the button to mark an episode watched and you will get options to select when you watched it. Not sure about Android or V3 desktop versions.
I think trakt disabled actually marking as watch in the future. But in the past, they were allowing up to 24 hours in the future unless it’s a bug.
afaik it still works in ios, thats what i’ve been telling people since web doesn’t allow you and I dont have android so i cant test it there

Thanks, I didn’t know about the long press thing. It does work on the iphone, but doesn’t work on android.
It would be nice for it to work on all systems. Not everyone uses iOS.

I want to point out that this arbitrary decision is still active and it’s not possible anymore to mark media as watched before the release date.
There is no way in v3 to select it, it is simply greyed out in the webpage and the android app. Even showly doesn’t allow it. There are enough reasons given above that this random limitation should be removed.
(It still works in v2.)
I don’t understand how a dev can spend more than one minute here to disable the date check.
i’m not a dev but i know minor changes can break major systems. and the majority of the team works in ios so dev time for android is slower
I’m not taking about android, it’s on v3 as well. And they explicitly disabled marking something as watched if the release date is in the future. They could just remove that *if-*statement. Is really is that simple.
And looking at the source code at Github, they have a .agents, .claude, .gemini, AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md, so I doubt that even that minor change uses any minute of valuable developer time.

i know it doesn’t work on v3 and android but it does work on ios so one of those things will change. they’re also testing other databases for items that release early on a streaming platform which would help alleviate some of that
I don’t think this issue is getting anywhere near the attention it needs.
There are an increasing number of series that at one point were produced by the BBC that have shifted to being shown / aired / produced (?) by Acorn.
But because of the pettiness of some mods at TMDB and TheTVDB they’ve locked the series and dug their toes in not allowing any modifications whatsoever.
There’s even a series I came across where the Mod has noted the series as “ended” while a new season is in fact about to be aired on Acorn and then 6 months later on the BBC. The Mod is insistent it’s not the same series and has told me even when it will air on the BBC he won’t add it to the seasons.
While this may seem trivial and unimportant, it frankly renders Trakt irrelevant because of its insistence now of relying on TMDB and requiring other databases too. Databases that conflict with each other now and are often inaccurate.
Many of these series can’t and won’t be changed so they remain in limbo. Episodes one watches (and possibly own also) can’t be added, won’t get marked as watched, etc. So what use is a “tracker” App when it can’t keep up to date on what has been watched? It will no longer accurately tell me when the next episode is. So why bother with it?
There are also other items that fall outside of the scope now of being able to be marked as viewed. It’s a frequent occurrence that movies are shown at festivals and not publicly released for years (if ever).
If there’s no air date, we can’t review them or even mark them as watched. It may be more of an edge case, but an App geared towards movie enthusiasts should appreciate people can and do get viewings before a public release.
More common is early screenings of a movie. Again something that creates a problem here with the current blocks.
At least for rating, I remember a discussion a very long time ago, that it should only be possible for released items. Because of weird reasons people started “review-bombing” movies before they could ever watch them. However, marking it as watched doesn’t influence anything and should be possible regardless.

There’s lots of lesser known tv shows that only had a few episodes on TV in the US before they were cancelled.
They later showed in other countries or released on dvd. Currently on V3 it’s not possible to tag those as watched!
