This. Did someone forget that grandfathered pricing isn’t just a feel-good thing, but also a form of soft lock-in that encourages people to continue subscribing, even when using a service less or not at all, in order to keep their old price for the future? ![]()
From 15$ to 60$, 13 year VIP member. Now looking at which VIP features are worth it for me, alternatives and so on. For 15$ or even 30$ I can see the value but 60$ is well beyond that.
LOL, yeah forget about that!! There ain’t no way I’m gonna bend over and take a 100% increase with no benefits at all.
I got that email and almost fell out of my seat laughing. Instant cancellation for me.

Oh well I just cancelled my renewal too. 7 years of paying VIP, 11 years of using the service, I was paying to support the website and getting the stats at the end of the year and that’s it.
I can’t justify paying $60 instead of 30. That’s just way too much an increase for no apparent reason.
Four year VIP here, I have never cancelled a subscription with such speed.
$60 USD is almost $100 AUD, absolutely no chance in the world do I find that to be a reasonable price to pay. Was happy to keep contributing at $30 annually to help cover costs, despite not being a heavy user but really liking the service.
Cancelling as well, been a member for many years but that doesn’t justify such an increase. This is a cool service but not a mandatory one.
Cancelled. Just not worth US60.
Ah, great, welcome to the awesomeness!! ![]()
I don’t see how free users are a cost to Trakt. The entire website is advertising and tracking data. That’s dystopian part! We were all paying for ads and tracking and they slapped us to pay more because we are just that stupid.
Also going to cancel, already created a reminder in my calendar. $60 for a simple tracker database? I mean I don’t use any VIP features anyways, just payed to support the project, I really liked so far. But I simply can’t support this huge increase. Will set up a self hosted solution instead.
Add me to the list of cancellations. I’ve happily supported Trakt for the past four years despite using very few of the VIP features, because I used it on a daily basis and like supporting sites I believe in. A few bucks more a year would’ve been reasonable, but doubling the cost is not only ridiculous, I’m having a hard time seeing it as even justifiable. What has changed with the site that much that requires charging people that have supported the site for years substantially more?
It’s an absurd price increase. You could’ve had me for many more years with the less “fair” (
) structure, but instead you’ve lost me.
You can already cancel renewal and keep using VIP until the end of the paid period. They are not worth you waiting.
Been here since 2018 and VIP for 5 years supporting the team, using the app and keeping up with what I have watched over the years.
To see the email land with a thanks now cough up 100% extra really hit hard.
Yes we have all had a good run and I think many here would of agreed a small increase would be more than justifiable but not 100% to $60.
So my cancellation goes in shortly and you opened my eyes too other sites be it arr self hosted or having had a quick look at simkl they seem to be on the right path and plenty of involvement both with the technical side and also about TV and films as well.
yup, also cancelled my sub. guess that money will go to rent
$60/year for a service to track movie viewings is probably the dumbest pricing I’ve seen! What were they thinking? Even if they drop it back down to $30/year, I think they already lost our trust.
Yup! I’m out too! 100% price increase? NOT the way to keep customers
Yeah, they could have at least tried to justify the increase by showing what this is being used to fund or even explain why it’s needed. It might’ve made the 100% jump a little easier of a pill to swallow. Instead it just comes across as hollow and unjustified, particularly the “fairness” line which just seems like a big thumb in the eye of all the people that have supported the service for years.
Cancelled, $30 sure. Double? No. I think they are getting ready to be acquired and or want to go bankrupt and close it down. Well see if this holds up in a year.
Just adding another long-time VIP voice to the chorus here.
I’ve supported Trakt for years not because I needed every VIP feature, but because I believed in the project and wanted to back something I used daily. But doubling the price to $60/year without any promised features, upgrades, or even a vague roadmap? That’s not a sustainable pricing model—that’s a blind ask for loyalty with no transparency.
I already run Tautulli with my Plex setup, so I’m not locked in. Trakt’s appeal used to be simplicity and community—but when neither are respected, there’s not much left to justify sticking around.
At the very least, this could have been rolled out with:
- A clear timeline for improvements
- Actual examples of upcoming features
- Consideration for legacy supporters
Instead, we got a marketing email and silence in the forums while users flee. That speaks volumes.
I’ve set a reminder to cancel before my renewal hits in 2026, but unless something changes dramatically, I won’t be back.
I assume they either got or are about to be acquired or sold. This sounds like what happens after a private equity firm buys a beloved product company.
