I looked at the waybackmachine and I found Marius in October 2024 with the title “Advisor”.
Was it your advice to do this Marius?
Yeah, we quadrupled your price but we PROMISE that we will make it worth it. Just like we promised that your price would not be affected by the changes.
No, fool me once and shame on you. Fool me twice and shame on me.
It’s not about the money, it’s about the principle.
Balances things for my pocket, and hopefully it’ll help someone in crisis.
I doubt it would be any ONE person. Sounds like Justin isnt a majority owner anymore.
You are as much a cheapskate as the people you accuse of. In fact, more considering how fast it took for you to walk back on your words.
Imagine being the guy who berates people for not paying for VIP at $60 and the moment he has to pay $60, he goes out running.
I’m done with you as well. Talk to me when you have the money to put where your mouth is.
Following industry trends, I have a feeling that most (if not all) of the promised new stuff will revolve around AI and end up being just as bad as everywhere else. MBAs love chasing stupid trends.
Sad to see Trakt not being like Justin’s little baby anymore. (And Sean’s!)
I’d totally suggest make a 60 dollar tier for the recourse heavy streaming scrobblers. And keep the fun little side features like notes that aren’t like extravagant features in the 30 dollar tier. Even if my 15 dollar OG tier wouldn’t be respected I wouldn’t be that mad. But to force the new price for fancy auto scrobble stuff that only people who don’t like to be in control of their data use… yeah no bueno.
Even dark mode was a fun vip feature that didn’t really matter. You could make your own dark mode with user scripts/styles.
I don’t like how this person just “appears” and says that @justin voted against it…yet Justin has been silent all week. Sean and Justin are co-founders so they should have ALL the power/say so unless this came as a decision in a much deeper situation than we are aware of.
Did Justin and Sean sell enough of the company (to investors or the like) so now they have lost decision making? Is this another Apple type situation where the so called founder(s) somehow lost control?
Just a weird situation all around, and all so sudden.
@marius, this doesn’t even make sense.
How many users asked for this (if at all)? There already are tens of apps much better than Trakts own one.
I can’t imagine such app being used on a TV at all. No one in the right mind would keep switching between apps after every movie or episode watched just to mark it or to see what’s next - media centers handle that already.
And most media centers also have integration already via plugins.
You’re literally making up useless features, or such which already exist, and presenting them as something useful.
Lots of us don’t even use scrobblers. I personally don’t even have any streaming subscription. Just make multiple tiers and give scrobblers to 60/yr users, but leave 30/yr with more basic features
After that post regardless the damage is done, I mean slight inflation if my $30 went to say $35/$40 it’s a pain but at least I wouldn’t mind holding that additional cost, Trakt isn’t a streaming service and would compare it more to Last.fm but even their Pro subscription is quite expensive for what it is (Whilst owned by Paramount hence I assume the choices of that).
The worst thing is that Trakt just worked it didn’t need over complicating, Trakt Lite is a good example of wasted customer funded costs, is there any metrics that shows its even popular with users.
Exactly. Tried to use it on desktop and on phone - unusable. No one asked - money wasted just to brag, that something is being done instead of fixing bugs
Yep. It’s dumb for a website. But if it was able to convert into an Android app then it would be more useful.
I use normal website version on mobile as a web app ant it works just fine. Much better than Android native app or useless lite
The only reason I became VIP was to have nice stats. All the other features I don’t really care about.
So maybe you can say that the stats were worth $12/y to me. The rest was just to support you guys. $60/y just for nice year in review stats will not gonna happen. 7 year VIP says goodbye
Lite was definitely a waste of time and resources. I’m not a fan of how it looks. I took a look at it and immediately turned it off and went back to the normal Trakt layout on the web.
I agree on the sentiments expressed here that the scrobbling, app integration, and other more “costly” features should be a tier separate from the more basic VIP features. I’m personally a manual tracker and have no use for the scrobbling feature. If I recall correctly, one of Justin’s posts stated that Trakt pays per VIP user for this Younify or whatever they use for the scrobbling / automatic tracking. Frankly, they are wasting their money on users like me who don’t want or use it. What they really needed to do is make more surveys and polls to really gauge what features users really want (or don’t want), and what percentage of repliers feel this way (i.e. A poll asking users “Would you be willing to pay an additional $xx/yr for automatic tracking?”)
In my opinion, I think the tiers should be more like (however, there should be localized pricing):
- “Free” - The current free tier. However, I think the limit on the watchlist and collection should be expanded, maybe to 500 or 1000 each. It’s not as much for the lists as a paid tier, and the other lists would still be limited. I think spoiler-free browsing should be in free.
- “Plus”/“Pro” - Everything from the free tier, but with unlimited number of lists/notes. Users can view their year/month in reviews and all time stats. I think this tier should also have the advanced filtering, advanced list progress, improved rewatching, CSV exports (for manual backups), header image, and a “Plus”/“Pro” badge. This one has manual tracking. Maybe the old price of $30/yr.
- “VIP” - This should have everything from the previous tiers. This should have the automatic tracking, plex auto scrobbling, automatic backups, custom notifications, widgets, iCal/RSS feeds, and early access to app updates, plus a “VIP” badge. I think they should also let these members choose which poster they want to display (a suggestion I’ve seen floating around in the forum). This is the tier where they can implement their “new TV apps, better mobile apps, media center integrations and more partnerships.” This is their new price of $60/yr.
- “Tip” - A one time or monthly fee a user chooses to give to Trakt (user sets the price and frequency) just because they want to support the application. The user gets no perks, but a little badge. This is literally just out of the goodness of their hearts because they believe in Trakt.
Something like Trakt, which is so community driven, should have more input and consideration from the community. I think it might be a bit too late now for that. Oh well.
This response, or rather non-response, is a shameful mockery, so many words to say nothing…was it generated with ChatGPT?
Frankly, it is beginning to be annoying to be made fun of by those you have supported and paid for for years.
So @marius the official response is to attempt to gaslight the VIPs by redefining what grandfathering means?
“Grandfathering is a transition practice that allows users to adjust to new pricing plans” - no it isn’t.
The only thing I got from the annoucement was: Justin was one of the sane guys while the other “Executive directors” are getting greedy. They don’t understand how users are actually using their platform and that many users are not using all the VIP features so paying for all of them does have a bad value proposition. All the announcement does is affirm that the decision to cancel was 100% right. Hope the leaving VIPs make a noticable dent in their revenue.
We appreciate more transparency from @marius:
- What is their role in (the) Trakt (board)?
- Who are the people that voted about these changes?
- The people that built up Trakt over the years?
- The people that (recently?) purchased Trakt?
- The bankers that are preparing an IPO/sale?
