There’s a discussion about how the “original language” and “spoken language” fields in TMDB are used. Taking for granted the moderator’s view that “the Original Language field denotes where a movie is from and corresponds to the production countries”, whereas “the Spoken Languages field corresponds to the languages actually spoken in the original version of the film”, my question is: should Trakt show as a movie’s language the info shown in TMDB’s field “Spoken language” instead of “Original language”?
I sometimes choose a movie to watch based on the language spoken, since I don’t watch dubbed movies, so having the languages spoken in the movie shown in that “language” field would make more sense for me.
Happy to hear what other people think and if there are reasons to keep using “original language” as the language shown in Trakt!
I tend to agree with you, I’m from New Zealand, and our official language is English, however we have movies and television series which are in the native Maori language. It would be silly if those movies or series were catergorised as “English” just because they originated/filmed in a western English speaking country. So like you, I would prefer to see the actual language spoken in trakt.
I don’t think TMDB had spoken language when we first developed the data scraper. I will take a look at their API and I agree we should switch to using that if the date is available.
I’ll have an update out later this week that will display all spoken languages on the Trakt website. The official apps will get an update to support all spoken languages as well (for now it will just display the first one).
The TMDB original language field doesn’t seem useful at all, it seems like we’d always want to use the spoken language so that’s what I’m doing.
Do you have some sort of job that will go through and update everything? Even though it’s been a week, all my filters that specify a language are still completely worthless; they return practically no results.
