Suppress comments before release date

I couldn’t care less about people writing useless things like “Without even seeing this just gonna say here we go again”. I don’t care what people who haven’t seen the film think. It’s incredibly unhelpful. I use comments as a key way to figure out if something is worth watching or not (i also find the ai summaries really helpful).

Please please please can I have a way to suppress all comments that are posted before the release day of something?

I just opened Predator Badlands to see what people were thinking of it to decide if I want to go to the cinema this weekend. These are the top two comments:

In what world is that useful information for me to get an idea of what people think of the film? They’re utterly useless and I don’t want to see them if they’re posted before the release date.

I also just opened Pluribus which is apparently the top of shows on Trakt at the moment and this is the first comment I see:

This is, again, an unhelpful comment for me to have to go and see when trying to tell if I want to watch something.

I use comments as a way to get more of an idea of whether I’ll enjoy watching something. That is not possible when the top comments I see are people who haven’t watched something posting unhelpful nonsense.

Yes, I know that there will be edge cases that will mean sometimes a couple of comments that are from people who actually watched it will be suppressed, but you could use ratings and watched status as a counter mechanism to the release date check.

Sorry, it’s a rather passionate post. It’s just that this constantly annoys me when I look at stuff that’s new out

Totally agree but would observe that the last one you mentioned for Pluribus, actually seems to come from someone as frustrated as you are with the comments. And it’s the first one because it has so many likes and agreements. In other words, there are an 76 folks there agreeing with you that these comments shouldn’t be there.

I’m sure though the answer will be we should report the comment. The simpler thing would be imho for Trakt to block comments before the release date completely. There’s nothing that needs to be said before something is released.

No. Just like adding stuff as watched cant be blocked.

Theres lots of stuff I watched before the release date on trakt. Pre premieres are a thing and it’s nothing elite.

Here the cinema shows popular movies often in the week of the premiere (thursday is premiere day in the Netherlands) before it actually premiers. And it often doesnt match the US/Trakt release date.

For what it’s worth, I’m not suggesting to block commenting before the release date, or permanently hide them, or hide them for everyone by default.

I would just like a way to filter comments at the end of the day.

The following are the criteria that I would like to be able to use to filter comments (by default, configured in my settings):

  • Posted after release date.
  • OR Posted before release date AND user marked as watched.
  • OR Posted before release date AND user gave a rating.

Why not just block the user?

Because they might post reviews for other stuff they’ve watched. One instance of it doesn’t mean they will for every comment they leave.

I guess my point is that this is not necessarily a problem with comments before release but a problem with what a specific person wrote. Because of that, it’s likely they would post useless stuff even after release which blocking them would solve.

If someone has not marked something as watched or applied a rating, there is 95% chance their comment before the release date is not providing any substantive value about the piece of media. Which is why I would like the ability to filter those comments out for myself. Blocking is a nuclear no-return option. Ability to filter is a much better option.
