I’ve been using Trakt for ages and a VIP for 7 years now and never really had a cause to make a big complaint, the odd comment sure, but nothing harsh that I can remember (please don’t find me wrong ) but I’m afraid I need to say something because this is driving me nuts.
The search function is just useless (sorry, but it is).
A simple search, “ABBA” (without the quotes) brings up pages and pages (I stopped counting at 20) and most of these do not even have the word “ABBA” in the title.
The first 4 are ABBA, after that anything goes, yet I find more ABBA on pages 2 and 3 (I stopped looking after that).
Surely the search should list all “ABBA” FIRST and then anything that includes “ABBA”, in the title after that, but there are things like " Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" WHERE is the word “ABBA” in THAT?
This really needs to be sorted or this function is just unusable unless you have the time to spend to go through every page listed in the hope the item you are searching for ends up appearing several pages in.
Search needs work! Another issue with it is there being no titles. They show up if the result has no poster, it would be preferable for this to be added to those with as well. At the very least it should be added a mouse tag when you hover over a result. I am not a fan of reading poster titles while searching for something, some are I suppose. Fine, then add a selector switch with the list view we get in the app’s search. Yes! the app has titles. However I’d prefer the browser poster view if titles were added browse results quicker than scrolling a list.
Take a look here for further evidence of why titles must exist…
One has no title even on the poster, two have difficult to read vertical titles, two have the titles blocked by year & category tags. Then two look great because they have titles! but they only exist because they have no poster.
It does an exact match first, then a fuzzy search after that. It looks like all those titles include “abba” in the title to me. Probably hard to tell since the posters have titles in there native language, but the English translation includes “abba”.
I wouldn’t focus on the number of results, that is a side effect of fuzzy searching. Before we started fuzzy matching, the results were much less accurate since any misspelled title or missing characters would return basically no results. I’m not saying it’s perfect, but I think people might forget the limitations of the previous search results.
I think you missed my point.
You say it does an exact match first, that may be the case but it doesn’t publish those results first, today it brings up 2 first (oddly not the 4 first as the other day) and then fuzzy matches.
If I did not know any better then there are 2 results for ABBA and I would think that is all that is on Trakt.
But then there are other titles that start ABBA pages in to the search after these fuzzy matches.
3rd result is Father (no ABBA there)
4th result is Abbas in Flower (granted starts with the letters abba and then s) so for me that is the end of the titles that start ABBA, BUT it is not.
On page 2
40th result is ABBA: The Movie
46th result is ABBA: The Winner Takes It All - The ABBA Story
47th result is ABBA: In Concert
and there are 10+ other results that start ABBA and these appear AFTER results that include the letters ABBA somewhere in the title (a fuzzy search as I understand them to be)
The search results SHOULD bring up ALL results for the letters ABBA that appear first in the title and then any fuzzy matches (titles that include the letters abba somewhere in the title) after that, which would be fine and what I would expect.
There is no consistency in this website in terms of how it displays the show/movie.
Search with default account settings (poster) won’t show the title. Doesn’t even show when hovered.
Shows and movies trending/popular/etc pages always shows the title.
Discover doesn’t show the title, but shows it when hovering the poster.
Dashboard watch list and recommendation panels show title text and a title when hovered.
At the very least, search should show the title on hover like it does elsewhere.
Or just allow us to always show the title for any of the display settings.
the search is terrible with punctuation marks. I saw something in the changelog hoping it would be fixed but apparently not (some uses cases have been improved though so we getting there).
I will add the tooltip on search poster layout in this week’s website update. I’d also suggest checking out the other search layouts since many include the title on the image itself.
Thanks for adding, but even after having seen it in the changelog I had to look really closely to even notice it. Maybe this can be improved? bolder text? colored background? different placement?
I actually hasn’t noticed a major difference with the results produced from the new search, but now that I’m reading these comments I definitely see it…
