Mark a Movie as "Not Finished" or "Abandoned

Hi Trakt team,

First of all, thank you for the recent addition of the “Drop Show” option in Trakt Lite — it’s a very helpful feature for TV shows.

That said, I’d like to humbly reopen a discussion that was originally raised by @sah777 in 2020, regarding the ability to mark movies as partially watched or abandoned.

As of now, Trakt doesn’t seem to offer a way to:

  • Log that a movie was started but not finished (e.g., I watched 35 minutes of a 100-minute film),
  • Display a progress bar for movies like we have for TV shows,
  • Or associate a rating or comment with a partially watched movie.

That last point could be especially useful — sometimes, we start watching a movie, see enough to form an opinion, and would like to rate or comment accordingly. Having a “Partially Watched” or “Abandoned” status would give context to such ratings, and make our movie tracking more accurate.

Now that TV shows can be marked as dropped in Trakt Lite, this feels like the right time to extend a similar option to movies.

Thanks again for considering this, and for all the work you do on the platform !

I like this idea. I just have a list right now of “didn’t finish/put me to sleep” for all the movie’s I just couldn’t sit or stay awake through, and my only solution for logging them was if I could confidently say I made it through at least half, I mark it as watched. But I’d love to be able to mark something as ‘partially watched’

I’ve moved this to Feature Requests so you & others can vote on it.
A similar request exists for TV shows: Set TV Show as Dropped, Watching, Completed or on-hold

Take this as a user reply rather than a Trakt staff reply :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: as to not to take away from the feature request - I can see some value in a dedicated section if many others agree.

Your best alternative right now would be to use Personal Notes. Either specifically on the item itself (which is what I use myself), or you could add to a list and include it as a note on that list item, or you can rate it (doesn’t have to be marked watched, and some people may dislike that but IMO it seems fine to rate an incomplete movie) and add a note to that specific rating.

Adding the note to the specific item would have it appear throughout the apps and website and on the actual summary page if you revisited the page of the movie. The others only within the list, or profile’s notes section.

Depending how or how often you need to view/manage these ‘notes’ probably goes to the option you choose.

  1. if you don’t care to see them all together, then an item note fits best.
  2. if you want to see them all together, a dedicated list probably makes more sense.
  3. if you want to apply ratings to all, and see them all but otherwise they could be mixed with other rating notes, a rating note makes most sense and you could even add a consistent ‘tag’ to those specific notes so that you could filter your rating notes (eg. add “PW” for ‘partially watched’ and filter by that: https://trakt.tv/users/ohifriend/notes/ratings/added/asc?terms=PW.
