Slow Mode?

Topic is in slow mode so you can post again in A DAY? I can’t even EDIT my post? Are you guys serious? Afraid of the backlash of your recent questionable decisions? My god what is happening here?

I was just trying to figure out if everyone saw that or it was a variation on being silenced.

More censoring

that’s not censoring

From Wikipedia: Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication, or other information. This may be done on the basis that such material is considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or "inconvenient”.

Making it impossible for people to add their responses, or edit previous responses, meets this definition, even if there is a time limit. It excludes people from active participation in a discussion.

in your haste to prove me wrong it clearly says that the “material” is considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or inconvenient.
Here is the definition of Censor:

They are not removing posts (on that thread), they’re simply limiting the post time for each person to prevent spamming. That’s a common practice for forums and chat rooms. Any private company is allowed to censor whatever they want, most choose only to censor things that fall under those guidelines in the definition above.

Do I like that there’s a rate limit? No, but I can understand why

I’m not sure how what you say shows that this isn’t censorship. At a minimum, they are rate limiting people’s ability to comment - on a post where most are expressing displeasures - because it is “inconvenient” as the definition says.

In your haste to prove me wrong, you missed the rest of the OED definition. I would argue “damaging to morale” also applies here:

Regardless, I accept that a private institution can do whatever the hell they like. That doesn’t mean I can’t call them out for it. And this is a repeated pattern from Trakt.

that again says that its the material that is being censored, the writing that someone has posted, not that the act of censoring causes damage to morale or is inconvenient. those things can both be true as a result of censorship, but they are not censoring anything.

anyway, i don’t remember them doing a rate limit before. They may already be aware of the bug about the sorting and are attempting to stop people from spamming about it without reading the forum post. I recognize that the up next showing all watchlist items is not a bug as they have mentioned but the sorting not working is.

EDIT: You can call them out for things sure, but you cant call them out for censoring when they’re not. The only censoring I’ve seen is removing peoples posts that are politically charged, or offensive in nature, going as far as banning people for those posts. when it comes to that thread that was deleted, we don’t know if trakt deleted it or the OP deleted it (or if the thread was deleted as a result of the user deleting their discourse account or being banned)

I think you are misinterpreting me. the act of limiting people’s ability to express themself is an example of censorship.

It is proactive censorship, ie, in this case, it is censorship by limiting or removing the “material” before it has been published.

Also, when I mentioned morale and inconvenience, I was not applying these as consequences to Trakt users of censorship (although this too is true) but motivators for Trakt to enforce censorship - ie, it is inconvenient for Trakt staff to have to continuously monitor and respond to forum posts, and damaging to Trakt staff morale to have to read and respond to said posts.

That’s fair, I hadn’t considered it that way. And to the first point about being proactive censorship, I can see that as well.

my intention also wasnt to be that guy, but then i became that guy. “uhm ackshually”… but i appreciate that we both kept on the point and didnt attack each other so i honestly thank you for that.

I appreciate this response, thank you. It’s all too easy to make a debate get too heated these days and Trakt forums have been very emotive for the last few months so it’s refreshing to have a good discussion.

The funny thing is that at the bottom of the topic it reads this:

I’m not native to English but if I’d translate that to my mother tongue I’d say this is a curtesy question and not a rule. Since this is however enforced on us it should much rather read “You’re only allowed to post once in 24h within this topic”. That would clarify things… but as with everything on trakt for more than a year now their way of communicating with their paying (!) customers is beyond broken!
