Feedback on UI/UX and Missing Features

While the new UI is visually impressive and much more accessible for casual users, the overall user experience feels premature. There are several UX hurdles and accessibility issues regarding core functions that need to be addressed.

General UX & Functional Issues

  • Rating Management: It is currently impossible to remove a rating once it has been given.
  • Season Ratings: There is no option to provide a rating for individual seasons.
  • History & Logging: * The history for individual movies is inaccessible.
    • The history log lacks detail; it is counterintuitive to allow users to input specific dates and times if that information isn’t displayed afterward.
    • The history feed is missing a “daily grouping” view, making it look cluttered and confusing.
  • Play Counts: The “number of plays” counter is missing. This was a vital tool to identify accidental double-entries or to track rewatches.
  • Filter Consistency: Filters are unreliable and function poorly on lists other than the Watchlist.
  • The “Favorite” Icon: Using a heart icon for “Favorites” is confusing. On platforms like Letterboxd, a heart means “Liked,” whereas a star usually represents a rating. Since stars are used for ratings here, the heart creates ambiguity for long-time users of other tracking apps.

Navigation & Layout (Season View)

  • Episode Browsing: The current method for viewing episodes within a season is frustrating. Clicking on a season should open a dedicated page with a vertical list for better scrolling, rather than the current horizontal layout.

Platform-Specific Issues (App vs. Web/PWA)

Web App & PWA Consistency

  • Parity: There are noticeable discrepancies between the native app and the PWA (Progressive Web App), leading to an inconsistent experience.

Mobile App Limitations

  • Filtering & Grouping: The app is missing the ability to group/filter by content type (e.g., “Movies only,” “Episodes only,” or “Movies & Series”).
  • Localization: The app currently lacks support for localized movie and show titles.
  • Notifications: Push notifications are not working/missing.
  • Calendar: The app lacks a dedicated, scrollable calendar view.
  • Customization: The “Custom Navigation Bar” feature (choosing bottom buttons) from the previous version is missing.
  • UI Controls: The app lacks the intuitive button customization that made the older version so efficient to use.

Have you found any other problems?

Thanks @Tom_Frontman for summarizing the issues. I think there are a few more. But right now I’m frustrated about all the changes, which are downgrades for me. It’s like old wine in new bottles, but stretched with water aaand you have to pay a higher price. I’m feeling somehow ripped off. I’ll come back later when I calmed down.

For now I’m happy after having downloaded the old v2 android app and knowing how I get to the old design on the website to (from otherpost here in the forum).

Can you share the link?

On the UI changes: I personally like the old design much better. It looked more intuitive and not so bloated. I mainly used the “Check In” function and it feels now hidden in a random menu.

It’s now harder to jump directly to the next episode in the season

I’d like to second you on these issues, as they impact some of the core features that I enjoyed using with the previous interface and made me choose to support Trakt. The changes to functionality on filtering, history, and TV in general are severely limiting, and the new layout is especially bad for Trakt on desktop.

The other things I’d add are:

  1. Individual episode ratings are missing as well
  2. The organization of TV pages has extras before seasons and current episode, which are much more relevant
  3. The information density is much much lower than it was before, especially for TV. While the customization options you mention for specific fields would be nice, even having a “compressed” view toggle would make things much better

Also, for the commenter above me, I’m still able to access the old version by starting at trakt. tv/ dashboard (without the spaces).

How do you “check in” in the new app? I can’t seem to find that random menu anywhere…

They’re not, you just have to mark an episode as watched first to be able to rate it.

I don’t have an android device but i can try to help. if you long press on the check mark of an episode or movie on the home screen you should see it there. Or if you’re on the episode/movie page you can try the the dots to the right of the check mark

Check-In (Now Watching) specifically for Android V3 is not there yet but it is on the up next list. You can track it here if you wish to: Check In · Issue #4 · trakt/trakt-android · GitHub

Android App Feedback & Feature Requests

Overall, I really love the Trakt app and use it heavily — it’s one of my favorite tools for tracking movies and shows. That said, I’ve noticed a few things in the Android version that I think could really improve the experience:

Missing Filters (Please Bring All Filters Back)

Filters in general feel limited right now. For example:

  • I’d like the option to hide Collected items from my Watchlist.

  • Please also bring back the filter to hide Watched or Unwatched movies directly in lists, like we had in previous versions.

Library Episode Listing

In the Library, episodes are being added one by one, which makes lists very long and cluttered. Grouping by show instead of individual episodes would make browsing much cleaner.

Actor Pages & Watched Status

Thank you for separating Acting movies from Self — I asked for this a long time and really appreciate that change.

Now it would be great to bring back the watched percentage for a particular actor, so we can easily see how many of their movies we’ve already seen.

Kodi Playback Status

When I play a movie in Kodi, I used to see what I was currently watching along with the progress bar in Trakt. Now that seems to be missing or broken.

Despite these issues, I still really love the app and appreciate all the work that goes into it — just hoping these can be looked at in future updates :raising_hands:

Why is the watchlist no longer on the home page? It seems like it’s replaced with “Start Watching” which is just a worse version of the watchlist

Thanks! Is there a way for me to use the V2 app in the meantime?

You can technically download an older APK from the web

The android app redesign is terrible. Missing episode arrows to click to the next item in ther series for both tv and movies. I also cannot see suporting or guest actors in a tv show.
