Why can’t I just use my password?
I mean, it’s not banking or anything sensitive, so there should be an option for this enhanced security

Agreed getting tired of having to go to my email. Then there’s the ppl who have aol or yahoo emails that were not receiving the email, so they couldn’t login.

Would be very slightly less obnoxious if I could at least link an Apple or Google account to my existing profile.
Seems that an email code is now, and forever, the only option for me. And I keep getting signed out at least once a week on every device (phone/tablet/laptop/PC)

Just adding my voice to this. Having to get an email link literally every other time I try to access the site is incredibly annoying. It would be fine if it retained the log in for longer (e.g. don’t ask me again for 30 days) but right now it’s a major inconvenience.
I agree. I don’t ever use those sign in with Google or Apple options. Never have, never will. Let me use the password I have set or implement passkeys.
Also agree with the comment above about getting signed out on the web after a couple days. Why?
I agree. Just let us use our passwords and stay logged in for at least a week.
do you clear your browser cache or cookies often? i stay logged in for months at a time. only recently did it log me out unexpectedly
I stayed logged in, it now has kicked me out and the mail option creates a new account even if the mail is the only one I have received any trakt emails (tried all my mails - they all create new acc), so now I can’t even log into my acc… (browser still has acc+pass saved …)
The site has logged me out every few days since the update to V3. It is a pain in the butt to get back in. It used to keep me logged in for months as long as I went on the site regularly–at least once per week. One of the many issues I have with the new version.
It feels like a constant reminder of how much you care about the user experience. not even passkeys at least. i keep getting signed out on firefox and i never clear cookies.

Another vote for a passkey if you must move on from passwords.
Same here, V2 would keep me logged in for ages but V3 (especially since V2 got killed off for good) won’t consistently remember my login.
Again… wouldn’t be as annoying if we had the old credential-based login system!
It’s terrible UX, adding extra steps to do the same function.
Before it was:
- Type email address
- Type password
- Press Enter/click Submit
- Trakt away
If you use 1Password/LastPass/Password manager, then you don’t even need steps 1 and 2
Now
If using code:
- Enter email address
- Press “email link”
- Log in to email/switch to email tab
- Press refresh (if email isn’t there)
- Open email
- Copy the code
- Switch back to the tab you were in
- Paste
- Press Enter/Submit
- Trakt away
If using “magic” link
- Enter email address
- Press “email link”
- Log in to email/switch to email tab
- Press refresh (if email isn’t there)
- Open email
- Click the link
- Tab opens with Track
- Switch back to the tab you were on
- Close the tab
- Switch back to the tab the email sent you to
- Trakt away
If you’re pro “magic” link, then it should be OPTIONAL
Please allow for both password or email magic-link! I don’t know the proportion of people on Trakt using password managers, but with one email magic-link is really a chore. Don’t remove the password ;-;
Maybe TOTP 2fa or email magic-link if people want more security ?
Passkeys (though I don’t like them for other reasons) are less inconvenient than email links/codes.
Still, we had perfect credential-based login. I think the real reason is Trakt doesn’t want to be responsible for storing passwords any more—which, y’know, fair with all the hackers out there looking for databases to steal. But it still sucks to go backwards in UX on logins too, on top of everything else in v3
There was a long old thread about this issue (https://forums.trakt.tv/t/please-dont-force-us-to-log-in-using-apple-google-or-magic-links/44569) but it seems to have been deleted for some reason.
Based on what I remember from that deleted thread, the username/password system is not coming back. But support for passkeys is in progress according to the roadmap. That will make signing in much more convenient for us with password managers.
The email based solution has UX issues, as clearly described by @theanishmistry in this comment.
If someone gets access to my email account, they can sign in to every service that uses email codes/magic links.
You should not have to rely on another system to be able to sign in to the service. The email with the sign in code/magic link might fail to be generated or fail to be sent from Trakt, and even if it is sent, there’s no guarantee that it will be delivered to my inbox. Or my email provider might have some issues, causing downtime in their service and stopping me from even accessing my email.
The only fallback right now is to use an Apple or Google account, which not everybody have, or want to have, or don’t want to use for the purpose of signing in to Trakt.
Luckily, as I mentioned in my other reply, support for passkeys is on the way, so this should hopefully not be an issue for much longer.
