Awesome to hear! So how about a sale, 20$ recurring for VIP? You’ll convert a lot of the people that simply want to move elsewhere. More revenue, pleased users. Everyone wins. Or a half-way plan that gives lists a higher limit and it’s not above 20$.

Today i found a new series and i wanted to add to my watchlist but nope “you have more then 100 shows”. Wait what?
I just now saw the release notes and update…i have 105 items in my watchlist (things that will come in the feature) and now cant add anything new.
I cant add anything to my “already watched series/movies” (300+ movies and 139+ series)
So i cant keep “track” of series and movies i want to watch AND already watched but instead need to pay 60 euros just for that, because i dont need any of the other features.
i would have been ok with something like 20-30 euros for a “lite” sub to support the servers (but why limit the numbers, if only ~3-6% even use more items on the lists…?! )
I even would have been ok with unlimited watchlist and limited other lists.
But as it is, this side isnt usable for me anymore and i cant and wont pay 60 euros just to make it usable.
I really loved trakt (the design and usability) and i would have paid some reasonable price for a “lite account” but sadly i now have to look for another provider of such service or go back to do my excel list.

We recently integrated Trakt into our Android app, as we thought it would bring real added value to our users. It is completely reasonable to offer paid features for those who want them. However, the service has become almost unusable for free users overnight, which makes us feel like we’re simply advertising Trakt in our app without providing any real value to these users.
For this reason, we are likely going to remove Trakt. Limiting a collection to 100 items is simply ridiculous in today’s world.
If this limit remains in place, we will consider an alternative or develop our own solution.

Yeah I mean seriously, you have your customer base here telling you they would be paying customers if you met them in the middle with your business model.
I was a VIP for I think 5 years when VIP was still $20. I left because I honestly didn’t use a single one of the VIP features. I was supporting the site because i appreciated it and wanted to support what you were doing but times got tough and like I said there was nothing in the VIP level for me so I canceled. But to come back now because I’ve heard of this drama and discover that the price of VIP has tripled is a lot to take in.
There are a lot of developers who were caught entirely off guard by your decision. While I understand it is your business and service and there is no free lunch these developers added value to your platform that enticed more users. More users more potential for revenue if you are willing to meet in the middle and not cut a large part of your userbase off at the knees with no warning or forethought. Not everyone reads the forums.

I don’t think I have ever received an email from Trakt–certainly not one telling me that I would be limited to 100 items/list. Oh well.

remarkable, i feel so special, being in all three of those percentages! i have my main watchlist, which is 229 items, and nine other lists containing a total of another 454 items.
a couple of months ago, my main beef with trakt was that after giving the thumbs up on a TON of review comments for something, my ability to do so got locked — for “a few days”. it being so nonspecific was frustrating, and stupid. but not as stupid as this garbage.
i’ll be exporting my data with one of the provided third-party tools and then deleting my account, because the site is now unusable for me if i can’t add anything where it needs to be. bye, morons.

What’s important to mention here is that it seems it was only pertaining to the lists but not to the watchlist, so even if they actually contacted all of that 2.9% (which they probably didn’t?), that would still not cover all of the affected user base.

I have been a user of trakt since October 23, 2018. The watchlist limit will effect me but I can understand that more (even though I do think it’s absurd to limit it to just 100) however the collection limit is the DUMBEST decision ever that could lead to the site dying because people will just look for alternatives (As much as I would love to continue using Trakt I have to find an alternative to keep track of my collection)

Usually when a company doubles (doubles!) their prices, they also announce several major new initiatives that will significantly improve things for every user. Trakt has announced no such major initiatives, is not dramatically improving its offering nor providing any real explanation matching the scale of changes.
Doubling your price is extremely rare. Think about every service you use, when have they ever raised the price 100% overnight? If they ever come close to such a thing, they almost always offer a new higher tier instead.
Honestly the response by Justin leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. So the company revenue is fine? The only purpose of these changes is something nebulous about “lasting another 15 years”? Does that truly explain doubling the price and removing features? Even if $60 was the goal, it should have been a more gradual change, coupled with significant features each time.

So then you agree that these changes were pushed in order to better monetized the platform so that you are therefore able to do new feature and such correct? The feature that a lot of people use daily will now be greatly reduce for the cost of making the platform better. If this is it, why not better prepare user regarding these changes. Add a banner to the app and website in regards to what these changes entitle or how these changes affect users. I know you mentioned that this is not affecting a lot of users, but if you take the things you can do on Trakt as a whole some of the biggest feature were affected.
In fact talking about affected users:
Now this is where Im getting very intrigue: ‘‘who used Trakt in the last 3 months’’ so does this database differentiate users who simply scrobble via a thirdparty for instance without using the website at all or this includes all and everyone? What amount of user created an account thinking they would use the website, but never did and now they just scrobble because it’s connected via an API and are now still considered active? How are these users consider as active as user who actually use the app everyday? In fact why not run a test on how many logged-in users interacted with the website or app and how much of these users have a collection over 100, watchlist over 100 or simply more than 2 list. Because realistically, the user who simply use their API to scrobble via Kodi for instance without going on the website is definitely not the people getting hit by these changes and also not the people active on Trakt that are adding rating, creating comments on movie, interesting list for others and such. Maybe, if they use Trakt list from other people, but otherwise pretty sure I ver much press X for doubt.
Yes I can imagine the programmatic ads before, if you use them at the beginning, were deceptive because the content generated is associated with user data and since Trakt APi is realistically use on a lot of website, the users who navigate here have a broader ‘‘background’’. (trying to remain broad here) That being said I am pretty sure things would be different today since the website gain Trak-ion (get it) for it’s userbase and therefore probably a better reputation via SEO as well. Either way, still something that you could 100% ask users how they feel about.
Now im rambling and I really don’t mean to insult you Justin. I love Trakt and this is why I am so invested in this whole thing. But in my UX career ive seen quite a load of platform simply shooting themselves in the foot because they alienated their userbase and, I hope I’m wrong, but these changes feels like it. We need better options, there has got to be a better way and a more transparent one.

Hey there. I’ve been a user since June of 2016, and this is my first post. I’d been happy enough with the service that I didn’t feel the need to even join the forum.
Brass tacks: the only now-VIP feature I care about (unlimited collection items) isn’t worth $60/yr. I don’t use Plex, I don’t care about stats (haven’t even looked at 2024 year end), I’ve never created or specifically viewed a list, on and on. I literally only use the service so I easily see when new episodes of shows in my library have been released. It seems likely there are a fair number of Kodi people in the same situation (the list stats that were shared seem to align with that assumption).
If you’ve abandoned third-party advertising as a revenue source, I’m willing to support the site/service with a cost that is commensurate with the very limited feature set I use. I’ll echo others by saying you should strongly consider introducing a middle tier that only allows someone to have a large collection and has a cost that reflects the limited/simple feature set ($6-8/quarter, $20-30/year). Free, Core, and VIP.
The marginal cost to maintain this middle tier would be near zero since it’s just the lifting of limitations. Offer those who signed up for VIP since September a time-limited opportunity to downgrade and apply a pro-rated amount of credit to extend their resulting middle tier plan so you don’t have to go through the hassle of issuing cash refunds.
I won’t say I’m definitely going to leave if no adjustments are made, but I’ll be demoing other services. And because of how this was handled (it sure seems like the 100-item collection limit forces nearly all active users into VIP), if everything is equal or close, I’ll probably switch. I have a larger collection, but Kodi already has all the underlying data. And it’s very organized, so even if I have to scrobble/rebuild my library from scratch for some reason, it won’t take very long.

I request that you remove the cap on the watch list. I am a free user with over 400 items on her watch list. I should have been notified beforehand that these changes were coming. Instead, I had to find out the hard way, when I was unable to add a new show to my watch list. I am now stuck without an ability to add new shows. The new limit makes your website practically useless to me.

This was probably the worst of the worst.
@justin , would it have been that difficult to send out a blanket email to everyone letting them know that these changes were coming in or even had come in. eg Effective from xx:xx GMT, or efffective immediately limits will be reduced? You managed this with an email when your were “thinking” about reducing the limits. A lot of users probably thought that something was broken rather than intentional. Not everyone has got all day to keep up to date with every single change in the forums. As this was such a MASSIVE change, I think you should have communicated it to customers directly via email, either before or even shortly after the event. Actions speak louder than words, and this shows what you really think of your non-VIP user base.

Trakt.tv is social media. Nothing more. No more than what last.fm is for music and goodreads.com is for books… I don’t use your website directly. I don’t use your apps. I have found better ways to use your api to get my requested data to me in the way i desire.
Your product is the collective data of users using your api globally on what they are watching and wanting to watch…
Your customers should not be your users. We are the ingredients in the cake mix…
Trakt.tv is only good when as many people use it as much as possible…
Please reconsider your business model… You deal in information and how users use and interact with that information…

Having a 100 item limit on the watchlist makes this site useless for most free users.
Over the last few months when I started using it actively, been trying to get friends to quit tv time and letterboxd to move to trakt.
This move just ends any argument I had to convince anyone to move here, and makes me want to leave. Guess I’m the one going back to those…

add a dropped function already, never paying for this site until there is one
and yes the watchlist limit makes no sense. it doesn`t cost anything for a text file to be longer. the other issue is limiting such a basic feature makes the site seem desperate, and it will be hard to draw in new users if they see something like that because it usually bodes poorly for the site existing in the future.
