Adding A "Not Interested" Feature: A Review and Proposal

My proposal is adding an eleventh rating choice labeled “Not For Me” or “Not Interested” or similar.

:black_medium_small_square:Request May '21 MissTyne

As a Trakt user, because she knows there are movies and shows she will never watch, MissTyne wants to mark shows and movies as “not interested” so she can get them out of view when searching to make it easier to find something she wants to watch.

Suggested Solution Besenwiesler

Create a “not interested” list for movies and shows, then use the search filter “Hide” - “Listed” to hide the “not interested” movies and shows from search results.

Admin Kate responded:

I think @Besenwiesler’s list solution is probably your best bet.

In the big picture, if users might click a “not interested at all” or a “hide everywhere” button:

  • The unhide feature would be lengthy and hard to manage - think about the current “Hidden Items” section and how it’s already a bit lengthy and hard to manage
  • Users would wonder why they weren’t able to find something that they’d forgotten they’d hidden
  • Search results would be inaccurate/incomplete
  • User support would get many tickets and it’d be hard to support

If you can think of ways to easily overcome some of these issues, I’m interested in reading.

As a Trakt user, Geert wants to hide movies or tv shows from the trending, popular, or recommended lists, so they will not keep seeing shows in which they are “not interested.”

Director justin Justin Nemeth responded:

We don’t have a way to hide like that since it would be a large performance hit and essentially break the caching on any of those shared pages.

However, you can use advanced filtering, which should help out a lot. For example, you could hide all superhero films or hide shows older then a certain year. Will that work for you?

:black_medium_small_square:Request Apr 12 Thatguy008

As a Trakt user, Thatguy008 wants the show and movie recommendations to stay fresh and not show items already or on lists, so they can find new shows and movies to watch.

Director justin Justin Nemeth responded:

It shouldn’t be recommending things you’ve already seen.

Please post a few screenshots and some example items that are recommended and already watched.

As a Trakt user, Michael wants to mark show and movie recommendations as “not interested,” so they get recommendations for shows and movies in which they are interested.

Director justin Justin Nemeth responded:

Click the Ø icon to hide any recommendations.

:black_medium_small_square:My Proposal

Trakt users show demand for a way to mark shows and movies as “not interested,” and other sites have the option or similar. Adding a “not interested” feature causes concern from the Admins about website performance and user confusion, leading to support chaos.

My suggested solution is adding an eleventh rating choice labeled “Not For Me” or “Not Interested” or similar. The rating options now are one through ten; adding the eleventh option, I hope, would not add much of a hit to website performance or cause user confusion.

Adding another rating option in this may also help any algorithms make personalized show and movie recommendations for the user. This eleventh option would effectively be option “0” and could be excluded from any rating calculations.

Please consider adding a “not interested” feature to your Backlog and pursing it during your next spring. I appreciate the time and look forward to any discussion.

Thanks for taking the time to compile all this! We are considering a “dropped” feature for TV shows, but this request seems different.

I think the concept makes sense, but not sure adding it to the ratings is a clear way of indicating you’re not interested. The performance hit is related to filtering out items in the movies, tv, calendar, and search sections. It’s not really how we store the data, but rather how we build an “ignore list” to filter out those items.

A workaround for now could be creating a personal list for items you’re not interested in, then Hide Listed will hide those. It would hide items on any of your lists though, which might be too aggressive.

I think it would be helpful if we could add a list specific exclude filter in the TV/movies sections. Then we can take our Not Interested list and exclude just it, but still display all other movies/shows that might be on a watchlist, as well as new items that haven’t been added to any list yet. I do think hiding all Listed items is too aggressive for some uses. I use hiding Listed to see what’s new, and that helps me update my Not Interested list, but doesn’t help much when I’m trying to figure out what I do want to watch.

Other sites work the “not interested” into their rating systems. I am not sure how it works on the back end, though.

I want to go to the movie listings and not have to wade through a sea of kid’s movies to find a new film I am interested in. Adding them all to a personal “not interested” list is cumbersome to clean up the search results.

Filtering by genre does not help because kid’s movies are often in multiple genres like comedy, adventure, or drama.

I am sure it is not easy putting everything together. Respect.
