My biggest problem with this price increase, is - that I feel - like being blackmailed. Honestly feel like a hostage in this situation.
I’m not too used to pay VIP whenever I came, just to support someone or have a little badge, or some new features. I don’t need it.
I was using Trakt for 10 years, and for most of the time, I wouldn’t need any of the features. Something felt nice - like Year in Review, but I don’t exactly need that type of sentiment.
The only feature that bring me to VIP was LIST LIMIT, particularly Watchlist limit. Still - because I am a cinephile, and I’m proud of it - I have now 10 000 items in Watchlist and currently using a second list for it.
But sorry - but given a Notion and other ,more difficult options" to keep track of movies/shows, I still couldn’t justify paying - just for this - 60$ per year. That feels too much. And as I see how they knew - that people like me - will pay them for these lists, they keep changing the limits (last couple of years), which is not a good approach.
There are no unique features that would justify that. No even - features, that would make life simplier - like increasing limits on Notes (from 500 to 1000 at least).
They could start increasing slowly. Give some reasons, and go around 5 to 10$ increase this year, with some other increase in next years as well. But going double just like that… is a no-go.
TRAKT was a great place in last 10 years for me. But I don’t have an option to just cancel my subscription and stay as ordinary user, because the limits are just - unusable for me.
This is definitely a sad time.
Not sure if this has already been suggested but would’ve preferred a tiered system instead of straight up doubling my price, I don’t use a lot of the newer VIP features & the price hike is too much to justify right now, luckily mine had just renewed before the announcement but this will be my last year as a VIP.
I would highly recommend paying the full Lifetime price at Simkl, if you’re considering VIP and your wallet permits it.
Being a software developer myself, I know how big the effort is to pay for servers capable to handle so many requests (which a website like this has to make constantly). The $150 really isn’t much, considering it’s a one-time payment (2 and a half years of Trakt subscription, in other words) and I’m sure it will help the guys speed up the launch of the new features (like custom lists or the v2 API).
Not affiliated to Simkl in any way, been with Trakt for years. Jumped out of the boat and bought Lifetime VIP at Simkl. Full price.
And the hits keep on coming. The new forum guidelines ban any mention of other services from now on
Someone is having a meltdown in the head office at the amount of folks leaving /canceling their VIP and this is the bizarre solution
Addressing a symptom rather than the cause has rarely been a successful strategy
Edit: Reddit trakt mods nuked my post about this on their sub, wonder how long this post will survive
That’s odd, I’m guessing these other services are just giddy at the increase in mentions of Trakt on their discords and forums.
let’s visit this thread in about a year to see how that site is holding up with all the new load and the things tha EVERYONE will be asking to implement cause they need a trakt clone. And see the prices at that point.
Hopefully, they’ll do well, as competition is healthy.Their two-tiered payment system is definitely a big plus for them.
Although I paid for Simkl lifetime VIP, I’m not sure about the way they treat users. Ability to count rewatches is one of the most (if not the most) requested features, and they have done nothing about it for 8 years. Same with rating episodes - they wrote that it takes database space which increases costs, and yet you can “rate” the episodes with emoji. I really don’t think there’s a difference between counting emojis or stars/numbers/whatever ratings (I may be mistaken here).
I’m not saying that Trakt is better than Simkl or vice versa. I’m just cautioning about Simkl as a savior of the movie and shows scrobbling apps. ![]()
For now, I have paid for both services, and I’m going to see what the future brings, since my Trakt subscription renews in December and is still at 30$ (probably just jinxed it ;)).
Oh, and to be clear - this whole mess with VIP pricing which personally feels like an insult for old VIP users, and also lack of desire to came with solutions like different price tiers for different needs is frustrating.
Anyone know of any alternative service for Trakt advanced filtering? I use it to track upcoming new movies and TV-shows (not new seasons, but entire new shows) while filtering out certain languages, countries of origin and genres.
I guess one needs VIP to have the ability to filter stuff. At least I’m not seeing any such options.
Hey everyone! We appreciate all the input so far. This thread has drifted quite a bit off-topic and has become primarily focused on competitors, so we’re going to go ahead and close it.
That said, we truly appreciate your feedback and have taken your concerns to heart. We hear you — especially when it comes to wanting more visibility into what’s next for Trakt. We’re excited to share that a new public roadmap should be released by the end of the week, with more to come.
Thanks again for your continued support and engagement!
