Grouping Lists into "Folders"

It would be great to be able to group lists into folders to make it easier to navigate the list screen. For example, I create ranked lists for major movie series (Harry Potter, MCU, etc.). As I continue to watch more and more favorite series, the lists page gets unwieldy. It would be great to create a folder for “Series Rankings” and put all the individual lists into that folder.

This would make having a lot a list more manageable. I don’t know if these ‘folders’ should be public or not. Meaning, if people viewing your profile should see the folder structure or just a plain list of lists :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m starting to think about this feature request and how it could work. Do you have any example websites or services that implement a similar folder or grouping structure?

I think it’s easy enough to allow create/update/delete of folders, then allowing lists to be assigned to a specific folder. This brings up some questions though:

  1. How are folders displayed on the lists page? My first thought is folders show up first before any “non foldered” lists.
  2. Do folders need a private/public/friends access level? I think this would be independent of the lists themselves since that would be too complex to manage otherwise.
  3. How is re-ordering handled? Related to #1, it would be very tricky to order lists + folders together, so I think list orders would be specific to the folder (or non folder).

Figured this can jump start any discussion.

What if the folders looked like a list but when you click it expands downward to show the lists, similar to how replies on comments work or like the progress page has the drop down for seasons. Then you click on those and it goes to the individual list page. The dropdown should have a slightly different background color to differentiate that you are in a folder.

Kinda like IOS 4 but with a list instead of an icon…

Personally it would be nice to rank them but if not possible then that is what I would go with, as that is what is defaulted to on most file systems.

I don’t think that it would be necessary as it is already on the list level.

There would also need to be some kind of folder system for adding items to a list.

This is definitely my most requested feature. It seems a no-brainer to allow lists to be assigned to specific folders.

For example, if I have created individual annual movie lists (e.g. ‘Stew’s Fave Movies of 1999’ and ‘Movies of 1999 Watched by Stew’) reflecting the past 50 years, and done the same for TV Shows, that’s 200 lists.

These lists could then be moved into sub-folders called ‘Stew’s Fave Movies by Year’ and ‘TV Shows of 2007 Watched by Stew’, etc.

I hear Letterboxd may be working on this feature. And yes, folders would ideally be displayed first by default, with loose or unassigned lists able to be moved on top or below, in the same way they are now.

Whatever the case, Trakt is awesome, and I’m proud to be a 9-year VIP member. Keep up the great work!

Spotify is the first example that comes to mind! As far as I can tell, folders aren’t shown at all on someone’s profile, just whatever lists are made public. On Spotify, you can re-order folders and re-order lists within them independently.

Yes, Spotify is the perfect example. I hate Spotify, but their playlist folders are one feature that seems to work well, and could potentially provide some inspiration for Trakt.
