Hi,
Very frequently (multiple times a day) trakt will redirect me to homepage after I perform some account action (such as marking an episode watched) with a toast that I have already logged in. Then I have to hit back and reload the page (if I don’t, I get redirected again).
I’ve been having this for as long as I can remember.
I’m mostly using trakt site on mobilee and tablet, but I think same happens on desktop as well.
Is the issue on my end?
I have the same issue at times! When I want to mark something as watched.
Wouldn’t know what causes it… I usually try to close the tab and try again, or just use the app, since that always works!
This is usually caused by a browser plugin like an ad blocker. It somehow affects the Trakt website data that is stored in the browser to know you are signed in. Does it work in a private browser window? If so, that points to a browser plugin being the cause.
It is not consistent, more like happening after some time has passed or if I use a different device. I haven’t really recognized a pattern.
You can consistently reproduce it in chrome based browser if you go to progress, mark something watched and leave the tab open. Then mark something else watched 8h later in the same tab and chances are high you’ll get redirect.
Either way, I checked what is blocked.:
I would expect those not to cause this issue, but I’ve disabled blocker on trakt to see if it will be the cause.
I also used chrome before which does not support extensions on android, and I was running into this issue as well.
I am most suspicious of _traktsession cookie as I can see it changes when actions are taken. Does it store some expiration time?
Blocking those shouldn’t affect things, they are just got front end performance analytics. That is the main Trakt cookie that stores your login info, so it appears to not be updated correctly or is set to a shorter expiration. Does it work in a private browser window? That shouldn’t load most or all of the browser plugins and is a way to test that theory.
I tried disabling blocker for trakt, that didn’t help. I’m trying now in private window, will report tomorrow if the issue persists. Though, I don’t see why it should help, unless issue is with stale cookies/cache, since I don’t have any other extensions installed.
Chrome shows that trakt session cookie is set to “session” expiration and since I don’t close the browser it shouldn’t remove it. However, maybe it happens if android unloads browser from memory. On the other hand, I tried to delete and then I have to login again, which would suggest the cookie persists.
This could be the cause, if that cookie can become stale: javascript - Chrome doesn't delete session cookies - Stack Overflow
I got this every time in Android’s Chrome if I leave the site open.
For it to work I have to open the site, use it, then close (the “tab”).
@justin I figured out how to reproduce it. Chrome based browser, set it up so it continues where left of on browser start, go to a movie or episode and mark it watched or rate it or anything account specific. Then unload the browser (don’t close the trakt tab) from memory, for example by clearing all open apps. Start the browser again, notice that the item will not show rating, or won’t be marked as watched or in watchlist, etc. If you perform an action, you’ll get redirect.
It is not possible to reproduce it in private tab, because chrome based browser cannot restore private tabs on browser restart.
What I thought to be time based issue was just random time intervals until android decides to unload browser from memory.
Arg! When I see people doing this on their phones (it’s almost habitual for so many iPhone users) it drives me up the wall!
People got it in their heads that it works–and it did on old versions of iOS and Android years ago–but today’s phone OSes and hardware are so much more efficient with managing memory and processes that by manually closing every app all the time, you’re actually making your phone run WORSE. It’s having to reload and reallocate everything time after time instead of keeping the apps you actually use the most ready to go.
Ok, rant over. I hope you get it figured out!
@JeffSeattle these were just the steps to reproduce it immediately.
Happens to me (Firefox for Android with Privacy Badger* and Privacy Possum**) and my wife (Chrome for Android w/o add-ons) regularly as well—like Disordered, I suspect it happens when the OS unloads either the tab or the entire browser from memory. It’s not a major headache, but it would be nice if it could be fixed.
