Freemium Experience: More Features for All with Usage Limits

So this does not affect the Android app which uses Firebase Analytics for some reason by default, which is illegal in the European Union and especially Germany.

Such access to end devices for the purposes of (web) analysis, market research and any form of advertising without informed consent is prohibited under Section 25 (1) TDDDG.

Taken from a German privacy blog and it’s article how Mozilla tried the same with Thunderbird, but ultimately disabled it to comply with the laws.

If anyone wants open source apps (that also work fine without trakt or VIP) I can suggest SeriesGuide or Showly which both are also available on GitHub.

I request that you remove the cap on the watch list. I am a free user with over 400 items on her watch list. I should have been notified beforehand that these changes were coming. Instead, I had to find out the hard way, when I was unable to add a new show to my watch list. I am now stuck without an ability to add new shows. The new limit makes your website practically useless to me.

What’s the use of cool stuff if people flee because you take away the essentials/basics?

This was probably the worst of the worst.

@justin , would it have been that difficult to send out a blanket email to everyone letting them know that these changes were coming in or even had come in. eg Effective from xx:xx GMT, or efffective immediately limits will be reduced? You managed this with an email when your were “thinking” about reducing the limits. A lot of users probably thought that something was broken rather than intentional. Not everyone has got all day to keep up to date with every single change in the forums. As this was such a MASSIVE change, I think you should have communicated it to customers directly via email, either before or even shortly after the event. Actions speak louder than words, and this shows what you really think of your non-VIP user base.

Trakt.tv is social media. Nothing more. No more than what last.fm is for music and goodreads.com is for books… I don’t use your website directly. I don’t use your apps. I have found better ways to use your api to get my requested data to me in the way i desire.

Your product is the collective data of users using your api globally on what they are watching and wanting to watch…

Your customers should not be your users. We are the ingredients in the cake mix…

Trakt.tv is only good when as many people use it as much as possible…

Please reconsider your business model… You deal in information and how users use and interact with that information…

I’ve been holding back for a long time, but I think I’ll say something about it now.
I don’t understand the reason for the reduction of lists to 100 items for free users.
On the one hand, the limit is exceeded by a minority of just 2.9% for lists, 5.8% (watch lists) and 5.8% with more than 2 lists. On the other hand, they write that they want to guarantee the performance and stability of the platform.
Please. As if the lists would bring the performance of the servers to their knees. In addition, lists are hardly ever loaded multiple times and repeatedly.
If it were perhaps 40-50% of users who have more items per list, I would perhaps still understand it, but 2.9%.
At the same time, the user is supposed to pay an exorbitant $60 dollars for so many VIP features that probably not even 60-70% of VIP users even use or utilize, let alone know to this extent.
In addition, from my point of view, important features such as localization and language of episode titles/descriptions still do not want to be implemented, although the search already knows the interface to TMDB and is available. Furthermore, other apps that can connect to Trakt also have this language functionality.

I think they want to force the user to VIP which will never work with $60. I only switched to VIP back then because of more than 10 lists and swallowed the $30. I am a proud and satisfied VIP user, who in the meantime also uses features such as mail notification for restarts with my service, but it wouldn’t be worth $60 to me either.

With the restriction and if you read the topic here, there is only 1 problem that bothers most people and that is the 100 items per list. Not even the number of 2 lists is a problem.
Increase the limit to 500 items per list and the regular users won’t run away. A limited VIP with fewer features wouldn’t be a bad idea either, to earn an extra dollar or two if you want to do without banner advertising.

Especially if you have more than 10 permanent employees maintaining and developing the service and server, which costs money. That’s why I don’t understand why they are now developing a Trakt Lite version which is superfluous in my opinion and costs huge sums of money and time. Focus more on the important things at Trakt in the website and apps. You’d really think all the money was going into the development of Trakt Lite, because surprisingly it all came up at almost the same time.

I hope there will ever be a localization and language of episode title/description in the current Trakt for us VIP users and Trakt will not be replaced by the currently unusable economy version of Trakt Lite.
I don’t need a Trakt to find out about new releases and popular series/movies, which is also the focus of Trakt Lite.

Having a 100 item limit on the watchlist makes this site useless for most free users.

Over the last few months when I started using it actively, been trying to get friends to quit tv time and letterboxd to move to trakt.

This move just ends any argument I had to convince anyone to move here, and makes me want to leave. Guess I’m the one going back to those…

add a dropped function already, never paying for this site until there is one

and yes the watchlist limit makes no sense. it doesn`t cost anything for a text file to be longer. the other issue is limiting such a basic feature makes the site seem desperate, and it will be hard to draw in new users if they see something like that because it usually bodes poorly for the site existing in the future.

I literally use this site to keep track of TV shows and film releases and my own rather extensive collection of Blu-rays and DVDs. You’ve just killed that for me, and unless it’s changed I no longer have a reason to use this site.

Another confused user here from a few hours ago wondering if the system had broken:

https://www.reddit.com/r/trakt/comments/1i9jhg7/app_error/

Why did Trakt just not COMMUNICATE these changes to users?

I expect there will still be a lot of confused people over the days/weeks to come that think Trakt functionality is broken rather than severely curtailed by the owner.

Just imported everything to SIMKL. It doesn’t seem as good but it’s better than what you’ve done to this site.

It’s a shame, I used this site for a very long time and always loved but in one simple move you’ve destroyed it for me.

I’ve been using SIMKL for the last month, and have already accrued enough days for PRO status. I just can’t get used to it though, and most things don’t work as well as on Trakt.

So unfortunately, I may have to eventually capitulate and pay the $60, but not yet, because I completely resent what Trakt have done, or more specifically, the way they have gone about it.

But I mustn’t delay too long to join, because the price will be increased to $120 one day and the free users reduced to one list with 5 items in it.

I may be saying this last paragraph in jest, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there are more uncommunicated changes to come for us free users, well, those users that are left when the dust settles. :frowning:

EDIT: The first year $30 promo code seems to work again, so I’ll give it 12 months and then re-evaluate based on my experience and what is going on then.

I was wondering why my watchlist its not updating anymore…wish you good luck with your platform, for me its time to search for alternatives…

Been trying to get used to SIMKL for the last hour and I just can’t, the UI is terrible. Guess I’ll just keep searching for alternatives.

It sucks. I get it, but I wonder if all/most/some of the non-VIP (free) users who have been benefiting by Trakt for years had supported the app by paying $30/yr then, would this change have been necessary? I looked at it as an amortized cost. I used the system free for 5 years and started paying last year. If I pay $60 for 5 years, it averages out to $30 per year and well worth it to me.

Seems like it is time to look for alternative cause I was using this site to track what I’ve watched and now with these limits, I can’t do that anymore so what’s the point even. Hopefully that decision would be looked over with how many are complaining but I have a feeling it won’t

Me thinks you’re being purposefully condescending and not reading peoples actual complaints.

Never used the forum but had to post and say wow, what a stupid move and it seems the owner is just cash obsessed. Already moved to Simkl as I had 400+ items on my Watchlist, the crazy thing is I was about to buy VIP this week to support but not anymore eh just can’t support this trash move
