šŸ“š The Library on Trakt: What It Is and Where It’s Going

yeah, if you get rid of the collection feature, just remove than button because there’s a play now button

why??? when you can just, you know, mark them as watched? also inputting the date and time you watched them?

Yes, you’re right—I didn’t explain that very well. I apologize.

But it’s not the same.

Currently through automation, either the webhook or Plex Sync, newly acquired items in our digital libraries are automatically added to our Trakt Library. Are you saying that Plex Sync will now proceed to add them to our newly created List? If not, then one of the VIP benefits that’s listed as something being paid for is being taken away.

With all due respect, I understand Justin is OoO, but it’s been weeks since there’s been any official activity in that thread and it directly impacts this proposed change going forward so should be something you’re aware of too.

Can I ask why there’s such a push/focus on making the library playable? I understand the idea that it’s cool to be able to press play and watch any of your media instantly, but is that really how this is going to work?

Most users are likely using Trakt on a mobile device, but they’re not watching their movies and shows on that same device. So if I’m looking at my library on Trakt via my phone and press play… then what? I don’t want it playing on my phone, I want it on my TV. Unless you’re planning a TV application (which, considering the new UI, wouldn’t surprise me), I don’t quite understand what the point is in replacing the previous library feature with this new vision. I’m genuinely just curious.

To me, it feels like this will only be a good and useful feature for people who watch media on their computers, since they are likely using Trakt on that same computer too. Me having a movie directly playable through a Trakt button because I have it on Plex doesn’t really mean anything to me if I’m pressing that play button on my phone.

I’m confused. When I first read this announcement, I assumed that digital media stored on my server would still be included under ā€œLibraryā€. Only physical media that had not been ripped to my library would be excluded. But after reading responses from Kevin, even digital media will be excluded from the library, and will instead be relegated to a list. So unless I’ve misread the responses, only content available on streaming services I’m subscribed to will qualify for inclusion in the library. So does that mean my library will consist of all the media available on Netflix/Amazon/Hulu/etc.?

There are apple TV and android TV apps you can use to launch the media so thats the goal. Find what you want to watch on your trakt watchlist, click play, and it launches the media from where its playable. Obviously if you’re clicking play now while on a computer or phone then it may or may not be as useful but the play button is just to launch the items (unless it starts the Check-in/Watching feature at the same time). Normally I’m just clicking the Check-in for the content I’m watching when using my phone but I also dont use Plex or any digital media centers. I either bought the movies or tv shows on Apple or I’m streaming them through the all the various services

I get there can be some people still collecting physical media, but most of the people I know, don’t even own any hardware capable of playing a DVD disc. I can’t blame Trakt for leaning in into the digital-first user-base. Especially since the API/automation/scrobbling features are what’s making it stand out.

Honestly, having my home server instance show up in the available streaming services is something I’ve been waiting for and I’m very excited to give it a go. Whether I’ll use the feature depends entirely on if it will be limited to Plex (or other service selected by Trakt), or if other services will be able to add to the liblary via the api

As it’s a better place, will I be able to filter that list to show me only HDR10+ movies or DVDs that I own? Because currently, you can’t do that with lists but you can with the library. A better place should at least be able to filter my library metadata.

I’d have no issue if this list can do the same thing as the current library but I have yet to see any mention from the Trakt team that this will be the case.

Would it make sense to have both a Collection and Library? Collections being the thing that people can use to track what they have collected, whether digital or physical, and Library being the playable subset of the collection? I feel like that would satisfy both requirements that people have.

I am a fan of the idea of a library being playable from the site, and I can understand the technical reasons behind this change, but it feels like it would be entirely avoidable if Collection continued to remain a concept separate from a playable Library.

I think if Collection wasn’t renamed as Library a while back, there wouldn’t be an issue here and this wouldn’t be needed, as Library could be built as a new feature without disrupting existing Collections.

it sounds like that’s the plan, they just don’t want to have a layered library/collection. i just hope the non playable stuff still has the metadata available and editable, i still need to go through my library and add that info

As someone who switched to digital only with my library years ago, I see the benefits of this approach.

I actually could already access my digital library using the Trakt app on Google TV but this should make the access more direct.

As this hasnt been changed yet

If this is going to incorporate digital purchases (amazon/google/apple), please make sure it links to the correct country app/store to play the content

Nothing more annoying than clicking on a play now link and being taken to the wrong store and told not available (some of the play now links currently default to the US store instead of country specific)

@kcador, I currently have the digital content I own available through Infuse on my AppleTVs. This can currently be played through the Trakt tvOS app (launches Infuse). By your description, this fits with how you see Library content being used.

The thing is, there is no sync between Infuse and Trakt - I imported my digital media into Trakt’s library so that it knows what I have in my digital library.

I use this feature extensively. The only items in my library are digital content I have playable through Infuse. Will this capability by lost in February when the changes to Libraries are made. That would be a significant loss of functionality for me.

the changes arent going live in february, theres no ā€œgo liveā€ date for this change. The only thing in february is the tool he mentioned being released

OK, so there is no shift from using the Library to a special list(s) at that point? And I’ll still be able to add new digital content I’ve purchased to the Library?

That delays the need to know if tvOS Infuse integration with continue to work with the Library, but I’d still like to know that it will continue to work once the shift is made to the Library only being used for syncable digital content.

i would too since my library is all on apple. the way it was explained above seems like all my library would be moved

Bit of a trainwreck this topic, impossible to read all the posts. But I don’t need to play anything directly from Trakt. I don’t use Plex either. I use Jellyfin, LibreElec and Yatse. I use Trakt to keep track of my progress and what I possess. Nothing more. Cheers.

I would like that as a compromise. It just feels off to not have a dedicated space for collected media. A list is just not the same.

No, Plex Sync will add them to the Library because it’s automated and actionable.
For webhooks, third-party apps/integration, we’ll have to work at the API level. Media Centers already have a special role to access scrobbling, we’re thinking about doing the same for Library syncing.
Manually curated Library can be done with the new List.

Experience will be much improved on any device/apps that supports playback and integrates with Trakt. Some people watch on their phones, some on tablets, some on TVs, some on PCs. We care less about the device and more about it being playable.

We have Just Watch (and auto-scrobbling) for that. Please don’t catalogue everything you have access to on Streaming Services in your Trakt Library or in a List.

I’ve said above that this could be addressed with Lists and Notes acting as ā€œtagsā€ that could be used as filters. This is not the current state but this is something we can work toward.

In a sense, this is what we are doing. The Collection can be a List. The problem users are expressing here, and I agree, is that you lose the one-click button to add to Library (you need to click add to List and then chose the right List) and the filtering ability (which can be addressed with something like notes and tags).
Plus, we want to streamline the experience a bit so adding two concepts for Library and Collection alongside Lists would be confusing.

I’m also an Infuse user :waving_hand:
I’m in contact with the team at Infuse. I can’t promise you that it would be added in February (as I can’t speak for them) but this is something I will keep an eye on!
