Private Notes to Self

I know that as a VIP member I can “Add notes to any list item” but I haven’t found a way to do so on the iOS app. Is this feature missing there?

Also I’d find it more useful if it didn’t need to live in a list so I can write notes to myself for any movie or TV show.

What happens to the notes when I move items with the note out of lists? If they are removed, would the only solution at the moment be to add every item I want to add notes to, to some master list?

Can others see my notes if they collaborate on a list with me?

Another workaround I’ve found is to write Apple Quick Notes that then surface when I navigate to a movie or show in the Trakt App.

How do you all keep notes?

Yup, you cannot add notes in the iOS app.
@Ohifriend, is this something you could consider for a future release?

What I personally do is adding my notes on the web and then seeing them in the app (this part is already implemented). Never needed to add notes specifically on a title level, so for me Trakt’s implementation is enough. Enhancing the iOS app with the ability to create / edit list notes would be very nice tho.

I really need it to work on the phone so I can as notes while watching or while out with friends. This is why I’ve been using Apple‘a Quick Notes for now but I’d prefer it backed into Trakt

These are some interesting points - I don’t have any specific answers right now but I’ve made a note about this. Ideally at the very least we’ll be able to support adding notes to list items from within the app.

I definitely support adding note creation to the iOS app! The create note button on the website, in manage list, is tiny and dangerously adjacent to the delete item button (obviously designed for mouse clicking, but I use Safari on my iPad with my finger).

I’d also ask that the character limit on notes be increased. My idea to add 2023 Emmy nominations to a note failed miserably when trying to list everything for Succession (24 noms!).

And finally, I have to wonder why, on the web, the note functionality is a part of manage list, and not in the show/movie page item itself? It is after all an item attribute, not a list attribute…

Thanks!

We limit it for UI considerations mostly. How many characters are you requesting?

It’s attached to the list item. If the same item is on multiple lists, each one separate notes. We have a separate feature request for item level notes that we are considering.

Great right NOW it seems to be working only on webpage. And from iOS in Rippple

Sorry Justin that I’m just now replying to your reply…

I discovered that you created a topic dedicated to Notes, and you addressed the character limit there. I agree 500 characters is a lot for a tooltip. Maybe a tooltip isn’t the best UI element for a long Note?

And about my comment that a note should be an item attribute, not a list attribute: As I’ve become a more experienced Trakt user, I definitely see now that list notes have a completely separate function than item notes (which I believe you are now implementing). After all, I don’t want my Emmy nomination notes to follow their shows on to other lists, including the Emmy nominations list for next year!

I’m looking forward to having the ability to add notes in the iOS app, and for long notes to be fully displayed there.

Thanks!

Yes, that’s exactly why they are different. The same item can appear on multiple lists, so have a unique note on each list item is really useful. The more global “media item notes” will display as well, with the icon in the top left of the poster. So it can be quite powerful combining both types of notes when viewing a list.

We’re working on this and hope to have an update out before the end of the year.

I, also, find notes and private notes confusing. I’m a binger and have lists for “start dates” (returning series) and “end dates” (4 to 10 episode streamer series) so I can binge watch. I want to add a note to each series icon with dates visible on series icon regardless of how I got to the icon

It sounds like you should use notes on the actual show itself, you can do that by going to the main show page and clicking “add private notes”. That will carry the note through the entire Trakt website as a little icon in the top left of the poster.

Build 1.14 (556) of the iOS allows adding and editing notes.
