💬 New Trakt Feedback

Hi, you specifically asked

  • What is the one thing you are missing the most?

Well, it’s the progress page users/myusername/progress that is most essential to me.

Disabling v2 before v3 has one would render trakt.tv useless to me.

  • Which feature you really need in the New Trakt?

As I said, the progress page. I almost don’t use anything else.

It shows me the last 50 shows from which I watched an episode. (One click for 50 more shows.)

With one click on a show it displays a checkmark or an X for every episode on every season of a show.

It also shows how many episodes each season has. It expands the show inline on that page to show the seasons and the episode checks, which is perfect.

  • Why it matters to your experience?

It’s my history. My progress. On one page. Without scrolling. I can see what’s available for me to complete a season. It helps me to decide what to watch next.

Additionally, it shows me the date when the next episode to watch aired or will air. And it tells when I last watched an episode of that show.

There is more than 12 years record of me with 3500 episodes watched. I totally rely on this progress page.

  • How you would like to see it work or be improved?

Don’t “improve” things. You don’t know how users map their workflow to your features. Changing features breaks people’s workflows. It’s always a bad idea. Unless you’ve asked the users. So if you really ask: Drop v3. It’s beyond saving. Or at least keep v2 permanently and allow users to switch back.

  • Whether it is a big workflow blocker or a small detail you use daily, we want to hear it.

Well, disable v2 before there’s an identical progress page on v3, and I’m gone. And I really really really don’t want to be gone.

I was horrified when users/myusername suddenly defaulted to v3 with no switch back. Fortunately using the progress page users/myusername/progress as an entry point gave me v2 back. (An AI told me that! I had to use an AI to be able to continue using trakt.tv!) Please tell me the progress view is going to stay.

I’d even become VIP just to permanently keep v2. Maybe you should offer that. (I mean, seriously.)

Apologies if this has already been asked and answered here. I don’t have time right now to read every post in the thread.

Why does my Continue Watching show episodes that I marked as watched weeks/months ago on the classic site or in the iOS app? These episodes don’t show in that section for me on those versions. The shows in the red box in the attached screenshot are the ones I am referring to in my case.

2 posts were split to a new topic: iOS Beta 3.0 (927) issues

Super long time user and a web focused software engineering lead of 30 years here.

The new trakt app experience feels like a major downgrade in user experience. I fully understand and recognize the technical advancements under the hood and they were definitely needed.

However, the new layout is bleeding bad practices.

Horizontal Scrolling

Horizontal scrolling has been proven to be a problematic-at-best solution over and over by every research ever conducted on the subject since the early 2010s. While mimicking scrolling on touch devices is a nice convenience for design to not have to think up multiple layouts, it breaks usability and creates frustration for desktop users.

Information Density

The information density got larger by quite a bit. Just compare the old and new:

Cramming so many results into a single row forced you to drop the font size to barely readable.
The old design very clearly understood what to show “above the fold” for people wanting a quick recommendation of what to watch next.
The new design just feels like a UI exposing the database with no clear focus.
It screams: “Hey look, we have all this data, we don’t know what you might care about, so have it all”

Upcoming Schedules

The upcoming schedules section in the old world had so much more useful layout that gave you an actual overview.

Did it need fixing? Sure! But just exposing the same episode card without even showing the actual date and time of the episodes airing is a major step backward in usefulness.

Search page

This page was probably the weakest link of the old design

While the new layout visually looks better, it has most of the issues of the old AND introduces new ones. The old layout at least showed the title when you hovered over the card, but it’s completely hidden in the new. You’re expecting the user to parse the tiny artwork, which isn’t always easy. Not to mention that it’s an accessibility issue.
It also doesn’t give me any hints of which one of these results is the one I’m actually watching like the old one did.

Shows page

The old layout once again understands that people might be looking for different perspectives and gives the user the option to choose what they’re interested in with the left hand side navigation.
The image grid is enticing, it’s visual, you can tell what you’ve seen, what you’ve whishlisted, what you’ve marked, etc.

The only thing the old design was missing was a summary text overlayed on the image to figure out what that show is about or at least the genre.

In contrast to this, you have the “Here’s all the data I have, you figure it out” mentality of the new app:

Tiny images made even more confusing by greying out the ones that … I guess are on a list??
Have I watched them? Have I wishlisted them? Are they just followed?
The titles are once again offloaded to the images that once again result in accessibility issues.

Final thoughts

These are just a very few of the issues but they do show a theme of concerns.
I’m saying this because I’ve been rooting for Trakt since the very beginning:
Please stop being defensive about this and arguing with people who are trying to tell you that it’s not good. I’ve seen it under most of the posts of the same nature and it’s really not helping. I understand that you’ve worked on this a lot and it was crafted with the best of intentions. I’ve been there myself many times and it’s tough to get negative feedback. The sunken cost fallacy can be rough to get past.

The old layout had an identity and for the most part respected what users wanted out of Trakt. Did it need some love? Sure! But you really don’t need to fix what isn’t broken. This feels like when the recommendation engine got neutered. (I’m still salty about that).

On a personal note, you’re slowly taking away everything that enticed me to become a VIP and stick with it for 14 years going. If the classic view ever goes away in favor of the new one, I fear there won’t be much reason for me to stick around anymore.

Very good constructive feedback! I hope the team takes your points under consideration.

Ummm. I don’t know where to start. The website feels to ‘appy’ for me now. I feel like I should be looking at this on a tablet or phone and not a laptop/computer.

The progress page is too cluttered and has no filters. I liked that I could see what I watched on each day by default.

So many things a hiding behind multiple clicks now

Notes are gone. I use these to track quotes, something I want to remember (but not review) and any info I need to update about the show/episode/movie.

The progress page is gone. This was good in depth knowledge about shows watched, time watched/left, how many episodes.

Hidden shows/seasons are back into the watch list again. Also already watched items are in the ‘continue watching’ . I liked ‘Up Next’ ; ‘Continue watching’ sounds like Netflix and Trakt is not Netflix

The star ratings: Bring back out of 10. I use other sites that have 10 star system and they all matched. Now I have to figure out 5 star rating and 10 star ratings

Profile page is bland. I liked displaying current watch/favourite show at the top of the page.

The most watched genre, ratings, and most watched TV/Movie have also disappeared.

The summary section on profile page was handy for a brief over view

If lite is the new website it better improve, cause I liked all the in depth knowledge that the website providing and is why I never used lite.

At this rate, I will be sticking with classic version for as long as I can

Sorry, Trakt… but I am completely done. I logged in today to find that I can’t go back to the full site anymore. I can’t tell you how sick to death I am of websites and apps rolling out a new version that is completely and utterly lacking features, then saying “OoOpS, wHaT dO yOu WaNt BaCk?” We literally want everything back that we had before. I couldn’t care less how the thing looks, but when literal features and information is simply gone… that makes me want to leave. Like I said, I am so sick of websites and apps doing this to users that I just can’t fathom doing it yet again. It was fun while it lasted.

Edit: Okay, seems like the full site was just down or something because now it is connecting. I understand that you are still building out the new site and taking feedback. Everything I would say has already been said several times. However, when the day comes that the new site is all we have and it is as bad as it is now… what I wrote before this edit will still stand.

Some constructive feedback from my point of view.

I find the new layout very hard to quickly distinguish my shows. The old layout uses the posters, which in my brain are linked to the shows I know

e.g.

Contrast that to the new layout with screenshots and I have no way to correlate the images with the shows. I have to read the text, which is slower for me.

Additionally the progress bar in purple in the old layout is clean and clear as to show my progress. The new layout being dark, overalid on the screenshot, and full of text is less clear to me.

And the horizontal layout is poor, as I have to physically interact with the screen to show more information, I can see more shows on the old layout than the new.

Why can I not remove or re-order the sections either. I have less interest in the Start Watching sections than upcoming. I would like to hide or move it down

The quick media filter at the top should either float so that it’s visible when you scroll down, or move to the left with the other icons

image

The new app feels weirdly cluttered and empty at the same time. There’s a lot of information crammed around each show image. But loads of wasted space around each section.

Also why is there a mix of posters for Start Watching and screen grabs from the other sections. This looks inconsistent too.

At the moment the new experience feels like a downgrade and doesn’t incline me to use it.

I can’t find my lists. I’m only seeing 4 lists, when I probably have close to 100.
Where are the descriptions added to my list, where I keep track of how many episodes I’ve watched this year. My watch list seems to be empty for some reason.

When I open one of those 4 lists, it’s just empty. Meanwhile there’s supposed to be 3k+ episodes in the “episodes watched in 2025 list”

Why does my Upcoming schedule have shows that are supposed to be invisible (due to not being caught up yet)?!

How do I hide social activity? Which was already hidden before.

And what the hell is Library? And why does it seem like a random list of episodes I’ve watched years ago?

I’m so confused, I can’t find anything.

Lists are my sole reason for VIP, by the way. If those no longer work, I’m done.

Sidenote: the only thing I do like is the layout of adding a show to a list. HOWEVER, clicking the list button should NOT automatically add it to the watchlist. That’s just annoying.
Also, why do I seem unable to add an episode to a list?!

@mike.d Ok, so now we are in the general trakt feedback thread

Can you answer why the new Trakt lite and Trakt app changed the rating icon from hearts to stars?

The new site is useless on desktop. Too many features gone, too small, too hard to see (it looks like a mini-app on a tiny phone screen despite using a laptop), not enough visual information. This downgrade should be 100% optional for VIP members.
Filters for lists are broken, you don’t have a visual when a movie is streaming on one of your chosen platforms, icons to add a show or movie to a watch list is gone.

I pay money for all of the features to be easily visually available, easily usable, and easy to access, and to have a lot of information immediately easy to see. Increase the size of the icons, make them to movie/TV show posters and not episode stills, get rid of the horizontal scrolling. Make all of the icons that are available on V2 on the image (watch, add to list, etc) available. Basically stop trying to make it look like an app. Make the phone/tablet app look like an app. Let the website be a website. I don’t want an app, I don’t think anyone here who uses the website wants an app. I want visual information instantly available - what’s currently streaming, what’s available, what’s not, what’s in my lists, what isn’t, etc. All of that is basically gone without hunting, clicking, and searching. I want to see this information instantly.

I pay for Trakt because it is different and better and more useful than the other sites. Now it has become those other shit sites. The fact that no one was using the “new” interface while it was optional should have been an indication that we don’t want it.

If VIP users can stick with the original desktop site (V2) and you keep this new downgrade optional, then consider me satisfied and do all you want with that new site, I’ll keep paying for the old V2 site and stick with that. The new site is completely unusable on desktop. It looks like you are trying to cater to teens who live on phones - but guess who doesn’t pay for yearly subscriptions?

If we are going to be forced to use the new downgraded desktop site, then at the very least, we are going to need formatting options to remove section we don’t want (like “start watching” or “social activity”) and options to change the order of sections. And for god’s sake, larger images and the option to have multiple rows instead of everything horizontal. And fix the list filters - V2 lets you filter various options, all that is broken. I want to know instantly if something on my list is streaming on one of my platforms. Also, TMDB links and the “refresh” option seems to be missing. I have done thousands of edits on TMDB to keep Trakt updated, why remove that connection?

The reason you’re getting a lot of feedback now is because up until now we had the option of ignoring the new site and sticking with V2. I get it, you put a lot of work into it, and it’s a WIP. But forcing paying customers into your WIP is going to get a negative reaction. At least keep V2 as an option for the next year while you fix all the problems with the new downgrade.

So, in summary - for desktop:

  1. Make the images a lot bigger on desktop, and stick with TV/Movie posters and not episode stills. Why are you trying to make a desktop site look like a shitty phone app?
  2. Give us back all of the icons - watch/add to list/rate etc. Don’t remove options - I pay for all of these options, I don’t want to have to search for things endlessly. I can’t even find anywhere to rate anything anymore, or see my past ratings. TV show pages don’t show the last watched episode or next up anymore. You can’t go directly to “seasons” from the episode page anymore.
  3. Re-add the ability to see with a glance what is streaming on the sites I chose. I can’t even find where to add/remove sites that I have streaming access to. The movie pages now have barely any information - I can’t tell if a movie is streaming on any of my chosen sites. You have removed all visual cues from everything. Even the TMDB links and the refresh option is gone.
  4. Fix the lists - all filters are broken or missing. So broken in fact that an entire list of directors and actors that I was following is now empty. Why would you remove the ability to add directors and actors to a list? Fix that.
  5. Make it easy to access everything from the dashboard. Don’t force me to click and hunt this and that to find options. Make everything accessible from the front page. I want as much information and options as possible all available directly from the dashboard.
  6. Why can’t I see the date and time and number of times I’ve watched an episode or movie on that episode or movie page? Why is so much visual data being removed?
  7. If we are going to be stuck with V3, we need the option to hide sections we don’t want, and re-order sections.
  8. Stop with the horizontal scrolling. Why is the desktop being treated like a phone app? If I wanted a phone app, I’d use the phone app. Give the option to expand vertically.
  9. Just to reiterate - make as much information and options as possible accessible from the dashboard. Don’t hide it.
  10. Are you seriously telling me I can’t add a TV show or movie watch date from the past anymore? And I can’t remove viewings added by mistake? The main reason I use Trakt is to TRACK what I watch, and if I forget to click that I watched a show or movie when I watch it, I need to be able to go back and add it for the date and time I actually watched it. Why call a website “Trakt” if you can’t accurately TRACK what you watch? You also just recently added the “watched at unknown date” option which was great - bring that back as well. WTF guys.
  11. I know this is falling on deaf ears - but allow paying VIP members to keep V2, or at the very least, created a version of V3 that reflects all of the features of V2. We don’t want a phone app on a desktop site.
  12. I think a lot of people were with Trakt because it wasn’t a phone app looking lite featureless site like most of the others. So why are you now making it a phone app looking lite featureless site like the others? I don’t like and don’t want animated pop-ups and endless “scroll to load”. It’s a desktop site, not an app. Treat it like a desktop site.
  13. Again, I get it - I’m sure a lot of work went into V3 and will continue - so don’t be surprised if you get complaints from paying customers about an unfinished product. It is what it is. None of this is aimed at the developers - If you had kept the unfinished product optional until it was actually finished, I’m sure there would be far less of an issue. I was shocked to see a half-finished product forced on me today. I have paid for Trakt since 2018 and have never even considered ending my subscription, but today, things have changed.

did you really just delete the thread in general > discussions from like 10 hours ago about how we don’t like the new forced app.trakt.tv ?

What about wanting feedback.

https://forums.trakt.tv/t/wth-just-happened-to-the-web/88710/290

why are you forcing mobile users that WANT to use trakt.tv classic to use the app.trakt.tv simply because it’s a mobile device? If I wanted a mobile experience, I’d install the app. I don’t want a mobile experience and I despise horizontal scrolling, so I request the desktop website.. but now you take that away from your users..

Weird, because other private/unlisted threads I think you can see if you commented on it. At least unlisted.

Making a thread private is essentially the same as deleting it if you ask me.

For me, I’m still being redirected to app.trakt.tv on my iPhone web browser if I type in trakt.tv sadly.

But at least you can go to old trakt by appending it with /dashboard, but still.

They are also forcing desktop users to use the new version - not just mobile users, which is absolutely terrible for desktop.

As a member of trakt since 2014, I just want to point out how disappointed I am with the new upgrade both from a visual design and a functionality pov. I really hope you give users the option to stay on the old design which was pretty much perfect. Having said that:

  1. The “Progress” section was a great way to see all the TV shows I have completed and seen over the years with just their single Artwork. This is now completely gone and replaced by “History” with individual episodes
  2. The worst part of the entire visual overhaul is the “Screenshots” of the TV Show episodes. It’s mind-boggling complicated to understand from a visual stand point. The Continue section on the main page just shows screenshots instead of the artwork of the Show with a clear indication of which episode it is. I mean it’s clear main Show artwork vs random still frame of specific episode which one do you think will be visually more intuitive to a user. Imagine an older family member trying to use a feature and think what would be easier for them then pick that option.
  3. Too many other small features to list, keep the old trakt as an option. I don’t understand why companies change things that work well, it’s like a trend. Even the limited lists with VIP and now this, instead of saying you know what we’ll do what we do well and have a donation button, I’d gladly donate $100, just like I do to other free services like Wikipedia or Blender, but to tie people down with recurring payments and lock basic features that were free, then this re-design with stripping of features, no thanks.

I was just looking what has been worked on recently to see a mention about a list not showing content to unauthenticated users. there was a fix done… it now shows list content initially if you’re not signed in AND navigate to the direct link, but as soon as you click on a movie on the list it wants to force the sign up - even refusing you to navigate back with the return. clicking on a list from a user’s profile won’t even let you get there without a sign up loop. this is assine design  .

seeing this thread abandoned again by devs, months old API bugs unfixed, designers refusing accountability or discussions i’m about ready to look into alternatives now. it all points to the move trakt is doing once again is gather feedback, ignore it, and proceed to proceed regardless. wouldn’t be surprised to be randomly greeted with a different company name visiting one day.

I really don’t know why justin’s awesome work has to be done like that. why create app partner programs when you’re converting your own website into one? why appoint kevin in his position when he is actively shilling for a competing product and was was undermining trakt premium features before this (all those MOVIST app branded genre/keyword style lists clogging up the site and bypassing advanced filters)? something somewhere clearly went wrong.

I cannot figure out how to click on lists from people I followed, how to follow people again.

I dont not want a bs social feed of what others are watching and some stupid start watching feed that is blank forcing more dumb scrolling. This isnt twitter.

I hate having to scroll multiple rows to get the same information that I was getting on my default dashboard without scrolling, advanced settings allow for no options on how to customize the home dashboard and keep from seeing nonsense or stop unnecessary scrolling.

Im unable to sort my own lists at all, why do I need to go to 2 diff tabs to see lists and my favorites.

What i appreciated most about trakt and why I recommended to people’s was its ease of access. I found it easier to use than sites like Myanimelist and that seems to be gone out the window replaced with something that looks streamlined simply because its lacking in capabilities but is 2 steps back interim of seamless presentation and actual functionality.

I’m sure this feedback doesnt actually matter and you’ve traveled too far down a path that some Ai algorithm told you would be easier or take less manpower for production. Which I find sad because im not sure I used another site more than I used trakt, but in its current state I dont see that continuing.

I was noticing the thread about the redirection of the trakt.tv URL disappearing/being set to private as well. This definitely needs to be adressed by devs.

Why are you now pushing users THIS aggressively into using New Trakt, that we have to add “/dashboard” to even reach “Classic” anymore, when “New Trakt” is still this badly received and barebones in terms of features and operability?
