IMDB and "open in browser" no longer working properly on Android app

As of version 2 1.9 of the Trakt app for Android (phone/tablet version), two things are no longer working properly:

  1. Tapping the IMDB rating badge tries to open Play Store or F-droid, and no longer brings up imdb.com in a browser.
  2. Tapping three-dots->Open in Browser (to work around the IMDB issue) inserts a URL parameter in the wrong location for TV episodes, e.g. https://trakt.tv/shows/family-matters?native_app_mode=true/seasons/6/episodes/7

As above for the IMDB icon but TMDB icon does nothing at all for me.

I hadn’t tried TMDB yet, but now can confirm. That badge does nothing when tapped.

Due to Google Play policy enforcements we had to limit the usage of external links from Android app to websites that consequentially allow users to purchase digital goods outside the app.

As a workaround (at least temporarily), when possible the deep link is now used to open a native app or lead to PlayStore (like IMDB) if there is no app available the link had to be disabled for now.

This one looks like a bug actually. I will take a look at this.

Well, that’s garbage. Not your fault it’s garbage, if Play policy forbids the old behavior, but I guess it’s time to go back to using the web version of Trakt like the good old days.

I’d say you guys should publish an APK we can sideload, but we all know what Google’s planning to do about those next year…

With the recent development (like yesterday) It might be possible to bring this behavior back when serving the app for certain countries (EU and now US). We’ll be exploring that carefully after Google shows more details on that.
