I looked for Kingdom of Heaven and there was only one entry for it and several of the reviews said you should watch the director’s cut instead. I would have liked to have seen a link to a separate page for the director’s cut version. I don’t know if that’s an individual oversight / bug or a larger problem…
There’s currently no support for that on TMDb, so not on Trakt either.
Just because it isn’t in a database you can import from doesn’t mean it couldn’t be implemented as something people could add by hand…
Sure it could, but it has been talked about/suggested before.
I don’t think it’s a good idea to import half of the entries and have the other half be user added content. Either create a whole new user maintained database, or an existing API from tmdb in this case. (And if you’re gonna to the own database thing it would need to be heavily moderated which I don’t think is really in the planning/timeline for Trakt)
In the case of variants though we are not normally talking about a) large numbers and/or b) large changes to the database records - indeed we could “lock down” what is changeable in the added records. Just a title change, tag change and duration change principally. Which wouldn’t cover all the changes accurately but would cover the key ones and would allow us to review and to store these alternates without requiring too much moderation.
Perhaps a solution, rather than have a separate stand alone record on Trakt, would be to have a field on the main record of the film that indicates/states if there are other versions such as Directors cuts.
Storing the info isn’t a huge problem, but we don’t have a reliable datasource that includes all the alternate cuts a movie/episode might have.
One of these days I feel you will have to bite the bullet and allow trusted users to edit to fill in data you cannot easily import. As long as you implement a straightforward way to “roll back” and punish bulk spammers I would have thought it would be manageable. Especially if you are enabling people to enter data in structured formats like tick boxes or via short text boxes (for inserting or correcting things like cast members) so they couldn’t use it to promote links etc.
Yeah, we’ve thought about that too and I’m sure at some point we’ll allow some trusted moderators to update info not available at the data sources. Good idea.
