Freemium Experience: More Features for All with Usage Limits

I think the price change is a little too high (For new users, I’m a lucky
$30 plan VIP).
And maybe as it was said, an “intermediate”, not that expensive could have done the job ($9.99 a month to get unlimited lists or fat lists).

People have a "I can give you my a** if you product is free in exchange. People won’t pay a good product because, they already pay Netflix, Prime Video, Hbo +, etc etc.

I think maybe a “Give your a** plan” (Your data will be sold to the worst companies in this world) in exchange of fat lists could do the job, even if it’s dirty. If people agree to do that, let them do it maybe ?

How do you define an active member?

Who have you included in the sent out emails? What questions have you asked in those emails? I assume it was some kind of survey but I haven’t gotten one so I’m just guessing here.

Then act like it.

This was actually great because these “duplicates” were 99% unintentionally sent duplicates from 3rd party etc. The ones with exactly the same timestamp.

It was not another reduce of functionality at all. More like an issue fix.

Unless you meant something else.

I am disappointed with the limit changes to the free accounts. I was happy with my free experience and subscribed to the 30$ yearly plan solely to support Trakt because it was affordable to me.

Now if I had not done that I would have clearly changed websites because I will not pay 60$ yearly for Trakt and would have needed what is now a premium feature.

FWIW, mostly as a counterpoint to the dominant narrative here.
I’ve been a VIP user for many years. I use Trakt daily, but I don’t care about collections and lists at all. I also don’t subscribe to other users’ lists, so if previously free-tier users stop using Trakt, it doesn’t affect me personally.

Well, let’s just hope that Trakt can survive on the $30 subscriptions from current VIP’s, because if it can’t and it goes down the pan, it most certainly will affect you, me and everyone else here, VIP or free.

I don’t understand how the devs don’t realize that
useless free tier → fewer new free users → fewer new paid users

Simkl is stupid, if you want to turn on any of the privacy options, you gotta be a pro user. And thus the only way a free user can turn on privacy settings is to use the site for 20 days every month to get free pro.

I think people were grandfathered in to keep their previous limits back then.

That’s not the case now?

Lolwut is that even legal?

Sorry, my unclear language there. By “viewable” I meant that I can look at what is in my collection for reference etc. (“what was that film? oh, do I already have it” situations for example).

Oh I don’t doubt that in the stream vs collection, collection is a LOT lower. But only 3% download anything? That’s nuts to me.
There will be plenty of folk who collect physical media, but yes, hardly a blip on the Trakt community I’d guess.

And $25 a month forever with nothing to keep/ no guarantee of access (shows being removed etc.) will always be a wild concept to me.

What is considered as an active member? Do API users count? How much do you need to use Trakt to be considered as an active member?

I personally open Trakt page or any app maybe once a week or even less, but my watching habbits rely on Trakt daily. Am I considered as an active member?

That is what I meant. It had collateral impact on some of us who were using multiple plays at some time in the distant past to work around the continued lack of any way to mark things as played without a timestamp.

I, at least, never got advance notice that data would be removed from my profile. Those extra plays are gone. (Maybe I could manually recover them from a backup, since I’m VIP and have archives in Google Drive, but I have better things to do with my time than manually find and reenter hundreds and hundreds of missing plays, now with slightly different timestamps so the site won’t reject them as duplicates.)

End of the world? No. But it’s one more entry on a (thankfully slowly) growing list of times that Trakt failed to preserve the integrity of play history for users. (Another example: Knight Rider episode numbering for at least some seasons was updated to combine special episodes that were originally listed in two parts. I found out about that one when another user replied to an old comment telling me I’d reviewed the “wrong” episode. Plays at the end of the season were lost, as well as comments or ratings for the episode numbers deleted, and earlier comments/ratings/timestamps in each season no longer line up with the correct episodes.)

Nope. These limits apply to everyone (free tier). No grandfathered limits.

I don’t understand that argument. Currently free-tier users don’t bring in any money. So nothing will change when they stop using Trakt.

Exactly, and they are less likely to subscribe at $60. So no extra money for Trakt and they have to manage with the money they get already., and it may not be enough.

Personally, I would pay $30 today if the price dropped, as I’m sure some others would too. But at $60, it’s more likely free users would walk rather than stay and contribute (at $60).

This doesn’t affect me at all. I’ve been VIP 9 years and I’ll continue to support this awesome site going forward. My Mom has been VIP for years. My sister has been using Trakt for years but she wasn’t VIP. She became VIP in November 2024. She’s more than happy to pay $60. It’s worth it. We all use Trakt daily.

Okay, well you are the only one who thinks $60/y is worth it. The rest of us (including me) clearly see this as a rip off.

New people will join Trakt. This won’t be an issue for them because this will be just how it is. This is a short term issue. Trakt is looking at the long game.

I’m sure you would. However, people have had years to become VIP and they didn’t. I realize that statement doesn’t apply to newer users. However, I’ve seen many people complaining that I know have been using Trakt for years and they never became VIP. But they whined when the price changed and they said they’d have paid if it was $30.
