I mean, I get that incremental price increases over time are inevitable, but doubling it? That’s just bad business – especially if you lose more than half of your $30/yr subscribers doing it.
If there were some quality editorial content being added on top (like Letterboxd), or even just better social integrations, it would be much easier to swallow. But absolutely nothing new in exchange for the increase? Dang.

I think Trakt has seriously underestimated how many VIP users were subscribing simply to support the platform, not for the VIP features themselves.
Even if Trakt backpedals and offers to reinstate grandfathered rates or propose something more reasonable, the damage to user trust feels pretty irreparable at this point.
When the forums and Reddit lit up in September over the new paywalling of core features like lists, it was the VIP members who defended Trakt. Trakt made promises to those loyal users - and now, just months later, they’ve been stabbed in the back.
What stings most is that many of those same members actively suggested alternative pricing models - ones that would’ve increased their own payments - just to help Trakt stay sustainable. Those voices were completely ignored.
I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing how Trakt responds to this wildfire of entirely justified community backlash.

Maybe I didn’t get an email because I was always manually transferring my VIP money and only got a personal stripe link for the OG 15 euros last year. Wonder how that goes.
Actually took a break from most “social sites” for like a month and I just logged on the forums yesterday.
Sadly I have to agree with others. I could get behind most of recent changes, but I don’t think I use the VIP features besides adblocking and rewatching enough.
Cancelled after 5 years
I find it interesting that Trakt dont seem to have addressed a single concern or criticism so far, but the mods on the Subreddit are active and removing any criticism to try to condense it to one thread in an effort of damage control.
Just change your payment method. I used PayPal and removed Trak.tv from the automatic payments.
Trakt was there, just worked and I didn’t even think about. Now they have stuck their head up in a complete unacceptable way. Just cancelled my subscription as with many services like this, it became all about the money where before it was about the technology, the service and the fun.
Where does that come from? Do you have proof of this potential acquisition?
This 100%. 12 year VIP and I can afford the extra cost, but it’s about the principle. I don’t even use 95% of the VIP features and just subscribed to support the developers who I thought appreciated the userbase and community back. That was obviously not the case. This is just spitting in the faces of the loyal users. I bet 50%+ of VIP users weren’t even using the features and just supporting the devs, but they’re all going to cancel after being treated this way.
I have the offer for another year at $30 before the $60 increase, but I’m going to cancel completely as I don’t want to reward trakt with any of my $ and condone their actions. Goodbye.
I’ve been a VIP for 7 years, the last 2 of those years as an EP, so I’m obviously happy to pay $60/year to support the site that I get so much enjoyment from.
But I’m not going to continue that support when they choose to treat the users that helped them get to where they are with such contempt by going back on their word on the grandfathered pricing, even if it doesn’t directly affect me. That’s not how any decent company behaves.
My VIP just renewed for a year a couple of months ago but that will the last time for me and it’s time to look seriously at the alternatives.
Woof. Yeah I mean honestly I understand the need to raise prices every now and then, but doubling is wild. I went ahead and cancelled; I’m hoping enough others do the same that they roll this back.
I’ve been a 10 year member, cancelled. I only use this site to scrobble. I’ll just find another way of doing that. I only used to pay to support but it’s way too expensive.

Sustainability? That’s not a me-problem, that’s a you-problem.
Development? You’re basically saying that there may or may not be new features in the future, but you’re not actually promising any and even if you did implement new features they may not be relevant to my interests. Basically, you’re demanding more money from me on the basis that I might some day get something in return for it, but even that’s not guaranteed.
Simplicity? That’s again a you-problem. Like, literally, that is not my concern and it shouldn’t affect me. I don’t care and I certainly don’t want to pay more just so that things will be easier for you.
Fairness? Why should I care? If anything, it’s unfair to just suddenly jack up the pricing for me without giving me anything concrete in return for it.

What??? I’m just finding out about this now. Where did the communications people are getting come from? Came here and was confused saw all the posts about the price increase.

Uh maybe not doing massively unpopular moves leading to mass cancellations is a better way to ensure sustainability.

There’s no way you’re referring to customer confusion right? YOU CREATED THAT CONFUSION. You did not communicate about the price changes when it first happened. You admitted this!
So to fix a mistake that you admitted you made you just go ahead and increase the price for everyone? You really just couldn’t send an email???
And what do you mean streamline your billing system? Don’t you use Stripe, a well established billing system? Surely it can handle this just fine.

It is not fair to the people who supported you for years to increase prices.
Unbelievably disappointing. You really couldn’t even contact TVDB to get a quote on their API due to ethics but now you’re doing this.
Oh and there’s no way anyone will believe you weren’t thinking about this mere months ago when you were assuring everyone this wouldn’t happen.

Be careful the mods for the trakt community on reddit are power hungry and will ban you if you even speak bad about trakt any at all as it happened to me back when the free users was getting shafted.
