TMDB’s handling of anime seasons is becoming an issue since they classify seasons that don’t reset episode numbers as a single continuous season.
I asked a moderator, “Would One Piece be considered one continuous giant season, given that episode 1122 is still counted from the original release?” and received the following response: “As indicated in the content reports for that series, it should be merged by the administrator into a single season.”
The longer Trakt relies on TMDB, the more often I’ll see seasons being incorrectly classified.
I know this topic has been brought up many times before, but I wanted to know if Trakt has made an official statement on the matter.
I’ve been a VIP member for the past three years, and this issue is really starting to bother me to the point where I might look elsewhere for a better way to track my progress.
One Piece being in one season I can totally get behind though. Those arc splits are arbitrary at best.
So bad example
It’s just that it’s all taking Such A Long Time . adding everything to a master list. Thats been the thing for years. Just run that script already to “fix” stuff. Instead of waiting and waiting and waiting.
Completely agree. They have horrible rules and horrible moderators that stick to the rules like their mother’s life depends on it.
One solution I use is alternate orders. It’s only available on web browser (something as important should also logically be available on mobile, no?), but it’s the most optimal solution we have for now. Nearly all anime on TMDB have alternate orders that actually have seasons (if not, you can add it).
I chose One Piece specifically because the official Japanese source divides the anime into story arcs. The rest of my conversation with the mod was about how TMDB conflicts with the official publisher’s structure and I was wondering why the source of truth not always the same.
Totally agree, that’s why I said it’s the best solution we have for now. And I don’t mind my history saying I watched 1x41, as long as it helps me keep track of the order in which I’m watching. It’s not that deep.
I have been hoping for years for the splitting of anime from the rest.
Anime are not normal TV series, they follow other logics, they are numbered differently, they must have a separate database and a different management inside Trakt (as for example Simkl does).
This is why I have been using AniList in parallel with Trakt for years.
There’s unfortunately no “correct” numbering/grouping for all TV series but TMDB has to pick some baseline. This can be frustrating and I’ve been there. Hopefully, the situation with episode groups can be improved in the long term.
I’ve also found TMDB to be generally reasonable and open to feedback. There was the rule that episodes containing individual story segments have to be split (which e.g. was an issue on the new Urusei Yatsura) but they’ve since changed that rule.
As I understand it, the current rule is to go with what the official homepage of the anime is doing. This isn’t perfect but I think makes sense.
In the case of One Piece, the official homepage does have arcs as categories but continually number episodes without any clear separation of arcs. It does make sense to me to have a single season and put the arcs into episode groups.
Another example is My Happy Marriage. While Netflix resets the numbering with the second season, the official homepage, and I think the Japanese broadcast in general, continues the numbering. There’s no way for TMDB to do the numbering in this case that will be correct for all users. My Happy Marriage also doesn’t show episode groups, so I’m not sure if it’s something that needs to be enabled manually by Trakt.
I do hope that TMDB and Trakt can improve the UX with episode groups. Ideally, you’d be able to pick a grouping per series, to choose the one that matches the way you watch, but I suspect that’s challenging to implement.
If there’s no episode group information added to TMDb, it can’t be shown on Trakt.
I checked the page on TMDb, and episode groups were added I think january this year. The show has been updated today, and episode groups are here.
I have argued with them and TVDB over how they handle red vs blue. Long story short they both will not follow what is clearly been listed as the official release and made up their own ways of displaying stuff. I hate them both equally.
