💬 New Trakt Feedback

It will not. No way they are going to support two versions that are so different for much longer. For example, the new Trakt has a rate system with 5 stars, while the classic Trakt has 10 hearts. I have a rating system where 1-4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 hearts are all very different from each other, and have a meaning to me (based on rewatchability and recommendation potential) so if I can’t give 3.5 or 4.5 stars, the new site is completely useless to me.

Yes, the rating system change is a big deal to me too. I checked a movie I rated 7 in Classic, and when I switch to Lite, it shows it as 4/5. I’ve got more than a decade of data using a 10 stars or 5 stars with 1/2 ratings. Making a major change like the degrees of precision makes it difficult to properly compare ratings before and after the change. I’d recommend anyone to take an export or backup of your Trakt data now to make sure you have a preserved copy of your data as it currently is.

Yeah the rating system is a big deal, a 7/10 is not the same as a 4/5. If they’re going forward with the 5 star system then at least give us half stars. There is no good way to convert a rating out of 10 to a rating out of 5. This change alone ruins years worth of ratings

I don’t like horizontal scrolling on websites. full stop. and I agree with everyone that going from 10 stars down to 5 with no option for half stars is a bad choice. There was nothing wrong with Trakt classic. I didn’t mind the cosmetic changes from a few years ago, because I actually prefer purple over red, but this new layout is not it. I don’t use the Trakt app, because I spent hours on the classic Trakt webpage when I first signed up logging all the thing’s I’ve watched over the years, I have gotten very very used to the Trakt Classic layout. I love the site how it is, the new Trakt is cluttered, messy, and makes it harder to find things. I spent a while looking for the word “History”, since that ‘s what it has always been called on Trakt Classic, only to feel dumb when I see it’s now “Recently Watched”. And that leads you to not a cleanly laid out page with each day’s plays separated by date, no, it’s one giant grid of tiny thumbnails with vague dates like “last Sunday”. That has to change.

I think people are being a little harsh now, but I appreciate this response. I don’t mind change. What I do mind is when features I used are taken away from me or dumbed down.

So long as classic is still an option as is, or the new trakt eventually has all features that are currently missing, then I’ll be happy.

That is something I think we can address in a future post and go into more details about the design system and the technical foundations I’m talking about in my messages.

It is not sufficient enough to replace the full Trakt experience. That is why we are not cutting anything away.

Yes, we want to have some fun while doing what we do :jack_o_lantern:
You are just picking one pull request out of thousands, ignoring the bugs and issues and core feature we are working on.

Justin is involved in everything we do. He just trusts his team to do their best work with what he (and Sean, who is also still very much involved) started. They are working on more core and infrastructure, under-the-hood stuff. That’s all.

Thanks for sharing some context and answering couple questions.

This is totally misleading. You are forcing new users / unlogged users to the new lite experience. It’s not like they had a choice.

Now try again with an option that says, 1) Do you want to use the simplified beta and trimmed/dumbed down version or 2) the full version with all the options and settings.

And who do you want to listen to, the new and clueless users, with your metrics or your users that are here and use trakt for years, even more than a decade for some of us ?!

Even with a scenario where you would eventually back port all the “features” & “options” & filtering and sorting possibilities to the “new” version, this new UI is completely crappy on the web on a desktop. There is nothing that will fix that user experience on a desktop. And the only perfect solution, already implemented that have all the two important things, with both a perfect UI and all the features, sorting, filtering etc… is the actual “classic” version.

Why are you trying to fix something that is working perfectly for your users? Rule number one in IT : If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It!

To be honest, this is like shooting yourself in the foot.

Switching to “new” app.trakt.tv needs me to consent to Cookies. On your Privay Policy page on Privacy Policy - Trakt , that is linked in the notice, you list Firebase in the Category Analytics. Analytics is not strictly necessary but I cannot opt out of it, I can only opt-in on everything.

You are currently violating GDPR requirements.

Honestly, I heavily dislike pretty much everything about LITE. If trakt will transition to it entirely I will leave trakt for good.

At least for me, the continuation of Trakt Classic is the most central question in all this, and I have the impression that we still do not have a clear answer due to what seem to be contradictory statements by you, Kevin. They might not be meant to be contradictory, but they definitely sound and therefore come across that way:

In the announcement post you wrote, that Trakt Classic would be

“available while we transition.”

Also, that you would

“keep Trakt Classic stable while the new experience matures.”

You ended the post with:

“Trakt Classic built the foundation

New Trakt is the future”.

The use of the word “while” and the dichotomy you made between Trakt Classic in the past tense and New Trakt as the future brings the point across, that Trakt Classic is here right now during an initial launch phase of New Trakt, until it is eventually cut off completely.

But then, today you say:

“It [New Trakt] is not sufficient enough to replace the full Trakt experience. That is why we are not cutting anything away.”

Surely, those are sentences, but what do they mean?! With those earlier statements you seemed to confirm that you are discontinuing Trakt Classic, now you say that no features of Trakt Classic will be cut. Does this mean every single feature of Trakt Classic will be availabe in New Trakt? Why start from scratch then? Or did you mean, that Trakt Classic itself is not going away?

I kindly ask you to answer this question:

Is there a plan to turn off Trakt Classic or do we keep Trakt Classic?

We know from experience from the subscriptions change, they won’t listen to our feedback and just carry on and do what they want.

@kcador

I’m going to re-ask this question seeing as you skipped over this. With the new version exactly how are we supposed to get to our library?

And I don’t seem to be able to access my Watch List either?

I’ve just cancelled my VIP membership as a result of this planned transition to a platform I don’t find useful for many of the reasons others have listed above. It’s unfortunate, but it is what it is considering this is the future of Trakt. I might resubscribe if “classic” is going to continue to be a long-term product that isn’t on the way out and still exists next summer when it nears my expiration date, but the way that it’s being discussed by the PM in this thread suggests it’s not going to be here in a years time.

There are so many comments on here, I will be surprised if mine gets traction, but here goes. (I will also be opening up specific topics on each to try to get answer on how to do it.)

I no longer believe power and flexibility are the goal, AND THAT IS TRAKT’s STRONG POINT. There are so many “easy to use” sites and they don’t meet my needs. You are giving up your niche. Filters, sorting, progress, etc. So much to love, so much gone.

Now, here is how I use it most and how each feature compares. These are ranked in the order of importance to me.

List Progress - CRITICAL

I maintain two different TV Show lists to see what I have not watched yet. One is for me alone, and one is for when I am watching TV with my wife. I have found no other tracking website that does this well. If you break this, I’m gone.

Progress on lists does not seem to exist or work anymore. I set Ignore Watched but it is showing every show anyway. Also the ability to sort by number of episodes left, time remaining, etc does not exist.

Continue watching is the closest thing, but it cannot filter by custom tags or lists to achieve multiple progress lists.

Again, if this goes away I GO AWAY. This is my number 1 use case.

Unwatched Movies - CRITICAL

The old watchlist is now Start Watching? Because I can’t get Favorites or Streaming filter to work. It just shows every movie. Filters seem to be hit and miss if they actually work.

This is basic functionality that has to work for everyone.

New Movies and TV Shows- HIGH

I use the calendar feature to find new movies and TV Show premiering each week. I filter by English language and has at least some IMDB ratings to minimize the noise.

This does not appear to exist at all yet.

Public Lists - MINIMAL

This at least seems to be working.

Summary

I listed all my use cases and you have broken every single one that is important to me.

I can’t believe you are making this the new default already. It is not complete and not ready. Every decision you have been making in the last couple of years has been making it worse and not better.

I stuck with you through the price increase and stability issues because in the end you provided a product I use. This new site is not a product I can use.

I think those quotes form the OP are the honest and realistic progression of things –> classic will be dropped at some point. Keeping it around makes no sense. the goal was clearly to unify the fronted across experiences. They already lied about the scope of “LITE” before, any backtracking on this will 100% turn out another lie again. this is sadly an established pattern now.

All I can repeat is that the LITE site is unusable to me. I’ve reported as much a long time ago and your devs took no interest in fixing it - so yes, even a silly change like this is 100% wasted resources to me. I’m not just talking usability but crashing multiple browsers when testing. And even if it manages to finish it’s backend calls and caching (?), it will return to it’s sorry state when coming back later again.

Justin actually spent a lot of time optimizing the site and accommodating for large data sets - it might be a curse but it also helped improve the site overall (ie. encoded/compressed locally stored data). All of that work and know-how is seemingly absent now as it’s been reworked to leverage the API only.

Edit:

Other people have said it more concise and written out than I could do on my phone.

So in short, if the new app is forced on all users without every single feature present on classic, I’ll be forced to cancel my subscription.

A 100% increase in price followed by a decrease in features and quality is unacceptable.

I don’t understand how it could be that hard to let us toggle visible info or elements on or off in trakt classic and call it a day. What’s this obsession companies have with making apps like they were made by Netflix for android tv.

Hi, the ratings not being converted with half stars was a bug and that has been fixed now.
Please check and see if that is working as expected now.

I checked, and the movie I rated as 7 does show as 3.5 in Lite now. Thank you, that alleviates one of my major concerns.

Yet another developer rolling out a half baked app.

I could not add anything to any list other than the watch list for the first day.

I can’t click into a movie or series and see my watch history. I have to either scroll through the decade of watch history or go onto the website defeating the purpose of the app.

Something as basic a rating is held off the initial launch, which forces me to head to the website or exit the beta group to rate something at the moment.

This might be a fresh design but it’s a dated one. The app still looks cluttered. Horizantal scrolling is the vein of my internet existence and it pains me that you are just rolling it out.

I like covers and you have now taking the focus away to provide me with a mostly blank box. This is what I call a waste of space. And no I don’t want to have more information there. I prefer the older layout with the rating, watching, list, and collected without having to go into the movie or show.

Can’t click on a 3 dot menu on a item as the menu crashes and says uh oh… this wasn’t planned from within my list.

Want to share your collecting with a friend while in person who does not want to use this service? Nah go on the website to do that.

All the customization were removed and should be brought back. I don’t care for what you think I should have as my main menu options. We all use the app differently.

List are no longer in the order I set them up to be.

The only use I can see for this current beta is to find something to watch that are not released or a popular. Something I can do for free anywhere.

As Captain Falcon once said, “Do better”

All this sounds fair and reasonable enough. And it would be something to look forward to.

The only problem is trust. Trakt in general has destroyed so much trust and confidence in the past year, I simply can’t see how I should blindly believe the promise that existing essential features won’t be substantially downgraded. Or even completely vanish.

After all we must loudly protest to see even the most basic standards upheld, like that rating should use a x/10 system and not x/5 or even a thumbs up or down system.

If something so basic is in jeopardy, why and how should I be certain that you understand and respect even more complex and essential features and designs?

The last app had its use despite being an immense downgrade in functionality, compared to the desktop experience. It’s simply unexplainable to me why you guys chose to replace that less functional app, by this lite version that it is even less functional in every aspect. The immediate impression is that Trakt apps are only about one thing: Constant feature erosion.

It was so so so unwise to enforce this barebone project onto everyone. People are right when they classify the lite app as pre beta. It might be stable but to me it’s not more useful than a UI projection.

Hello on my side I notice 2 regressions:

  1. Mobile app for the Up next section is slow to load
  2. There is a diff between up next section between old version and new version.

Thanks in advance.
