Tvdb changes to a subscribe model

TVDB has been surprisingly flexible with what they accept. Much more so than TMDB at least.

I agree! I have always wondered why TMDB is like that.

I’m curious what’s going to happen with shows like American Idol and Whose Line is It Anyway, who came back years later on a different network. Before, I had been tracking them both as single shows, with the revivals counting as later seasons of the same show. I’ve noticed TMDB counts them as two different shows, and that’s already affecting the app I use, SeriesGuide, so I’m wondering whether I should move to the other listing and modify my watches to match those, or whether the old way will still be supported somehow.

The same issue goes for Will & Grace… the revival is a separate show on TMDB but one on TVDB.

Well, that’s quite surprising. I wanted to ask @justin what the latest steps would be for the transition with the v3 API closing at the end of March but that is no longer necessary now that the v3 API can be used longer.

To follow op on Justin’s post from February 12: About 11,900 shows have been migrated
(+2900 since Feb 12) which is really nice and some of the most popular shows have been transferred to TMDB.
However, there are now around 10,500 (+3500) partial matches. The amount of currently airing shows is still around 18,000 and the amount of ended shows is still at 56,000.

With more time to migrate shows over, I was wondering how the ‘season locking’ would work. Do we have to use the support site and report which seasons need to be locked or is this something we can do ourselves?
Also, how will the datasource button look like with both TVDB and TMDB data? The screenshot below is from Rick & Morty with the only difference being the specials. Will the datasource button say: TVDB (specials) and TMDB (S1, S2, S3, S4) or simply TVDB and TMDB without specifying what data comes from which source?

Is anyone else seeing duplicates like this?

@JBaby_9783 that show has been fixed now

Thank you!!!

Why are shows that are not complete on tmdb being transferred over?

This show says it has been transfered to tmdb, but the data on tmdb is out of date and has no episodes for this year

I thought transfering over was only done if a 100% between tvdb & tmdb

Hm, there are 213 special episodes on trakt, TVDB also has 213 episodes.

I’m a little afraid that all my watched history for Running Man will be gone (https://trakt.tv/shows/running-man). I see for this show that you can’t click on TMDB comparison because it already uses TMDB. But the total count is now double because on TMDB everything is put in one season, on TVDB for each year a season is created. Both ways are now in Trakt. I suppose later TVDB way will be removed (each year as a season). How will this be transferred? I’m afraid that also for other (not so mainstream) shows things like watched history will disappear with these transfers.

This is a well known issue in TMDB. Maybe Trakt could use the episode groups?

Sadly, I liked TVDB better. It seems to be a larger community, so less popular shows get updated more often. I find with more than a few shows, I am now left to update them myself, which really degrades the website for me (as I used the “calendar” a lot to plan my “watching”).

I understand WHY the move was needed, I’m just sharing my feedback. As an aside, are imports “stuck”? I asked for a refresh on a show many hours ago and it still hasn’t refreshed.

Quite agree with you. I went on and added Gold Rush: Parker’s Trail because it wasn’t on there.
Banana, a MOD, decided to delete it all and add it to Gold Rush the main show. No amount of discussion would shift him from saying it wasn’t a separate show :face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth:
As too the refresh, I’m still waiting for one from 26th March
Definitely a step backwards to TMDB.

@TehJonny glad I’m not the only one that thinks Parker’s Trail is a separate show.
An ideal reason why I too think Trakt should do their own database, I’m sure there are enough people willing to keep this up to date.
Since switching to TMDB the updating of shows is incredibly slow to add new episodes, another positive to having their own database.

I saw the discussion too. And I totally agree with the mods tbh.

But hey, at least it’s there, so you can log it!

I am pretty sure that implementing episode groups in some way has been discussed before, as I do see that Parker’s Trail is set as an episode group on TMDB. Also if it was correct on TVDB and it was not allowed to be changed on TMDB I am sure that it could be locked on Trakt.

There’s one thing worse then no content: duplicated content :see_no_evil:

That is why I said…

Emphasis on if. :speak_no_evil:

All episodes with more than a few hundreds interactions will not auto-delete. This is a complaint of other users, but it is to make sure that any shows with any major interactions is not auto-deleted. We don’t want to delete views data without thought. This means duplicates often happen and have to be manually removed with a ticket at https://support.trakt.tv/. Most episodes are manually deleted and the interactions are reviewed on a show to show basis.

There was a bug and many shows were getting duplicated or merged before they were ready. So right now, you’re seeing the reminants of that bug. When you come across these, open a ticket so we can fix them.

Same goes for a show that’s ready to transition. I appreciate you all want to be able to help us, but in order to make sure that users’ interactions and data loss is minimal, we’re keeping the reins tight on who can migrate shows. So please continue to open a support ticket with links for shows that are ready to transition.

Some definitely do get stuck. Please open a support ticket with a link to the show for us to investigate.
