Closing discussions on announcements

appreciate the response, though i gotta say, the whole thread-locking situation still feels like a bit of a cop-out. constructive feedback got buried, and now we’re being asked to just “keep the vibes positive” while the core issues remain unaddressed? that’s frustrating. people are angry because they care about the platform, not because they want to stir the pot.

the changes that have been rolled out, especially with the VIP push and the limitations on free accounts, just aren’t sitting well with a lot of us. you say you’re listening to feedback, but it’s hard to believe when the same complaints are being dismissed without a real conversation. it’s not about political rants or personal attacks—it’s about a company that seems more focused on profit than the community that built it.

as for your question about what we love about trakt, the answer is simple: we love the platform, which is why these changes sting so much. the community, the features that made it useful, and the freedom it gave users—that’s what brought people here. but right now, it feels like all of that is being chipped away, piece by piece.

i get that you’re a small team and resources are limited, but this feels like more than just “growing pains.” the lack of communication and the dismissive attitude toward paying and free users alike isn’t exactly fostering the respect and inclusivity you’re aiming for.

just my two cents.

i also want to respond to this part directly. i understand that some people lack decorum, but honestly, locking it seems like the easy way out rather than addressing the core of the issue. why close it when a simple reminder to keep things civil could’ve sufficed? it feels like shutting down the conversation was more about silencing the growing dissent than maintaining any sort of community guideline. if a few individuals lost their cool, sure, remind them of the rules—but why punish everyone else for trying to have a genuine discussion?

the reality is, the thread was gaining traction, and more and more people were aligning with the concerns being raised. it’s not a small, isolated group; it’s a growing sentiment that’s being dismissed by cutting off the conversation. shutting down the thread didn’t stop the feedback—it just made it harder to continue the discussion where it started, and that feels like an attempt to suppress valid concerns. especially when, if you look at the volume of people joining in, it’s clear the narrative wasn’t just a few loud voices—it was a significant amount of users, both free and VIP, who felt strongly about the changes.

the lack of any real dialogue only worsens the situation. by halting the conversation, it sends a message that valid concerns are secondary to keeping things smooth for the platform. that’s not how you address issues, especially when they affect a good portion of people that contribute to both the services you scrub data from and the trakt community as a whole.

That could be an excuse for a delay of a few hours, but not for the (almost) total silence from Trakt in the closed topic,

There is one thing left that I still love about Trakt, but, to be honest, I’m too afraid to mention it, out of fear Trakt will put that (free feature) behind the paywall as well, in line with all the recent user-hostile actions.

I think Trakt should not be asking us what we love at this time, but start showing us (the paying customers and the free users) that the team still loves us. Showing by actions, not words.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the above points.

I agree that my closing topic statement lacked the necessary context regarding user behavior, which was the primary reason for closing the previous topic. We observed clear trends in your feedback, and I should have highlighted some of recurring pain points we’ve already started exploring, such as regional pricing and pre-gaming announcements, ensuring we do a better job communicating changes.

As a new user of this (forums) platform, I wasn’t fully aware of the expected usage patterns when closing a topic, and this chat made me realise that simply reminding users to remain civil might have been sufficient. I believe that there was an unusual # of flagging and reporting though (?)

My intention is to foster positive discussions and also identify useful features, but also promote things as advanced filters and recommendations, that users may not be aware of or haven’t discovered we’ve been hashing those out lately. Or the automatic tracking/ streaming scrobbler? Lots of you guys are into media centers, but we also have users who are more into streaming services subscriptions, for example. Watch Now? Is that something you want improved? Is Up Next something you enjoy? etc.
I’m also interested in understanding how you utilize these features and would like to propose a new post specifically focused on this. There is a high chance I have not identified in previous posts/conversations other user problems that this product can tackle and hasn’t yet.

What do you think? Because it feels like it’s probably a different focus and tone, and I don’t want people to feel that things get mixed.

Bear with me, and help me understand what’s the best way to achieve these things within this community.

P.S. It’s wekeend over here already! Responses might be a little delayed until start of next week.

I think you should start a new topic, instead of hijacking this one (because it feels a bit like another attempt to silence Trakt users, though without closing the topic this time).

sounds good, I’ll kick that off next week. Thanks!

So why not reopen the thread then?

yes, there was. realistically there needs to be a system in place to stop false reports and block people abusing said system and in cases when the reports are valid, they should have been removed/placed on a timeout.

for what its worth i agree with this sentiment, but brining up everything you said after should not happen in a discussion where people are venting their frustrations, wanting open discussion around the changes being made and watching most of the feedback go ignored in favor of cherry picked comments that they feel like responding to.

always opt for a new post if you want to talk about something else, keep things on topic. should things take a turn, at least give people a chance to course correct before shutting it down. on that note, would re-opening the original discussion be something that could be done?

be nice, before they close this one too /j

all as already been said in the closed thread.
just an example: Freemium Experience: More Features for All with Usage Limits - #532 by dg1974it

personally, as said in that thread, I use watchlist (counting 580 items) and Plex scrobbler, and auto-backup (but I’m disabling it). no other functions. no filters, no calendar, no notifications, no lists, no collections, nothing. just track my watched content manually (from my streaming services) and automatically (from Plex). 60€/year is simply insane.

Will you let me pay for “what I use” with in-app purchase? I’m in.
Will you keep prices increasing / paywall previously free functionalities? I’ll cancel my VIP subscription and stay as a free user and deal with the new limitations.
I can manage that, but simply put, Trakt will loose money with my membership.

Let’s see if they do anything with Feature requests.
I have just created a feuture request to expand the limit of the watchlist.

I would suggest that everybody who is not happy with the latest changes in how the watchlist is limited upvotes that request. That way we have a clear indication of how many forum users are not happy about the limit change.

While I appreciate you taking in the feedback I find it a bit ironic that both your posts end with invitations to go entirely off-topic (steering away from both the issue mentioned as well as the issues people had on the initial announcement)…

I contemplated about going into the things you mention but I think it’s just rehashing things already mentioned to staff.
You’ve been told how this change limits your free user base, what I would love to see is you brainstorming on how you can limit that impact. Pay walling stuff behind 60$ when it wasn’t worth 30$ to those users previously seems like an unhealthy direction (as you also got plenty of people after the initial praise hike who mentioned that it’s their last turn…). I mean, have you thought about lowering the price? Sales? I don’t want you guys to be just profitable but also sustainable…

I loved using it to track my literal collection of films and TV shows. Something I can no longer do because you guys decided to put arbitrary limits on it. I’m not paying £60 a year to keep a list of items on my shelves.

My favorite thing about Trakt is being able to add as many movies as I want to my watchlist, my collection and my personal lists!

Oh wait…

I love being able to have an organized watchlist of all the Movies and TV Shows I want to watch, and get a useful little calendar that will help me keep up to date with new releases of said movies and shows.

But that is useless now, as I’m well over double the new item limit, and I don’t care nearly enough about the app to pay $60 dollars just for it. Sucks to suck, I guess

Bring back collection, please. It’s a must have for Kodi.

Still nothing about the real issue that brought us here to begin with… The focus is now on the closed topic lol smh

Guess you need to go back and read the post directly being responded to as your answers are right there.

You didn’t directly respond to anyone so guess not.

If it’s the topic in general then my questions still stand.

They obviously replied to the comment before, which talked about the “small delightful things” we like about Trakt. It’s not that hard to understand.

Oh right I missed that she said that. Touche
