I’ve been a VIP member for 3 years. $30/y seemed like a reasonable price to support the team, but I only use Trakt for the web calendar on my PC and to sync watch history in the SeriesGuide app on my Android devices. Doubling the price isn’t worth the support any longer. I’ll be canceling before my next renewal in January. I’ll stick with free as long as it continues to sync with SeiriesGuide.
Been a VIP for 11 years paying $15/year. I could have accepted an increase to $30 but $60 is a joke. To make things worse, I’ve just checked and my plan has already changed to $30/year without me accepting the insulting “12 month special offer” price.
I understand that Trakt has grown since I first joined, server costs will have increased along with extra staff and other costs but screwing over long-term users who supported the platform and helped it grow is a terrible way of running a community platform.
All this is after we were told grandfathered users didn’t need to worry about price increases. None of the new features justify a 100% increase, nevermind a 300% increase for those of us who’ve been around long enough.
From the feedback here and on Reddit, it’s clear that for the vast majority of VIP users who actively post, there’s going to be a 100% decrease as the free version or alternatives provide the features that people generally use.
Even if there’s a backtrack, I’m not sure I trust that this won’t happen again in the future or more features will be locked behind an extra VIP tier
Yea but Justin has been reading… many times… Because I checked his profile lol :x
We are checking out Yamtrack right now and it looks great so far. No Trakt shenanigans for us anymore!
I am like most others, been a VIP since Nov 2012. Don’t use many of the VIP features, but love thevsite so continued to support. 100% increase for a year, then ultimately a 400% increase is a kick in the nuts. Especially considering @justin promising the grandfathered VIPs would stay as such. Very disappointing, I will be joining the plethora of users cancelling. Thanks gor the ride.
Also longtime VIP member. After I received my notice on the new pricing. I cancelled my renewal as well. Unbelievable they doubled the price!
I agree. My account doesn’t renew until January next year but I’ve already cancelled the renewal and probably will remove hooks from other services later today. This service was great for finding a few new shows that I would like and it’s nice to note everything I’ve watched in a single database but it is not a critical component of my content consumption and not worth the price at $60 a year.
Ok but if saying the 400 or whatever people here is small, what if it’s a case others haven’t seen the email or didn’t get the notification.
Unless I’m mistaken, they’d have to opt in to a price increase right? The PayPal subscription was for a set amount, if that increases surely they’d have to opt in and it can’t be done on the sly. So eventually they’re gonna notice if they just haven’t now.
Same January expiration, but I cancelled it today wanted to wait until the communicate something, 13y VIP is still 13y after all, they updated the Cancellation message about current pricing and the VIP cost was $60 already, and they still didn’t communicate anything, so I guess they want to keep going through with this. I’ll still use it as free as long as API is free, but I backed up to Yamtrack and Simkl both, because I don’t trust Trakt anymore that they don’t just paywall the API next year.
Bringing up the update post to everyone’s attention here
An important thing to note is Justin voted against this change.
I want some more details though. Did @justin know about this vote when he assured this wouldn’t happen recently?
Wow! Someone that has more power than @justin in Trakt. This is a surprise shift of power.
Looks like this is a change that feels like Twitter/X. If it is indeed true that Justin was against this move then I apologize for speaking ill will towards him in making the decision to price hike.
Much of the development effort and change decision I still believe have been dumb moves that caused Trakt to do this crazy price hike.
Biggest feedback is freaking add tiers to the subscription…..
I also want to know more about this. Probably we will never get the answer we want.
I knew justin was just a pathetic figurehead. I refuse to feel sorry for him. In fact it makes me angrier due to the fact HE was the one promising grandfathered prices would be honoured, that Watchlist for free users would be higher, and yet he has NO control over anything! Stop letting him say anything if his words are powerless.
As for the rest. Infrastructure doubling in a year? Maybe your investors (us) should have had a say in that, a chance to air our opinions BEFORE implementing anything. As for value proposition, that hasn’t changed for a very long time for the majority of us, so why should the price? You all have inflated egos if you think we are getting value for our money.
We were PROMISED honouring of grandfathered prices (no matter who said it), therefore uphold that promise. Otherwise all you are is an unreliable, lying company that cannot now, or in the future, be trusted.
Just a reminder of the price promise…
“as long as you remain active” means forever not for a few months!!
Hopefully 99% of the vip users that literally BUILT and made this service for what it is today will leave to competitors and trakt will cease to exist. These greedy corporate decisions is what’s ruining good companies.
Your expenses increased? Maybe you shouldn’t have pushed tonns of unnecessary and useless features. After we all leave, your expenses will dramatically go down anyway.
Good luck.
@marius Who even are you and why haven’t you commented a single time about the price changes?
Like hang on wait a minute Justin has said that he has 10 full time and 2 part time employees but the Trakt about page only lists 9 people.
No. Grandfathering is a practice to recognize long term loyal users. Unfortunately Trakt has lost all credibility and will never be believed in the future. Justin’s reassurance that our grandfathered pricing IN WRITING was worthless. Most of thir users can afford the increases but we do nat appeciate being lied to. Vocal complainers are not the ones you worry about. The ones that just do not renew without saying anything are the ones that will hurt you the most because there are more of them. I believe that Trakt is in for a huge surprise in the coming months when renewals plunge.
Yeah that line and whole post is completely MBA brained. Trakt no longer cares and is ran by suits. Free users should expect ads by the end of the year.
Some?
Soon as opposed to, you know, now. To justify the price increase. Justin at least attempted that when he first announced the price change for new VIPs.
Like why should we believe this. Are these new and better apps really something that users are asking for? Or are they just things that someone decided tat we would like.
And yet your most loyal community members are the ones that you slap in the face.
We PAID you for the services that we did not ask for or use. In your next endeavor you would do well to remember that your customers are the ones that pay you. Ask if upgrades are something that they are interested in and would pay for. I use very few of the VIP features. I continurd my VIP membership to help sustain the platform, not that it matters.
So, you decided that you’d rather get no money at all instead of some? I mean, you pissed a lot of people off who then proceeded to cancel their subscriptions entirely. The entire post reads exactly like typical MBA bull, but in the real world some money is better than no money.
This bit shows just how incompetent you are: you first announce a massive price hike for everyone and only after everyone’s already pissed off, you scramble in panic to try and promise that people will get something in return for their money. It reads like you were completely unprepared and the backlash came totally out-of-the-blue for you, when anyone with even a tiny bit of common sense could’ve told you that’d happen.
Also, did you notice that you are contradicting yourself? First you said that the price increase is because it’s so much more expensive to run the service, but…now you’re promising to spend even more money on new features and partnerships? The latter is mutually exclusive with the former, the price increase can’t be because running the service is so much more expensive now if you then go and spend the increase in revenue on new stuff and partnerships.
