šŸ“¢ Public Feedback Board and Roadmap

Oh I see, I mostly use the app which is missing a lot of important features. Don’t think it’s there on the app, if it is I can’t see it

No problem

We’re committed to being more transparent where we can, but there are limits to what we can share publicly.

I want to acknowledge (again) the frustration and distrust that some of you are expressing. We clearly have work to do to rebuild that trust. It will be done with time, by showing you what we build and why we build it. Not by opening our books or our internal planning.

We didn’t communicate it. And it is currently only available on the main website (not in the apps). More on this below but the short answer is that we choose what we communicate and sometimes we will miss.

  • You only see part of the votes because some users are ā€œdownvotingā€ things (saying ā€œnot interestedā€ in a feature)
  • You don’t see the new feature ideas in the public roadmap
  • We also merge feedback from the forum and the ones on the public roadmap

→ I’ve already answered this above in the thread, but to be clear, I would love to have only one place that combines public and private feedback, with the best voting system, that auto-links to features and end up in our roadmap. Currently, this doesn’t exist, so, I’m trying to get the best of both word with some extra work my side.

Please look at the Roundup post. There are changelog for almost everything we do. Sometimes we won’t say something because we don’t want to over-communicate on the small things. Something like adding a link to our footer or a database migration won’t always be communicated.

Sorry about that! I try to chime in when I feel I can add value to the conversation.

I’m okay with criticism, and I understand we won’t always agree. That’s normal in any community. But sometimes, I choose not to reply if I feel that engaging won’t help move things forward or lead to a constructive outcome. It’s not about ignoring anyone, it’s about being thoughtful with responses.

Your internal planning and a general timeline of features should not be a limit. It’s what a roadmap is.

The Trakt team has repeatedly been saying to trust them but it is not sufficient. You need to do more to show your commitment and accountability. You are not only failing at that, you’re actively defending your decisions to not communicate.

Stop trying to choose because your track record on this is really bad. Just communicate.

The post with 4 features in different categories? Plex and search is in preview, Trakt Lite and Apple TV is in Now in Theaters.

It does not show what moved in other categories.

So you acknowledge the frustration and distrust that some we have and that you clearly have work to do to rebuild that trust but you still have the capacity to be worried about over-communication?

As I said, your track record on communication is really bad. This should not be a worry for you guys to have.

They are probably trying to re-define roadmap like they tried ti re-define what grandfathering is.

Don’t really agree. the current ā€œroadmapā€ is vague to say the least with cinematic themes that tell us nothing. No timeline

This is a roadmap https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/gosupermodel/images/2/27/GSm_Roadmap.jpeg/revision/latest?cb=20230518194625&path-prefix=de

And this too, even though a bit more vague

//edit months later or something. But I thought the user above said ā€œyou are probably trying to redefine roadmapā€ :joy::joy::joy::joy:

Any update on privacy control options or multiple profiles? Been waiting months for these to reach production status, but the road map doesn’t seem to be changing any.

@kcador??? My VIP runs out today, so want to know if I should bother renewing. One of the two I mentioned are the only ā€œupcomingā€ things I’d be interested in, but if there’s no move on them I’ll not bother with VIP. The road map doesn’t seem to have changed since the mad scramble to prove that such a hike rise in price is worth it, so it looks like it is all a bit of a white wash.

I take it the road map is no longer important then, since there’s no reply. Was it only added to pacify everyone angry about the price hikes and is now thrown by the wayside? Disappointing that nothing seems to have changed with it since it was created. I guess that means I’ve become one of the many now no longer VIP

I also love roadmaps, but this one seems to have been thrown together just for the sake of having one. The most confusing thing for me, though, is that it’s like zero interactive — it seems like everything thrown at it just disappears. Not even comments or anything.

Or the very convenient URL https://portal.productboard.com/3t7hfk3j4apuzglqfebmddaf\ - lovely! So, I will not be renewing my VIP either.

A simple request for update on one of the features in the roadmap isn’t even enough to warrant communication.

As I told you, stop trying to pick and choose when to communicate. You guys simply don’t have that luxury anymore. You lost it. Obviously I’m not telling you to just tell us literally everything, but when someone asks for an update you should respond.

To be fair the URL when you click on the bottom of trakt is roadmap.trakt.tv

The main post should have been updated.

Kevin was out of office at the end of last week so I believe he’ll respond some time this week if necessary once he’s caught up.

But to answer what I can, the status of the two features @Cinhd was requesting haven’t changed currently, and the rest of the items are as is too. Some of the current items we’re working on are larger than others but set the foundation for continuing to add more of the features in the future - specifically the unified experience.

I’ve also updated the main post with the new link, thanks.

Surely Kevin isn’t the only one to be able to fully answer questions on the road map?

I remember reading that Justin said proper privacy settings would be added ā€œsoonā€. I guess soon is any time from now until never .

The fact that nothing has changed since the massive price hike, when all these ā€œnew featuresā€ were touted as one of the reasons for the hike, is a big let down. I was willing to get another year of VIP if things were actually happening with them, but I’m now one of those that are a drain on the system because I’m unwilling to throw that kind of money at something that isn’t showing progress . Perhaps, in time, I’ll pick up VIP again (on all three accounts our household has that I paid for), but only once there is some proper progress on all the features we’d like, but for now it’s a no.

Hey all,

Sorry, I was a bit on and off in August :sun:

  • Not trying to redefine anything. A roadmap is a high-level, visual, strategic document that outlines our product vision, direction, and planned evolution over time. I said it above in this thread, it will probably never have dates because it is outcome-driven, not output-driven. We already changed the names of some categories and I gave more context for some of them above to make things clearer.
  • I think I said it somewhere in the AMA thread: I’m not a salesman. I’m not trying to sell you anything. I’m just trying to add value to a product and a community I love. If you don’t feel like you’re getting the value we are asking you to pay for right now, that’s okay. You can already achieve a lot with the free tier and there’s competition in the market.
  • You won’t see progress on the public feedback and roadmap board as much as you can see it in the product and in our announcements and the product roundup. We’ve progressed on a lot of things this past months: the brand new Android TV app (currently in beta), the iOS app is getting a lot of love, the official Plex sync, we’ve improved search and recommendations who are core features of Trakt’s offering, we are progressing on bringing the feature parity between the web and all official apps, and so much more.

To give you a better idea regarding the two features you were asking for:

  • More Control Over What You Share is something we have talked about internally already and will be worked on actively after we release some other features that have a higher priority right now.
  • Multiple Profiles is something that will take more time to get to. It is in the far-end part of the roadmap for this reason.

Kevin

So there’s been a teeny bit of progress on four things (all still just beta), collection renamed library, but nothing new to speak of. Surely privacy should be a priority and actively worked on now before adding ā€œfeaturesā€ that might complicate the process back end? It’s been asked for many times over the years. A competitor has this implemented already and it’s great having so much control over our own data. I have one account there with complete control as opposed to needing two accounts here to do the same thing, which is ridiculously expensive now to keep paying for. If and when this actually gets implemented I’ll consider VIP again, but for now I feel safer and more listened to elsewhere.

I still think being able to see the feedback on the road map, or at least popularity percentages would give people a good indication if features have a chance of making it out of just ā€œunder considerationā€ (aka probably never happen in the next few years) to the ā€œin productionā€ section.

I appreciate you getting back to us, though, even if it’s not very helpful

Multiple Profiles is the feature I’m most interested in and would actually be worth something… but that’s just me.

  • It’s actually more interesting than pretty much everything else

Glad to know that it’s something you are actually looking into it as opposed to it just being something NICE TO HAVE

This is pretty laughable. We are three months on from the price hike, when you promised to embed new features, but nothing on the roadmap is moving and Trakt is unwilling to commit publicly to any expected timeframes or priorities. You basically said ā€œRenew VIP at a double (or more) price and we promise to put these things in and show you value for money that justifies itā€. You have obviously not learned from your failings on communication, innovation and transparency.

Oh my god what is this please spare us the MBA language.

Ah I see you haven’t redefined anything but you chose a specific definition.

This doesn’t even change anything. Being outcome driven doesn’t completely eliminate the when. Again, the timeframes don’t need to be hyper specific.

We’re not treating you like a salesman. We are treating you like an employee of Trakt.

It has been almost 3 months (I’m right this time!) since this roadmap came out and the feedback you are getting is that it’s not that helpful or informative. You say you are trying to add value but you are doubling and tripling down against feedback.

Not sure we promised anything like that. The price increase was first to cover our infrastructure (servers) costs. Then to cover the team and thus our product development costs.

That’s just not true.

You have insights on the priorities in the public roadmap. Expected timeframe can be inferred from the priorities. You don’t have all the information like our internal strategy or the telemetry data we have but you can make your assumptions.

This is not basically what we said, it is your interpretation and maybe a shortcut of what we said.

Sorry you feel that way.

In the context of my reply: we are not redefining anything, I merely wanted to make sure we had a common understanding of what a roadmap is.

Date-less roadmaps is a thing. I’m choosing to use the tools I have at my disposal and use them to their fullest potential.

You should be able to have an idea of the when based on the roadmap and our release notes/cadence.

Why not as a Product Manager? Or as someone who is trying to make Trakt better?

And I’m hearing it and answering the best I can with what I have right now. I value your feedback on the features (I want more) and I value your feedback one what can be improved, your frustrations. I’m just not going to say ā€œyesā€ to everything (sometimes it’s even not my call) but I try to always say why (yes or no).

When you announce new features without any timeframe, it feels meaningless. It’s like me saying, ā€œOne day I want to learn the pianoā€ sure, it might happen this month, next year, or maybe never. Without clear goals or deadlines, a roadmap loses its purpose.

Right now, it looks less like a plan and more like something created just to justify the price hike. Three months have passed what’s actually changed? What concrete progress has been made in that time?

To make matters worse, I see that people who canceled their VIP subscriptions are now being offered a discounted renewal at the old price. Meanwhile the people that didn’t cancel because the lack of communication from your side pay the full price. Weird…

This whole situation has caused significant damage. Promises have been made and are broken. I haven’t seen Justin respond on those even once. The most frustrating thing in all of this is the lack of accountability.
