I’ve always just paid monthly…it’s now $6 a month which is perfectly doable and doesn’t break my bank at all. I use this site solely for the stats and want to be able to keep seeing my year in review and etc. Still, these price hikes are rather unreasonable and I wish it hadn’t gone up by this much.

I’m trying Simkl. Even paid for a year Pro to give it a real try. Have most lists now migrated over to it already. Not as intuitive, but I’m already getting the hand of it less than 24 hours later. Many apps are implementing it now, so users can have a choice (at the moment Trakt is so dominant in apps that it’s preventing even free users from migrating away).
Being on the fence is what Trakt is counting on - those that’ll pay despite all the reneging they’ve done with their promises and assurances over the last 6 months. Who’s to say in another few months they don’t go even further and bring in more expensive VIP, or a higher tier, and limit the current VIP to what free users used to get, for “sustainability reasons” (ie because they can)?

i heard if you visit their site like 20 days each month, you get their pro status. and you can supposedly repeat each month to maintain that pro status.

this post is right, unfortunately the price increase, though bad, was not the worst thing for me, it was the loss of trust. giving 1 weeks notice of a 100% or in some cases 400% increase in subscription cost is just not great behaviour

The problem is that Simkl is also $60/year for the premium tier (there’s a $30/year tier but you don’t get all the features)
But the question is do the user need or want all the features? That’s the benefit with tiers. User gets to choose what fits their needs rather than forcing everyone to pay a certain amt and not even touch 75% of the features.

I don’t need or want all the superfluous stuff you get with VIP (like access to Discord, badges, iCal sync), Pro is more than ample for me. It’s what I suggested Trakt do many months ago - general VIP and VIP+ for the likes of the scrobbling from Netflix, Disney, etc. That feature alone is costing an arm and a leg to implement, but it’s not something all VIP users want (me being one), so could be an added extra.

Yepppppp. It’s so stupid they force that feature to all VIP. This should have been an add-on if they didn’t want to do tiers. Like you said that is the one function that costs them an arm and a leg.
Pretty sure this was when things quickly turned downhill. The development and release of that feature.

Considering Trakt is now matching colours with Younify, I think one is getting ready to buy the other out so, yes, to me that’s when the decline started

That’s kind of how I’m feeling. Am I happy that it’s gone up to $60 or with the entire roll out of this information? Absolutely not. But my sub runs out in July, and after doing some preliminary searching, there is nothing else out there that has the UX and functionality that I’m looking for. I absolutely hate how cluttered SIMKL is, and I’m not really interested in getting used to it. I am concerned that this is really just the beginning of the end for Trakt, though.

The problem is, they are now in a death spiral. I agree with your points, but $60 a year is a lot to swallow for what it is, and anyone that isn’t a fan won’t pay for it. They also have no way to monetize the free users. So costs will continue to rise while revenue dries up.

It is a shame, I think I was a proud user for the years that I was VIP (4 according to the sob story they just gave me while I canceled), possibly converted a few tvtime, justwatch, and serialized buddies to jump over to this all in one app/service/site. But the price hike is way too high to justify for the three or so features I use. I don’t even want to be a free user here with their business choices recently. Moving to Simkl and back to Justwatch for my watchlist.

I know what Discord is, it’s just another live chat client similar to Slack (it’s not a message board system like this one). I more so meant…what does the comparison to Trakt? I haven’t seen Trakt on Discord unless they are private and only those with an invite can find it.
Yeah I don’t think a Trakt VIP discord exists. At least an official one the company maintains you get into by paying for a membership. The user must be mistaken or is thinking of an unofficial one.
trakt definitely doesn’t have a discord server, but simkl does if you pay for their vip membership. They were talking about simkl previously so its related to that post
