Upcoming VIP Renewal Pricing Changes

I’m out if it increases to that nonsense price, almost 10 years here.

Musings then. Stupid of them to double the price.
Maybe they have to change that or they will lose a lot of subscribers.

nice site, very neat and seams to be a nice copy of what trakt do. But you do realize you pay the same price right for VIP (actually more)?

I do realise this, but I haven’t paid US $180 to them over 12 years to suddenly be told that I am going to be paying US $60 a year moving forward. I can purchase SIMKL’s lifetime service and be done with it.

It’s just a really poor experience for long term users, and it was communicated poorly. I’ve probably logged into Trakt 30 times in the last 12 years, but I liked the service and wanted to support a small development team. This is a cash grab, and I’ll take said cash elsewhere.

Here’s another question. If all of this is supposed to “start” on May 20th, why can’t we renew at the discounted price now?

I think plex does some, and I saw people talking about simkl. Would be interested in hearing others

bc there’s no option for it. and if you cancel to re-sub, you’ll auto be on $60/yr. when grandfathered in, you can only maintain your grandfathered pricing with auto renew. also, if you cancel now, you still get to use VIP until the expiration date.

My thoughts are the same. I understand being angry about the reneging but if the service ends up shutting down over a bunch of petty cancellations I think a lot of people will regret their own contribution to that once they realize the void that has been left. I use Trakt more than any other site and while I’m not happy about having to pay more, I can accept it as it’s still a valuable service to me and I wouldn’t want to see it go. Not to mention I can almost guarantee that many of the people complaining about how $5 a month is “just too much” are probably spending that or more daily on some dumb drink they’ll be done with in 10 minutes. Sorry but I have too much else going on in my life to give a shit if a site I use frequently and appreciate is raising its membership price—I’ve been a user since 2021 and a VIP since I think 2022, and use the site basically daily, and just cannot bring myself to feel “betrayed” by something so innocuous.

I have to say going all day without some sort of response was a choice. Hopefully they say something before the weekend.

Took up the offer of 30$ for a year (13 year VIP). Immediately followed by price increase to 60$. Seems that even that offer has been withdrawn. Was happy to pay 30$ BTW and reassess after a year.

Unlimited lists is the only VIP feature I want or use. Can there be a tier with just that? Maybe $5 a year?

I’m only here because Trakt lets me make lists on an episode level. $30 was already too much, but it let me do what I need. I’m not spending $5 a month to make my playlists. Sorry but I have too much else going on in my life to spend even more of my money on a single feature.

Clearly many of us do not see Trakt’s full set of features $5-a-month-useful, so the $5 daily drink argument is just as useful as telling people to stop eating avocado toast.

I paid 30$ to support trakt. 60 is too much. I am also out.

I’ve done an advanced search twice (which required VIP I believe) and the year in review… I think that’s the only VIP features I have used. I subscribed paying $30 a year just to support them, but not worth it to be shafted like this.

All the other features I use are the free features, which I can get elsewhere for free too.

I would have kept paying $30 to support them, but I can’t support the way they have gone about it.

Uh I don’t think any of these users who are “petty” canceling will be sticking around trakt and we’ve all decided to move on to sites that appreciate their users. There’s not much to regret if trakt shuts down since we’ll all be gone. Maybe you think a 100% price hike (and 300% for us OG VIPs) is “innocuous” after Justin just last September promised all of us grandfathered VIPs that we’d be taken care of while the rest of users were rioting over the free users getting screwed, but I think otherwise. To each their own. To me, I’d be happy to see trakt shut down after how they’ve been conducting themselves over the past year. Serves them right. There are consequences to actions (and lack of actions in this case with their ghosting after dropping the email bombshell).

When this happened for new users, I told you guys its a matter of time that it happens to most people, but nah, “just buy the VIP at $60 and stop being a freeloader”. Where are those people now who were so relentlessly throwing shade on new users for not buying VIP at $60?

I distinctly remember explaining that Trakt can’t get financially stable just from doubling prices for new users. How many new users would actually pay double the price that would make Trakt financially stable? It was just common sense that this was inevitable. Now deal with it.

Where are @CajunRob & @terryapodaca ? Cancelled your VIP yet? Or are you both still singing that high and mighty note? How do you like the grass on this side? Its sad how some people only understand when it happens to them and not a moment before.

I understand it’s frustrating but life goes on—will the few hundred commenters in this thread honestly still be thinking about this a week from now? I have spent enough time in online circles over the years to understand how hive mind mentality drives this kind of conversation on websites before petering out. It’s a cycle. Idk I just can’t be bothered to be vindictive over something that doesn’t affect me on a deep, personal level. I simply appreciate the site for what it provides and for that reason will continue to use it.

Everyone has their own circumstance.
Sure I use the site regularly, but most of the functionality I use is available on the free tier. I started paying for VIP over 10 years ago, mainly to support the site. I’ve left the sub going as I liked what the site was trying to do.
Over the last year the attidude has changed, initially with the changes to the free tier and now this change to the grandfathered plans - only months after being told that we’d continue on these plans as long as we still subscribe.
They’ve lost my trust, so because of that have lost my support.
I’ll continue to use the site on the free tier once my VIP expires next year, unless I find a better alternative with a platform that values its user base.

That email was a disappointment. I’ve been using Trakt for stats for years and upgraded to VIP a few years ago because I wanted to support and would have been happy to continue if they didn’t do this 100% charge increase. The only VIP features I really only use are seeing the stats (I like to check the year in review frequently) and make lists, and those features are not worth $60/year. I don’t have a Plex or use the Scrobbler, or any of those kind of things.

Since I just like the data, I might just end up making my own little tracker for the features I use since I’m a full-stack developer. When I make it (might take some time because work–and my VIP ends in December), I’ll be happy to share it, but I know a lot of users prefer some of the more advanced features. Good luck to those looking for alternatives!

Maybe it’s not a big deal or loss of trust to you, but as a 12 year VIP who has been there from the beginning and personally helped grow the site from meticulously updating TVDB info (then later TMDB), giving feedback to Justin and recommending the site to countless friends claiming it is a great community that cares about the users, it hits a lot harder. I don’t think this is something users will forget in a week and I see most are canceling their subs in response just like I did. I didn’t even use most of the VIP features and was just subscribing to support the Devs, but that is out the window with all their actions in the past year. I see exactly what my loyal support over all these years has meant to them.

If you are after something Plex branded, they have something called Plex Dash. It does however need a Plex Pass: Plex Labs | Plex

With that I do use/have it but recently reset my Plex server so then the data went with it, also if you delete your files I believe this doesn’t stay on the app.

If you are wanting to use a 3rd party alternative there’s something called Tautulli, not used this myself.

There were many other suggestions throughout this thread, the most common one I’ve seen was simkl which might be my go to after my VIP ends as you can track outside of Plex.

Letterboxd was also working on something I’ve seen people discuss, does anyone know much about this?
