Upcoming VIP Renewal Pricing Changes

11 years user, 4 as VIP

Paid mostly for the support, I don’t really use most of the features
Also paid for various 3rd party apps in the past. It’s really annoying to let it go, but this price/feature combo is not worth it.

I’ll try to keep trakt and simkl synced for a while and when my VIP renewal date arrive probably just move to the competition.

Is everything supposed to be like this ? Can’t ads and/or what seemed like pretty fair compensation be enough ?

Asked my boss for a 100% raise and she said no for some reason…

I agree it seems that way which is why I don’t get why they aren’t offering lifetime subscriptions. That’s what you do when you want a big influx of cash.

Been happily supporting this site as VIP for almost 14 years now without using most of the VIP features…but 60 USD? No thanks, that’s too much.

Or, you know, tiers. The thing people have been requesting since the price increase first happened.

My renewal is due in August. Instead of the $30 I was willing to pay, Trakt won’t be getting the $60 they planned to bill me, but $0.

My current thinking is I’ll spend a day having a look at simkl then get a year to support using a member referral and see how it goes.
A lifetime cost seems worth while but always a gamble no matter who you go with.

I’ve been a loyal VIP member now for 11 years. I’m not really using most VIP features but love the site and wanted to support the team. But $60 is a 4x increase and that’s simply not worth it for me. Would have been fine with $30, but the price you’re asking is simply too much.

Will cancel my membership.

I will also be canceling if they increase the price 100%. I do not get even remotely that much value out of Trakt. $5/month is straight up the cost of some streaming services.

Agreed. I also set my eyes on Letterboxd. I already have an account there and once imported my Trakt data. But I was too lazy to keep it updated.

A huge advantage of Letterboxed is that way more rl friends use it than any other comparable service. And in all its wisdom Trakt just gave their hardcore base some extra motivation to leave and join Letterboxd. A breathtakingly genius move. It almost feels like Justin watched the news and thought he also should do something like putting tariffs on his closest partners.

Yeah, user since 2017 and 7 years as a VIP, for one of the best trackers out there .. but to find this email this morning, with a 100% increase from 30 to 60, is a hurtful slap in the face. Genuinely.

I don’t really expect any reply in here from the team, at all .. I hate to say it, honestly, but I don’t think any of you care. Not one of the “reasons” for the increase is a user problem, it’s a platform problem and you’ve just thought, ahh well lets take the mickey, double the price, annoy every single VIP member, backtrack on previous promises and they’ll all pay. Well, clearly from the replies here (341 and counting), I can’t see one, not one, where someone is in support of it - everyone is cancelling, so if that is your ultimate goal, to close down, just be honest. You realise that with this decision, you are going to kill the product here right?

You have users who have supported the site and service for everyone else to use and to grow (as a primary reason) for years. I’d love to see the calculation used on this to say doubling the price is the right thing to do when you are causing people to cancel within hours of having the email - that’s some feat. I would have paid 40, from my 30 currently, but 60 .. is a lot.

What is worse, is that your previous announcement that ‘grandfather’ plans will remain, only months ago - now turns out to be a bare-faced utter lie (said at the time to probably placate the anger and bad feeling around free users having service cutbacks). This smarts the most to me.

There’s been a lot of changes and bad feeling on certain things that have happened in the past year, some were back-tracked on after seeing sense - others, like the reduction in service to free users, not. That riled a lot of customers, forcing free to become 30 VIPs, to then increase them to 60, in that time, again, not a good look.

If any VIP is happy having their price hiked from 30 to. 60, or even worse, 15 to 30 and then then to 60 the following year, are happy about it (for all the ‘features’ you ‘may’ get above the ones no-one uses) I’d love to see their reply.

But more importantly, the silence from Trakt Team here is .. deafening - and shows the utter, sheer contempt for it’s VIP user base. I’ve always been diplomatic, always supported and defended some of the previous decisions, but this one, is lost on me.

Today is a sad day, and feel that from reading all the previous comments.

it is double the price, yes we maybe no reason, i havent seen any new awesome features for like a long time. Only visual stuff and better UI. I’m a loyal fan of trakt for 12 years. I use it for scrobbling and with a different app, i will be lost without it, the idea of merging or starting in a new site and moving adding selecting the shows i follow is not worth my time.

And to be a bit in the devils advocate, 60$ is 5$ per month, i think many people are spending in Starbucks 10$+ every day for a fancy coffee with a lengthy name.

Having the price increased 100% is a no brainer to cancel for me. I liked the service, I was using the library for automation but man 60 usd per year is definitely not worth it for me. Thank for these years (It was a good 3 year, not 10 or 15 but still…), but this kind of a price change is a no-go for any service for me. Functionality wise Trakt is a statistic tracker for the users not a streaming, not giving any kind of value which worth the same price like every other streaming service.

Exactly my thoughts… They were promoting locked $30/yr for those who would subscribe fast, otherwise $60/yr. I saw a few posts saying they subscribed, and half a year later for them I think it’s an even bigger slap, than for long term VIPs :man_facepalming:

Not sure what’s happening inside, but for the last year they were introducing features no one asked for, while old features are still full of bugs. And this price increase is the last straw for me - I now see @justin and a whole team as straight out liars  Where did this locked price go (both for free users who upgraded recently and for long term VIPs)?

I’ve been a VIP for 7 years, and this has been one of my most used services.

Well, getting the email certainly wasn’t a fun way to begin the day.

I just cancelled my subscription. It runs out on December 1st, 2026, so I have plenty of time to look for an alternative.

Did you mean 2025? December 2026 is 1,5 years from now

No, I mean 2026. My renewal date is October 1st, 2025, but my VIP runs out in 2026.

OK, so I guess you’ve got a year for free at some point. Good for you

Of course I could afford the $5 per month. But why should I just accept them breaking their promises, that they kept insisting on just last September?

Even more so if alternative services reach parity or surpass the features Trakt offers. While Trakt reduces or cuts helpful features and offers pointless eye candy instead. Or has an app that still isn’t providing the same access and data as the traditional website.

And the cherry on the cake is that services like Letterboxd do the social stuff so so much better than Trakt. With more people in general, more activity and more of everyone’s RL friends to connect with.

And you exaggerate about the burden of a migration. I already once imported my data from Trakt to Letterboxd, it was a matter of less than 30 minutes.

So no, you aren’t the devil’s advocate. You are just wrong.
